The measurement of groundwater temperature in shallow piezometers and standpipes

Accurate measurements of in situ groundwater temperature are important in many groundwater investigations. Temperature is often measured in the subsurface using an access tube in the form of a piezometer or monitoring well. The impact of standpipe materials on the conduction of heat into the subsurface has not previously been examined. This paper reports on the results of a laboratory experiment and a field experiment designed to determine if different standpipe materials or monitoring instrument configurations preferentially conduct heat into the shallow sub surface. Simulations with a numerical model were also conducted for comparison to the laboratory results. Statistical analysis of the laboratory results demonstrates that common standpipe materials, such as steel and polyvinylchloride (PVC), do not affect temperature in the subsurface. Simulations with a finite element flow and heat transport model also confirm that the presence of access tube materials does not affect shallow groundwater temperature measurements. Field results show that different instrument configurations, such as piezometers and water and air filled and sealed well points, do not affect subsurface temperature measurements.Key words: groundwater temperature, temperature measurement, conduction, piezometers, piezometer standpipes, thermal modelling.

The study of the impact of through cracks on structural integrity of jacket platforms still a challenge. The detection of such cracks is of great importance and a miss, or a spurious indication can lead to maintenance costs overrun. In the context of risk-based inspection and monitoring of such structures, a global methodology is proposed. The detection of large cracks is first addressed. A probabilistic model is proposed, taking into account the in situ inspections performances and the probability of crack presence. This is achieved by the use of the detection theory. Second, a finite element that is able to represent the structural behaviour of through cracked tubular nodes is proposed and a global structural integrity measure is suggested. Finally, inspection results are introduced in order to compute the expected platform structural integrity. It is illustrated by considering FMD inspections results of a tripod structure. Effects of false alarms can then be underlined.

Abstract. In this paper we study the impact of the modelling of N2O on the simulation of NO2 and HNO3 by comparing in situ vertical profiles measured at mid-latitudes with the results of the Reprobus 3-D CTM (Three-dimensional Chemical Transport Model) computed with the kinetic parameters from the JPL recommendation in 2002. The analysis of the measured in situ profile of N2O shows particular features indicating different air mass origins. The measured N2O, NO2 and HNO3 profiles are not satisfyingly reproduced by the CTM when computed using the current 6-hourly ECMWF operational analysis. Improving the simulation of N2O transport allows us to calculate quantities of NO2 and HNO3 in reasonable agreement with observations. This is achieved using 3-hourly winds obtained from ECMWF forecasts. The best agreement is obtained by constraining a one-dimensional version of the model with the observed N2O. This study shows that modelling the NOy partitioning with better accuracy relies at least on a correct simulation of N2O and thus of total NOy.

Abstract. This work evaluates the IASI CO product against independent in-situ aircraft data from the MOZAIC program and the POLARCAT aircraft campaign. The validation is carried out by analysing the impact of assimilation of eight months of IASI CO columns retrieved for the period of May to December 2008 into the global chemistry transport model LMDz-INCA. A modelling system based on a sub-optimal Kalman filter was developed and a specific treatment that takes into account the representativeness of observations at the scale of the model grid is applied to the IASI CO columns and associated errors before their assimilation in the model. Comparisons of the assimilated CO profiles with in situ CO measurements indicate that the assimilation leads to a considerable improvement of the model simulations in the middle troposphere as compared with a control run with no assimilation. Model biases in the simulation of background values are reduced and improvement in the simulation of very high concentrations is observed. The improvement is due to the transport by the model of the information present in the IASI CO retrievals. Our analysis also shows the impact of assimilation of CO on the representation of transport into the Arctic region during the POLARCAT summer campaign. A considerable increase in CO mixing ratios over the Asian source region was observed when assimilation was used leading to much higher values of CO during the cross-pole transport episode. These higher values are in good agreement with data from the POLARCAT flights that sampled this plume.

<p>The UTLS (Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere) is a key layer of the atmosphere as its chemical composition impacts both the troposphere and the stratosphere, and therefore plays a significant role in the climate system. Ozone at this altitude for instance plays a great role on surface temperature. Unlike in the stratosphere; it can be produced from the photolysis of precursors originating in the troposphere; mainly nitrous oxides (NO<sub>x</sub>) and carbon monoxide (CO) at this pressure range. Biomass burning emissions in particular are likely to play a significant role in the quantities of these species in the upper troposphere and thus impacting ozone balance. This effect is investigated thanks to the global chemistry transport model MOCAGE. Because of the strong vertical gradients in this layer of the atmosphere, well resolved in-situ observation dataset are valuable for model evaluation. As of measurements used to validate MOCAGE results, IAGOS in-situ measurements from equipped commercial aircraft were chosen for their fine vertical resolution as well as their wide geographical coverage. Using both of these tools, upper tropospheric air composition is studied, with a focus on ozone precursors and production linked to biomass burning emissions.</p><p>Firstly is investigated the direct impact of biomass burning emissions on CO concentration in the upper troposphere, as it is both a good tracer of wildfire plumes in the atmosphere and it plays a role in the upper troposphere chemical balance. For this purpose MOCAGE simulations spaning over the year of 2013 where biomass burning emissions were turned on and off are compared to estimate a contribution to upper tropospheric CO. These simulations were validated using all the available data from the IAGOS database. It was found that biomass burning impacted CO levels globally, with the strongest enhancement happening above the most emitting areas (equatorial Africa and the Boreal forests). The importance of a fast vertical transport pathway above the fires was also highlighted with the possible occurrence of pyroconvection in addition to deep convection. Secondly, other chemical species related to ozone production were looked upon. Peroxyacetyl Nitrates (PAN) for instance were found to be impacted by biomass burning as it is a product of NOx oxidation as well as the main "reservoir" specie for NOx in the upper troposphere. Ultimately, ozone production resulting from biomass burning emissions is investigated, both in biomass burning plumes encountered by IAGOS aircraft, and on a more global scale using the MOCAGE simulations.</p>

Abstract. We study the impact of temporal and spatial resolution and changes in modelled meteorological winds in the context of diffusive ensemble Lagrangian reconstructions. In situ tracer measurements are modelled based on coarse resolution global 3-D tracer distributions from a chemistry-transport model and on different time series of meteorological wind fields including a special set of 1-hourly analysed winds which is compared with 3 and 6-hourly operational analysed winds and with 3-hourly ERA-interim reanalysis. Increasing the time resolution of the advecting winds from three to one hour using the operational winds provides an improvement on diffusive reconstructions in the period studied but smaller than that obtained from six to three hours. The positive impact of using 1-hourly winds is similar to that obtained using ERA-Interim 3-hourly winds instead of the 3-hourly ECMWF operational analysis for the same period. This study sets out a technique to quantify differences in time series of meteorological wind fields here applied to assess the optimal space and time resolutions for ensemble Lagrangian reconstructions in the lower stratosphere.

Abstract. We estimate the uncertainty of CO2 flux estimates in atmospheric inversions stemming from differences between different global transport models. Using a set of observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs), we estimate this uncertainty as represented by the spread between five different state-of-the-art global transport models (ACTM, LMDZ, GEOS-Chem, PCTM and TM5), for both traditional in situ CO2 inversions and inversions of XCO2 estimates from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2). We find that, in the absence of relative biases between in situ CO2 and OCO-2 XCO2, OCO-2 estimates of terrestrial flux for TRANSCOM-scale land regions can be more robust to transport model differences than corresponding in situ CO2 inversions. This is due to a combination of the increased spatial coverage of OCO-2 samples and the total column nature of OCO-2 estimates. We separate the two effects by constructing hypothetical in situ networks with the coverage of OCO-2 but with only near-surface samples. We also find that the transport-driven uncertainty in fluxes is comparable between well-sampled northern temperate regions and poorly sampled tropical regions. Furthermore, we find that spatiotemporal differences in sampling, such as between OCO-2 land and ocean soundings, coupled with imperfect transport, can produce differences in flux estimates that are larger than flux uncertainties due to transport model differences. This highlights the need for sampling with as complete a spatial and temporal coverage as possible (e.g., using both land and ocean retrievals together for OCO-2) to minimize the impact of selective sampling. Finally, our annual and monthly estimates of transport-driven uncertainties can be used to evaluate the robustness of conclusions drawn from real OCO-2 and in situ CO2 inversions.

<p>The boreal biome is an important component of the global carbon (C) cycle. However, current estimates of its sink-source strength at regional scales and its responses to climate change rely primarily on models and thus remain uncertain. We investigated the C balance over a north Scandinavian boreal region by integrating observations of land-atmosphere fluxes and atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations at landscape to regional scales. We also placed a special focus to understand the impact of 2018 drought on the region. Flux estimates can be obtained through various techniques such as in-situ flux measurements, eddy covariance (EC) observations, vegetation modelling and inverse modelling of CO<sub>2</sub> observations. These techniques are however typically relevant at very different spatial scales ranging from plot scale to country-scale, which makes it difficult to compare them. The -Svartberget site (SVB), an established ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) station in Northern Sweden offers a unique range of observations, from in-situ flux measurements to EC fluxes and tall-tower concentration measurements. Here we used several vegetation models and an atmospheric transport model to connect the different scales for the period 2016-2018. The land-atmosphere carbon fluxes are from four different vegetation models (VPRM, LPJ-GUESS, ORCHIDEE and SiBCASA) and are used in the LUMIA/FLEXPART atmospheric transport model (Lund University Modular Inversion Algorithm) to generate estimates of atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentration. We found that the northern Sweden region remained as a C sink for the study period with models differed in sink strength. It was also noticed that the site SVB can be taken as a representative for the northern Sweden region. All models indicate similar but small reductions in the net CO<sub>2</sub> uptake for the drought year 2018 in northern Sweden except LPJ-GUESS that reveal limitations which call for further model improvement. Our work highlights the interest of using combined ecosystem,-atmosphere ICOS sites such as SVB in the Scandinavian region and shows that it is a promising way forward to monitor CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes at the regional scale.</p>
