A minor novel 1,7-naphthyridine alkaloid with an unprecedented skeleton, named anisopusine (1), was isolated from the CH2Cl2 soluble materials of an acetone extract of the bark of Anisopus mannii (Asclepiadaceae) together with four known compounds 5α-hydroxy-lup-20(29)-en-3β-yl eicosanoate (2), [6]-gingerdione (3), [6]-dehydrogingerdione (4), and ferulic acid (5). Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data, including 1D and 2D NMR, HR-EI-MS. Compounds (2–5) were characterized for the first time from this genus.

Seven compounds (1-7) were isolated from the marine sponge Aaptos aaptos living in the Vietnamese sea. Their structures were determined as 2 hours, 5 H,7 H,9 H-9 S-hydroxy-imidazo[1,5- α]pyridine-1,3-dione (1), 3-([9-methylhexadecyl]oxy)propane-1,2-diol 2, 2,3-dihydro-2,3-dioxoaaptamine (3), indol-3-aldehyde (4), methyl indole-3-carboxylate (5) 4-hydroxy-5-(indole-3-yl)−5-oxo-pentan-2-one (6), and thymidine (7) by extensive analysis of HR-ESI-MS, 1D, and 2D NMR spectral data, as well as by comparison of the spectral data with those reported in the literature. In addition, the absolute configuration of 1 was determined from the experimental ECD spectrum and comparison of this with the theoretical ECD calculations using the TDDFT method. Compounds 1 and 2 were isolated from nature for the first time. Compound 3 induced cytotoxic activity against SK-LU-1, MCF-7, HepG2, and SK-Mel-2 cell lines with IC50 values of 41.27 ± 2.63, 40.70 ± 2.65, 34.31 ± 3.43, and 36.63 ± 1.40 µM, respectively.

Urena lobata L. is used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. Tree roots are used to treat rheumatism, dysentery, poor digestion, flu, tonsils, malaria, asthma, goiter. Flowers are used to treat chickenpox, fever, and mental disorders. Branches, leaves or whole trees used to treat injuries bruises, rheumatism, mastitis, bites. Phytochemical investigation of the n-hexan and ethyl acetate extract of Urena lobata L. led to the isolation of β-sitosterol (1), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), a-acetylamino-phenylpropyl a-benzoylamino-phenylpropanoate (3), quercetin (4), and trans-tiliroside (5). Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including MS, 1D, 2D NMR and comparing with those reported in previous papers. Two compounds 3, 5 were isolated for the first time from Urena lobata plant.

AbstractAn indole alkaloid, 2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)-2-oxo-acetic acid (1) isolated for the first time from nature, in addition to the nine known compounds 5-hydroxy-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2), alocasin B (3), hyrtiosin B (4), α-monopalmitin (5), 1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S, 3R, 4E, 8Z)-2-[(2(R)-hydroctadecanoyl) amido]-4,8-octadecadiene-1,3-diol (6), 3-epi-betulinic acid (7), 3-epi-ursolic acid (8),β-sitosterol (9) andβ-sitosterol 3-O-β-D-glucoside (10) were isolated from the rhizomes ofAlocasia macrorrhiza(Araceae). Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data. Of these compounds,6exhibited the strongest cytotoxicity against the four tested human cancer cell lines (IC50of about 10 µM against Hep-2 larynx cancer cells).

As part of an ongoing search for new natural products from medicinal plants to treat type 2 diabetes, two new compounds, a megastigmane sesquiterpenoid sulfonic acid (1) and a new cyclohexylethanoid derivative (2), and seven related known compounds (3–9) were isolated from the leaves of Wedelia chinensis (Osbeck.) Merr. The structures of the compounds were conducted via interpretation of their spectroscopic data (1D and 2D NMR, IR, and MS), and the absolute configurations of compound 1 were determined by the modified Mosher’s method. The MeOH extract of W. chinensis was found to inhibit α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities as well as by the compounds isolated from this extract. Furthermore, compound 7 showed the strongest effect with IC50 values of 112.8 ± 15.1 μg/mL (against α-amylase) and 785.9 ± 12.7 μg/mL (against α-glucosidase). Compounds 1, 8, and 9 showed moderate α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects. Other compounds showed weak or did not show any effect on both enzymes. The results suggested that the antidiabetic properties from the leaves of W. chinensis are not simply a result of each isolated compound but are due to other components such as the accessibility of polyphenolic groups to α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities.

Chemical investigation of the CH2Cl2 and MeOH crude extracts of the roots of Melodorum fruticosum Lour. led to the isolation of 15 known compounds, of which 5, 10, and 12-15 are reported for the first time from this plant. In addition, melodorinol (7) was derivatized to afford six new (7a-7d and 7f-7g) analogues and one known compound (7e). Their structures were identified on the basic of spectroscopic data. Most of them were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against KB, HeLa, MCF-7 and HepG-2 cell lines. Compounds 4 and 7b were the most potent to all cell lines.

Column chromatography of the acetone extract of the lichen Cladina macaronesica (Sephadex LH-20, silica gel and silver nitrate-im pregnated silica gel) afforded eight triterpenes identified by chemical and spectral m eans. α-Amyrenone, lupenone, taraxerol, taraxerone and /so-arborinol acetate were isolated for the first time from lichens and (-)-usnic acid and five mononuclear phenolic compounds were also obtained, four for the first time as natural products. The possible transformation of perlatolic acid into these phenolic compounds is briefly outlined.
