An ontology-driven framework for enhancing reusability of distributed simulation modeling of industrial construction processes

This paper describes an ontology-driven framework for developing distributed simulation modeling of construction processes. The research described in the paper is motivated by the necessity of knowledge sharing between distributed simulation modeling collaborators, and reuse and portability challenges in construction simulation models. Our approach addresses these challenges through ontological modeling and linking of construction simulation modeling components including (i) ontology of construction process, (ii) ontology of simulation world view, and (iii) ontology of distributed simulation modeling application tool. Within the paper, ontology driven approach and mapping of ontologies for information transference between simulation components has been described. Another discussed application of ontologies is structuring of simulation modeling development through use of reusable elements. A large-scale distributed simulation model of industrial construction processes has been outlined to illustrate the application of the approach.

Industrial construction is a complex production system involving multiple supply chains. Engineers need a tool that enables them to plan and improve the system by testing different theories. This research developed a special modeling system tailored for building large-scale simulation models for industrial construction. The modeling system can be used to model an industrial construction project as a whole supply chain system, covering spool drafting, material supply, spool fabrication, module assembly, and site installation, complete with details of the production level. The entire production system can be conceived in terms of not only activities, but also product flows and information flows by the developed modeling system. The developed model was utilized to execute several simulation experimentations to test the various theories. This testing ultimately facilitates the improvement of the performance of the whole industrial construction project system.

:Chord dome structure is a new type of hybrid prestressed spatial steel structure system, which is often used in large-span structures. During the construction of the structure, it is necessary to apply prestress to the ring cable. Taking the chord dome roof of Hebei North University gymnasium as an example, the whole process of prestressed cable construction is simulated and analyzed by using the finite element software ANSYS. The hoop cable of the dome roof can slide freely in the hoop direction, and the attribute of free sliding in the ANSYS interface is "coupling". In this paper, two kinds of simulation models, coupling and uncoupling, are established to compare, and then to explore the influence of coupling on the construction process of string dome structure.

The author of this article represents his own work DVCompute Simulator, which is a collection of general-purpose programming libraries for discrete event simulation. The aim of the research was to create a set of simulators in the Rust language, efficient in terms of speed of execution, based on a unified approach and destined for different simulation modes. The simulators implement such modes as ordinary sequential simulation, nested simulation and distributed simulation. The article describes that nested simulation is related to Theory of Games, while distributed simulation can be used for running large-scale simulation models on supercomputers. It is shown how these different simulation modes can be implemented based on the single approach that combines many paradigms: the event-oriented paradigm, the process-oriented one, blocks similar to the GPSS language and even partially agent-based modeling. The author's approach is based on using the functional programming techniques, where the simulation model is defined as a composition of computations. The results of testing two modules are provided, where the modules support both the optimistic and conservative methods of distributed simulation.

The paper dedicates in commemoration of K.A. Bagrinovsky, known scientist, doctor of economic sciences, professor. His thesis was theoretic problems of mathematical modeling and operation of economy. His works in the operations research, the methods making decision, the simulation were received in scientific world. The analysis and the modeling of the mechanisms for scientific and technological development for the production systems of different level in economic hierarchic both centrally controlled economy and making mechanism were conduced by Bagrinovsky in CEMI RAS. The paper presents the investigations (2001–2015) of the analysis and the simulation of the different mechanisms of the innovational activity. It also discusses the methods of the development the complex of the simulation models. In a sense simulation modeling is the science and the art as the selection of the salient parameters for the construction model, intake simplification, the computer experiment and the making decision based on scarcity of accuracy models rest on the heuristic power of men: the practical trial, the intelligence and the intuition. K.A. Bagrinovsky introduced the considerable endowment in the development of this direction for economic and mathematical investigation.The principal object was to show that the relationship between the innovational policy and the technological structure, scientific research sector and the introducing of the progressive production and the organizational structure is obtainable by the models. The character of these relationships may be to use in control of the parameters for the modernization economic. The construction simulation models and the experimental computation analysis were presented the investigations the different mechanisms of the innovational development ant the variants of the estimation have been accomplished on the modeling level by the computer experiment.

Simulation modeling of phytophagans’ influence on the yield of seed fruit crops, in particular apple trees, was carried out. By means of simulation models the importance of phytophagans’ influence at different stages of the vegetation period and the period of fruit ripening was revealed. The software package Matlab was used to build simulation models. As a result, simulation models with nonlinear characteristics were obtained, which maximally reflected the studied processes. The developed models imitate the process of phytophagans’ development. Generation change of pests and all stages of their development are simulated. Their respective numbers are recorded at each stage for all generations. The development process at each stage is modeled by separate subsystems of the simulation model. To simulate the development of one generation of pests, these subsystems are connected by external links. In addition, part of the relationships provides a simulation of generational change. There are a number of input parameters that allow to configure the simulation of the process of changing generations, taking into account the peculiarities of the development of various phytophagans.

We reviewed the published knowledge on forest succession in the North American boreal biome for its applicability in modelling forest cover change over large extents. At broader scales, forest succession can be viewed as forest cover change over time. Quantitative case studies of forest succession in peer-reviewed literature are reliable sources of information about changes in forest canopy composition. We reviewed the following aspects of forest succession in literature: disturbances; pathways of post-disturbance forest cover change; timing of successional steps; probabilities of post-disturbance forest cover change, and effects of geographic location and ecological site conditions on forest cover change. The results from studies in the literature, which were mostly based on sample plot observations, appeared to be sufficient to describe boreal forest cover change as a generalized discrete-state transition process, with the discrete states denoted by tree species dominance. In this paper, we outline an approach for incorporating published knowledge on forest succession into stochastic simulation models of boreal forest cover change in a standardized manner. We found that the lack of details in the literature on long-term forest succession, particularly on the influence of pre-disturbance forest cover composition, may be limiting factors in parameterizing simulation models. We suggest that the simulation models based on published information can provide a good foundation as null models, which can be further calibrated as detailed quantitative information on forest cover change becomes available. In the construction process of large-scale civil engineering and architecture, how to realize rational scheduling is a key problem need to be solved. This paper studies the construction process of the large-scale Civil Engineering decoration companies, particularly the construction with parallel multiple sets of team and multi-project. To solve the problem, the paper designs a special scheduling algorithm and carries out simulation. The scheduling algorithm shorts the duration of construction and improves enterprise efficiency.
