The infrared spectra of a number of humic acids and related materials obtained by the potassium bromide pressed pellet technique are summarized. Acidic properties of humic acids are largely due to clearly defined carboxylic acid frequencies at 3.9 μ and 5.8 to 5.85 μ. These bands are shifted in the expected manner by preparation of the sodium salts. Autoclaving of humic acids from lignite and from hydroquinone removes the carboxylic acid bands and produces material having bands in the long wave-length region that are at the same position as bands shown by bituminous coal and autoclaved cellulose. The potassium bromide technique has also revealed in the infrared spectra of low rank material a band at 6.65 μ which decreases markedly with increase in rank and may be related to the degree of condensation of aromatic nuclei.

Exciting forces and moments due to plane incident waves on a stationary platform are studied in this paper. The platform is a vertical cylinder with a finite draft and elliptical cross section. The mathematical solution to the diffraction problem is obtained on the basis of the linearized long wave approximation. Numerical results via Mathieu functions are presented for a shiplike body with beam-to-length ratio Various draft-to-depth ratios and angles of incidence are considered. Results have been checked with the limiting case of a circular cylinder for the long-wave length range. Aside from its own practical interest, the present theory provides a basis for comparison with other approximate theories of slender-body type and serves as a prelude to the corresponding calculations for arbitrary wavelengths.

Complexes of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with the ligands 2- acetamidopyridine (acpy) and 2-aminomethyl-6-methylpyridine (mepic) have been prepared and studied. They included [Co(acpy)2X2], [Co(mepic)2X2], [Ni(acpy)2X2], and [Ni-(mepic)2X2], in which X is Cl, Br, I, or NCS; [Co(acpy)2(NO3)2], [Co(mepic)2(NO3)2], [Ni(acpy)2(NO3)2], [Ni(mepic)3NO3]NO3, [Co(acpy)3](ClO4)2, [Co(mepic)3](ClO4)2, [Co(mepic)3](CoCl4), [Ni(acpy)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2, and [Ni(mepic)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2. The inner complex of 2-methylpyridine-6- carboxylic acid [Co(mepiac)2,2H2O)] was also isolated. In all cases, the magnetic properties, conductances, reflectance spectra, absorption spectra, and infrared spectra are in agreement with the concept that they are spin-free, six-coordinate octahedral complexes. The substance [Ni(mepic)2NO3]NO3 contains both bidentate and ionic nitrate.

Semi-coke is a specific solid fuel, which is mainly produced by upgrading low-rank coal. The poor reactivity of semi-coke makes a difficulty to its practical utilization in utility boilers. Previous research was mainly focused on the combustion behavior of semi-coke, while the industrial application has to be understood. In this paper, the effect of co-firing semi-coke and bituminous coal on the operation performance of pulverized boiler was numerically studied. The work was conducted on a 300 MW tangentially fired boiler, and the temperature distribution, the char burnout and NOx production were mainly examined. The results indicate that the incomplete combustion heat loss drops with the increase in semi-coke blending ratio. The NOx concentration increases from 186 mg/Nm3 for only firing the bituminous coal to 200, 214, and 255 mg/Nm3, when the blending ratio was 17%, 33% and 50%, respectively. With enhancing excess air coefficient for the co-firing condition, the combustion efficiency got improved, while NOx production increased very slightly. In general, the boiler is well adapted to co-firing semi-coke, and the semi-coke blending ratio of 1/3 with an excess air coefficient of 1.235 is recommended.
