In this paper, a new experiment is presented to measure the 1S–2S transition of positronium, the bound state of an electron and a positron. The goal is to improve the current accuracy by a factor of 5 to reach a precision of the order of 0.6 ppb, to check recent QED calculations. This accuracy is challenging, but it seems well within reach in view of the technological advances that have occurred during the last two decades. We will present the details of the experimental set-up, the advances in the production of positronium, the developments of the laser system, and as well our new experimental technique for the detection of Ps in the 2S state.

In this contribution to PSAS 2010, we report on recent progress on an experiment aimed at measuring small optical directional anisotropies by frequency metrology in a high-finesse ring cavity. We focus on our first experimental goal, the measurement of magneto-electric effects in gases. After a review of the expected effects in our set-up, we present the apparatus and the measurement procedure, showing that we already have the necessary sensitivity to start novel experiments.

We discuss the leading relativistic (nonrecoil and recoil) corrections to bound state g-factors of particles with arbitrary spin. These corrections are universal for any spin and depend only on the free particle gyromagnetic ratios. We explain the physical reasons behind this universality.

In this contribution to PSAS08 we report on the research activities developed in our Toulouse group in the framework of the BMV project, concerning the search for photon oscillations into massive particles, such as axion-like particles, in the presence of a strong transverse magnetic field. We recall our main result obtained in collaboration with LULI at École Polytechnique (Palaiseau, France). We also present the very preliminary results obtained with the BMV experiment which is set up at LNCMI (Toulouse, France).

The Conference for the Codification of International Law which met at The Hague from March 13 to April 12, 1930, was the first international conference specifically called for that purpose.In 1924 the League of Nations set up a Committee of Experts for the progressive codification of international law. The task of that committee was to select and propose for the first conference on codification a certain number of subjects within the field of international law. Three subjects, namely, Nationality, Territorial Waters and The Responsibility of States for Damage Caused in Their Territory to the Person or Property of Foreigners, were finally agreed on as the subjects to be considered by the first conference.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia are a bothersome symptom set that affect approximately one in every four males above the age of 50. First line treatment is typically medication, but when medications fail surgical therapy is the next option. Technological advances have made surgical therapy safer and more effective. One area that our group has particular interest and focus in is the application of the 532 nm laser in surgical therapy. The high power 532 nm laser is used to remove obstructive prostatic tissue and the laser energy is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin in the prostate tissue, resulting in effective tissue vaporization and removal. We review our experience with Greenlight laser system and its evolution from the original 60-watt laser to the most recent 180-watt Greenlight system with MoXy fiber.

We plan to measure several 2S–2P transition frequencies in μ4He+ and μ3He+ by means of laser spectroscopy with an accuracy of 50 ppm. This will lead to a determination of the corresponding nuclear rms charge radii with a relative accuracy of 3 × 10−4, limited by the uncertainty of the nuclear polarization contribution. First, these measurements will help to solve the proton radius puzzle. Second, these very precise nuclear radii are benchmarks for ab initio few-nucleon theories and potentials. Finally when combined with an ongoing measurement of the 1S–2S transition in He+, these measurements will lead to an enhanced bound-state QED test of the 1S Lamb shift in He+.

We show that the non-spherical charge distribution of the proton manifests itself in hydrogen hyperfine splitting as an increase (in absolute value) of the proton Zemach radius and polarization contributions.

The ASACUSA collaboration at CERN has previously measured the optical transition frequencies of antiprotonic helium to a precision of <1 part in 108 by laser spectroscopy. We describe some recent theoretical and experimental developmental work carried out by our collaboration to further improve the experimental precision.

The Laser Plasma Division at the Centre for Advanced Technology is engaged in a variety of research and development activities on laser-plasma interaction with special emphasis on laser-matter interaction at ultra-high intensities. An important aspect of our future work is studies in laser-plasma based acceleration using an elaborate infrastructural set-up of ultra-fast laser and plasma diagnostic systems and recently acquired 10TW, 50fs Ti :Sapphire laser system. This paper presents outline of the planned studies in this field.

Whilst the whole world is celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his renowned book, The Origin of Species, another anniversary should not be forgotten — the publication of The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique by W.M.S. Russell and R.L. Burch. The concomitance of the anniversaries of the two publications is not a coincidence, since, as reflected by the numerous quotes chosen by Russell from Darwin's masterpiece, numerous analogies can be found between the two works and the new ideas they describe. From a discrete birth, and after decades of struggle, the Three Rs concept can now celebrate its 50th anniversary, the result of its evolution through harsh selection and adaptation. The emergence of new types of techniques, in combination with the descent of modified old ones, testify to the undeniable change in our society toward a more efficient and more ethical science, through the progressive replacement of animal models. Both Darwin and Russell would no doubt have welcomed such progress, not only in terms of science, but also of moral values. One could also expect that, if Russell could have foreseen the incredible technological advances achieved 50 years later, where Replacement becomes a reality, as illustrated by some edifying examples, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique would have probably been defined as the One R concept.
