The Effect of an Intercollegiate Soccer Game on Maximal Power Performance

The effect of a competitive soccer match on maximal power performance was assessed on 19 members of an NCAA Division III female soccer team. Performance testing occurred within 24 hours prior to the game (Pre), immediately postgame (IP), and 24 hours postgame (24P). Each subject performed a squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ). Comparisons between starters (n = 10) and nonstarters (n = 9) revealed no between-group differences in power performance at IP, but starters were found to have significantly lower power and force measures at 24P than nonstarters. There were significant correlations between playing time and peak force during the SJ at 24P (r = −0.47), and between playing time and peak power during the SJ at IP (r = −0.57) and 24P (r = −0.51), and during the CMJ at IP (r = −0.49). Comparisons between different positions revealed no differential fatigue patterns. Results of this study show that power performance appears to be maintained for the duration of a soccer match but declines significantly within 24 hours after the match. Position played does not appear to affect performance decrements seen at 24 hours postmatch. Key words: athletes, sport, exercise, female

Research quantifying the unique workload demands of starters and reserves in training and match settings throughout a season in collegiate soccer is limited. Purpose: The purpose of the current study is to compare accumulated workloads between starters and reserves in collegiate soccer. Methods: Twenty-two NCAA Division III female soccer athletes (height: 1.67 ± 0.05 m; body mass: 65.42 ± 6.33 kg; fat-free mass: 48.99 ± 3.81 kg; body fat %: 25.22 ± 4.78%) were equipped with wearable global positioning systems with on-board inertial sensors, which assessed a proprietary training load metric and distance covered for each practice and 22 matches throughout an entire season. Nine players were classified as starters (S), defined as those playing >50% of playing time throughout the entire season. The remaining 17 were reserves (R). Goalkeepers were excluded. A one-way ANOVA was used to determine the extent of differences in accumulated training load throughout the season by player status. Results: Accumulated training load and total distance covered for starters were greater than reserves ((S: 9431 ± 1471 vs. R: 6310 ± 2263 AU; p < 0.001) and (S: 401.7 ± 31.9 vs. R: 272.9 ± 51.4 km; p < 0.001), respectively) throughout the season. Conclusions: Starters covered a much greater distance throughout the season, resulting in almost double the training load compared to reserves. It is unknown if the high workloads experienced by starters or the low workloads of the reserves is more problematic. Managing player workloads in soccer may require attention to address potential imbalances that emerge between starters and reserves throughout a season.

Despite being the largest subset of the NCAA, Division III sports programs have had very little research dedicated to them regarding student attendance motivations. This study surveyed 620 undergraduate students at a midsize Division III school (total enrollment 10,902) to determine their attitudes toward attending athletic events and potential motivators for getting them into the stands. Students who had personally interacted with an athlete or coach had better attitudes toward university athletics than those who had not. Results also supported predictions of the theory of planned behavior, finding that attitudes toward individual sports were the strongest predictor of intentions to attend future games. Open-ended responses also asked students why they do not attend games and what would get them to attend more games. Analyses of these responses are followed by key recommendations for communications professionals at similar-size institutions seeking ways to increase student attendance at their athletic events.

Wind turbine power performance testing consists of power, temperature, air pressure and wind speed measurements collected for this study during which measuring uncertainties are involved. Due to the measurement uncertainties, the results of power performance testing are affected; therefore, it is necessary to consider the measurement uncertainties for evaluating the accuracy of turbine testing. For this purpose of this study, uncertainty analysis for one 5kW wind turbine power performance testing was conducted. The results of uncertainty analysis indicated that the uncertainty negatively affected the validity of conclusions drawn from power performance testing, and the uncertainty sources are various in different wind speed bins.

Research indicates that effort close to the lactate threshold during a soccer match is of importance to succeed, so a prospective study was conducted and a hierarchical achievement motivation approach model tested in relation to effort regulation among 55 male high level soccer players ( M = 23.6 yr., SD = 4.3). The motive to achieve success was expected to be positively associated with the mastery goal, which would be positively associated with playing time close to the lactate threshold in the first soccer match period, and this positively associated with the same magnitude of effort in the second period. We also examined whether the mastery goal would mediate the link between the motive to achieve success and playing time close to the lactate threshold during the first period and also playing time close to the lactate threshold in the first period would mediate the link between the mastery goal and playing time at this effort level during the second period. LISREL analyses supported these predictions. Additional hierarchical polynomial multiple regression analyses indicated unexpected significant nonlinear associations between the motive to avoid failure and effort regulation. The latter is partly explained by ideas from the catastrophe theory.

Subconcussive head impacts in sport may have a greater impact on neurological degradation versus concussive hits given the repetitive nature of these head impacts. The purpose of this investigation was to quantify the frequency, magnitude, and location of head impacts in an NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse team. There was no significant difference (p ≤ .05) in peak linear acceleration, peak rotational acceleration, and peak rotational velocity between games and practices. There was no significant difference (p ≤ .05) for PLA among player position and location of head impact. The quantity and intensity of subconcussive head impacts between practices and games were similar. These multiple subconcussive head impacts have the potential to lead to future neurological impairments.
