One of the ways to build information models is ontological modeling. The use of ontologies greatly facilitates the exchange of data between embedded models and utilities for the digital representation of an object or a real-world system, sometimes called “digital twin” (DT). It is also important to establish a correspondence between the DT, people and external programs. Based on the dictionary of the main terms, classes, objects of the subject area and the relations between them, we have built an ontology of the hydroelectric dam DT.

The article deals with topical issues of ontological modeling of the knowledge base of the intelligent decision support system (DSS) for the choice of an individual educational trajectory. The purpose of the work is to develop an ontological model of the knowledge base of the decision support system for building an individual educational trajectory of a student. The subject of the research is the ontological modeling of the process of building an individual educational trajectory. The relevance of the work is due to the individualization of the educational process, which is proposed to be carried out according to individual educational trajectories (IOT). When building an IOT, a large role is assigned to the independent choice and decision-making of students, where it is necessary to clearly see the possible result of their choice. The system for constructing IOT selection scenarios or the Decision Support System (DSS, Decision Support System, DSS) is an intelligent system, the core of which will be a knowledge base based on an ontological model. Methodological and technological aspects of modeling the ontology of the knowledge base of the subject area of individual educational trajectories, the use of modern software tools and standards for the development of ontological models are presented. The method and technology of ontological modeling are described, the main technical standards and their theoretical foundations are presented, as well as the main processes of the design methodology. The article describes the subject area of the ontological model, an approach to building a knowledge base model of an individual educational trajectory, where the target questions of this ontology are formulated to determine its scale and competence. A sequential process of ontological modeling of knowledge of the described subject area is presented. The rules of logical inference for checking the competence of the ontological model are developed and the results of logical calculations are presented. The choice of semantic technologies for the development of DSS is presented. In conclusion, conclusions are made about the advantages of the ontological approach to the development of the knowledge base of the decision support system for choosing an individual educational trajectory and about the software architecture of the implementation of this system.

The article discusses an ontological approach to solving the problem of forming state policy of economic development of cultural and creative industries and the corresponding intellectual-information management systems. The purpose of this article is to develop an effective toolkit (based on ontologies) for making optimal decisions in the field of state regulation of the cultural and creative industries, taking into account the dynamic factors of the external environment. The ontological approach considered in the article assumes the presence of three levels of models: meta-ontology, models of subject areas of cultural and creative industries and models of making appropriate management decisions on the formation of economic development policy of cultural and creative industries. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the purposeful nature of ontological modeling of such complex system as the state policy of economic development of cultural and creative industries. The system under consideration has certain goals, tasks, resources, processes, factors of influence, risks and other characteristics. These characteristics include, in particular, the structure of the model, the ability to highlight the essential objects of real relations of the considered subject areas, the ability to represent knowledge for the joint work of specialists in computer modeling, the processing of expert knowledge and the generation of management decisions within the framework of the corresponding intellectual-information systems.

Standards and ontologies for manufacturing understand resources differently. Because of this heterogeneity, misunderstandings arise concerning the basic features that characterize them. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how to ontologically model resources with the goal of facilitating the development of knowledge representation models for manufacturing. By reviewing the literature, we discuss and compare three approaches for the representation of resources depending on whether they are conceived in connection to either processes, plans or goals. By addressing the advantages and shortcomings of each view, we present a unifying perspective to enable the modeling of resources in an integrated manner. In this way, the intended meanings of the used notions are harmonized and, as a result, one can facilitate multiple experts to interact e.g., via data sharing and/or data integration procedures. Differently, by keeping three separated views, there is no guarantee that data coming from different parties will share common meanings even if the same terms are used. By the end of the paper, we present a case study to show the application of our approach and to compare it with an existing ontology for manufacturing.

In his Categories, Aristotle details the kinds of being that exist, along with what can be understood and predicated of existing things. Most notably within this work, Aristotle advances a set of ten, top-level categories that can be used to classify all kinds of being. Even today, the influence of the Categories is felt in many domains, particularly in knowledge organization (KO). Here, Aristotle’s Categories bear deep, long-standing connections with works examining categorization, subject analysis, and theory of classification. Though its relation to ontology might seem obvious, connections to KO perspectives on knowledge organization systems (KOSs) and ontological modeling are curiously lacking. The aim of this work is to offer a re-examination of the Categories as a KOS, particularly through the lens of the KO field’s understandings of ontology. Utilizing Zeng’s classification of KOSs as a theoretical framework, this study draws parallels between the first two sections of the Categories and the defining features of ontologies and offers an initial ontological model of this work. The results of this re-examination stand to offer a new view of a fundamental work in the KO canon, draw further connections between past and present perspectives in KO, and further contribute to the theoretical grounding of contemporary KOS research and practice.

Persistence is about how things behave across time. It is generally discussed in terms of endurantism (three-dimensionalism) and perdurantism (four-dimensionalism). Despite the relevance of persistence to ontological modeling, however, there is no clear consensus over how to characterize precisely those two theories of persistence. This paper takes the initial steps towards a foundation for ontology of persistence. In particular, I examine by employing recent findings from philosophy of persistence how some major upper ontologies conceptualize endurantism and perdurantism. My resulting modest suggestion is that formal-ontological discussion on persistence should be updated by expanding its perspective beyond the topic of whether objects have proper temporal parts or not.

PurposeThis research presents an ontological model, to communicate the impact of dynamic preconditions for peri-urban communities. As such, this paper approaches perturbation communities as social-complex-adaptive-systems.Design/methodology/approachPrevious assessment of dynamic preconditions have typically been based on top-down approaches. Through the lens of social-complex-adaptive and systemic design approaches (requiring a range of different disciplines), this work focuses on providing a broader view towards periurban research. The methodological approach involved academic literature, fieldwork observations, in-depth discussions with community, government, experts and research groups, focusing on a region called “Xochimilco” on the outskirts of Mexico City, a unique pre-Hispanic, Aztec ecosystem. This evolving man made agricultural/ecological structure of island plots, still provides environmental services to Mexico City. This region provides the basis of the research and subsequent ontological model. Ontology, in this instance, refers to the nature of being within a range of constraining dynamic forces relating to resilient behaviors of the current Xochimilco perturbation ecosystem.FindingsXochimilco can be considered as a longitudinal phenomenon that contributed to the understanding of observable resilient and precondition elements between the past and present of a living complex-adaptive-system.Practical implicationsThe research has provided a better understanding of community resilience through preconditions, contributing towards preparation of environmental change and future urbanization. To this end, the research focused on visualizing key dynamics elements for communities attempting to absorb new urban conditions (being continuously pushed into it).Originality/valueThe outcomes of this research have provided specific systemic, bottom up approaches with ontological modeling to assist with visualizing and understanding intangible dynamic conditions that impact high complex areas of perturbation regions.
