Adequate data collection frequency and gauging length for surface condition rating in Alberta

In order to ensure safe and comfortable riding, increase network serviceability, and slow pavement deterioration rate, two different strategies are being used simultaneously by transportation departments: routine maintenance and major rehabilitation. Within Alberta Infrastructure, the decision between these alternatives is made based on the pavement condition. Data are collected frequently for the purpose of pavement evaluation. Experienced engineers and technicians normally decide the most appropriate data collection procedure and gauging length associated with it.Key words: pavement, data collection, evaluation, gauging length, condition rating.

Nondestructive testing has become an integral part of pavement evaluation and rehabilitation strategies in recent years. Pavement evaluation employing the falling-weight deflectometer (FWD) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) can provide valuable information about pavement performance characteristics and be a very useful tool for project prioritization purposes and estimation of a construction budget at the network level. Traditional obstacles to the use of the FWD and GPR in pavement evaluation at the network level used to be expenses involved in data collection, limited resources, and lack of simplified analysis procedures. Indiana experience in pavement evaluation with the FWD and the GPR at the network level is presented. A network-level FWD and GPR testing program was implemented as a part of a study to overcome those traditional obstacles. Periodic generation of necessary data will be useful in determining how best to quantify structural capacity and estimate annual construction budgets. Three FWD tests per mile on 2,200 lane-mi of the network is recommended annually for network-level pavement evaluation. The information collected will allow the equivalent of 100% coverage of the whole network in 5 years. GPR data are recommended to be collected once every 5 years (if another thickness inventory is needed) after the successful network thickness inventory conducted in this study. GPR data collection is also recommended at the project level and for special projects. Both FWD and GPR data are recommended to be used as part of the pavement management system, together with automated collection of data such as international roughness index, pavement condition rating, rut depth, pavement quality index, and skid resistance.

Allocated budgets for maintenance of road networks are normally limited. Therefore, not all roads receive the required attention they deserve in a timely manner. These roads are left to deteriorate until the next maintenance round. The cost associated with delayed maintenance is significantly excessive. A Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS) can be a useful tool for evaluation, prioritization of Maintenance and Rehabilitation (M&R) projects, and determination of funding requirements and allocations. The pavement condition is normally indexed using a parameter called Pavement Condition Index (PCI) which represents an overall assessment of surface defects by type, severity and extent. Periodic collections of PCI over time for different sections within the roadway network provide an approach to monitor changes in pavement serviceability over time and can produce useful data to predict and evaluate required maintenance solutions and their associated cost. The researchers intend to use available data collected over the span of a year and a half on sections within the roadway network at the campus of Al-Zaytoonah University of Jordan (ZUJ) to study the relation between the maintenance cost and the pavement deterioration rate. This study may incorporate variables such as pavement age, traffic volumes, maintenance history and pavement condition assessment results. The available records of PCI will be analyzed and the findings will be clearly presented. The practical inclusion of the findings within the current PMMS used at the university will also be detailed.

The Pavement Condition Rating (PCR) has been used by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) in Saudi Arabia to report pavement condition. The World Bank developed the PCR in 1986. PCR is based on International Roughness Index (IRI), Rutting (RUT), Cracking (CRA), and Raveling (RAV). The MOT collects pavement condition data using a digital inspection vehicle called Road Surface Tester (RST) vehicle. On some expressways, the MOT measures the Skid Number (SN) using a Skid Test Unit as complimentary measurement for safety issues. The objective of this paper is to develop PCR model and pavement roughness model using survey data for overlaid sections on some expressways in the network with total observation number is 3469. The PCR model is a function of pavement age (T), Traffic Volume (TV), and IRI. The IRI model is a function of RUT, RAV, and CRA. Overlaid sections across the entire network have been selected to study the mechanisms of pavement deterioration, to develop the model and to draw conclusions.

Timely identification of undesirable crack, ride, and rut conditions is a critical issue in pavement management systems at the network level. The overall pavement surface condition is determined by these individual pavement surface conditions. A research project was carried out to implement an overall methodology for pavement condition prediction that uses artificial neural networks (ANNs). In the research, three ANN models were developed to predict the three key indices—crack rating, ride rating, and rut rating—used by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for pavement evaluation. The ANN models for each index were trained and tested by using the FDOT pavement condition database. In addition to the three key indices, FDOT uses a composite index called pavement condition rating (PCR), which is the minimum of the three key indices, to summarize overall pavement surface condition for pavement management. PCR is forecast with a combination of the three ANN models. Results of the research suggest that the ANN models are more accurate than the traditional regression models. These ANN models can be expected to have a significant effect on FDOT's pavement management system.

Highway rehabilitation is a blooming industry in the world and in particular North America. Highway agencies over the years have experienced problems in addressing pavement deteriorations, troubles with underlying pavement materials and management and evaluation of the existing pavements. This study has two objectives. The first objective is to discuss the types of distresses in both flexible and rigid pavements, pavement evaluation methods and equipment in use, pavement condition rating system, process of field investigation, life cycle cost analysis, and pavement selection strategies. A case study of Highway 401 eastbound collector lanes (from Avenue Road to Highway 404) was carried out to demonstrate the process of pavement evaluation and design. The second objective is to undergo an experimental program to evaluate the potential use of shingle waste into Superpave 19.0 and 12.5 asphalt mixes. The evaluation of volumetric properties of the mixes was performed. The trials demonstrated that volumetric properties of the mixes can be achieved at a lower asphalt content. Performance of mixes containing shingles was evaluated through various Highway agencies proved that incorporation of shingles enhances the performance of HMA mixes by improving durability, and increasing rutting resistance, while achieving comparable fatigue resistance.

ABSTRACT This study focused upon the functional capacity of mirror neurons in autistic children. 30 individuals, 10 carriers of the autistic syndrome (GCA), 10 with intellectual impairments (GDI), and 10 non-autistics (GCN) had registered eletroencephalogram from the brain area theoretically related to mirror neurons. Data collection procedure occurred prior to brain stimulation and after the stimulation session. During the second session, participants had to alternately process figures evoking neutral, happy, and/or sorrowful feelings. Results proved that, for all groups, the stimulation process in fact produced additional activation in the neural area under study. The level of activation was related to the format of emotional stimuli and the likelihood of boosting such stimuli. Since the increase of activation occurred in a model similar to the one observed for the control group, we may suggest that the difficulty people with autism have at expressing emotions is not due to nonexistence of mirror neurons.

The use of pavement condition data to support maintenance and resurfacing strategies and justify budget needs becomes more crucial as more data-driven approaches are being used by the state highway agencies (SHAs). Therefore, it is important to understand and thus evaluate the influence of data variability on pavement management activities. However, owing to a huge amount of data collected annually, it is a challenge for SHAs to evaluate the influence of data collection variability on network-level pavement evaluation. In this paper, network-level parallel tests were employed to evaluate data collection variability. Based on the data sets from the parallel tests, classification models were constructed to identify the segments that were subject to inconsistent rating resulting from data collection variability. These models were then used to evaluate the influence of data variability on pavement evaluation. The results indicated that the variability of longitudinal cracks was influenced by longitudinal lane joints, lateral wandering, and lane measurement zones. The influence of data variability on condition evaluation for state routes was more significant than that for interstates. However, high variability of individual metrics may not necessarily lead to high variability of combined metrics.
