Microbial conjugation studies of licochalcones (1–4) and xanthohumol (5) were performed by using the fungi Mucor hiemalis and Absidia coerulea. As a result, one new glucosylated metabolite was produced by M. hiemalis whereas four new and three known sulfated metabolites were obtained by transformation with A. coerulea. Chemical structures of all the metabolites were elucidated on the basis of 1D-, 2D-NMR and mass spectroscopic data analyses. These results could contribute to a better understanding of the metabolic fates of licochalcones and xanthohumol in mammalian systems. Although licochalcone A 4′-sulfate (7) showed less cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines compared to its substrate licochalcone A, its activity was fairly retained with the IC50 values in the range of 27.35–43.07 μM.

A new ent-kaurane glycoside, annoglabasin H (1), and three known ent-kauranes, annoglabasin E (2), annoglabasin B (3), and 19-nor- ent-kaurent-4-ol-17-oic acid (4) were isolated from the fruits of Annona glabra. Their structures were determined by the combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy, as well as by comparison with the NMR data reported in the literature. The cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated on four human cancer cell lines, LU-1, MCF-7, SK-Mel2, and KB. Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity on all tested human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 3.7 to 4.6 μM.

A novel highly oxygenated norsesquiterpene, pogonatherumol (1), with two known flavone C-glycosides (2-3), was isolated from Pogonatherum crinitum. The structure of the new compound was illuminated based on its spectroscopic data and X-ray analysis. Compounds 1 and 3 inhibited NO production in the mouse peritoneal macrophage (64.5 ± 7.2% and 61.6 ± 5.8%, respectively, at a concentration of 50 μM). The three compounds were inactive when tested against two human cancer cell lines (IC50 values > 50 μM).

One new arylsulfonamide (1) and a novel natural product (2) were isolated from the roots and rhizomes of Tupistra chinensis Baker. Their structures were characterized by physicochemical properties and spectroscopic methods, as 2-[2-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-ylsulfonylamino)-benzoylamino]-benzoic acid methyl ester (1), 2-[([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-ylsulfonyl)amino]-benzoic acid (2), respectively. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity of 1-2 was evaluated on human HCT116, HT29, A549, and H1299 tumor cell lines in vitro, respectively. Whereas, the result showed that these compounds displayed weak cytotoxicity in the human cancer cell lines.

Three new oleanane saponins (1–3), together with four known ones (4–7), were isolated from the aerial parts of Polyscias guilfoylei. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR experiments, including 1D TOCSY, DQF-COSY, ROESY, HSQC, and HMBC spectroscopy, as well as ESIMS analysis. The antiproliferative activity of all compounds was evaluated using three murine and human cancer cell lines; J774.A1, HEK-293, and WEHI-164. All the compounds were inactive except for 3β- O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyl]-echinocystic acid 28-[ O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6) O-β-D-glucopyranosyl] ester (3), which was active against all the cell lines.

To obtain diterpene glycosides from an aqueous extract of the aerial parts of Isodon henryi and further investigate their cytotoxicities, in this study, a total of seven compounds were isolated, including six ent-kaurane diterpene glycosides (1–6) and one diterpene aglycon (7). Among the seven ent-kaurane diterpenes obtained, four were novel compounds, including ent-7,20-epoxy- kaur-16-en-1α,6β,7β,15β-tetrahydroxyl-11-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (1), ent-7,20-epoxy-kaur-16-en- 6β,7β,14β,15β-tetrahydroxyl-1-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (2), ent-7,20-epoxy-kaur-16-en-6β,7β,15β- trihydroxyl-1-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (3), and ent-7,20-epoxy-kaur-16-en-7β,11β,14α,15β-tetrahydr- oxyl-6-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (4), and three were isolated from this plant for the first time (5–7). Their structures were elucidated by utilizing spectroscopic methods and electronic circular dichroism analyses. Furthermore, the cytotoxicities of all seven compounds were investigated in four human cancer cell lines, including A2780, BGC-823, HCT-116, and HepG2. The IC50 values of these diterpenes ranged from 0.18 to 2.44 mM in the tested cell lines. In addition, the structure–cytotoxicity relationship of diterpene glycosides was also evaluated to study the effect of glycosylation on the cytotoxicity of diterpene compounds.
