Well-preserved coprolites (fossil faecal pellets) were found from lignite seams of the Lower Cretaceous Huolinhe Formation at the Huolinhe Basin in eastern Inner Mongolia, Northeast China. These coprolites provide a combination of following features: oval to cylindrical shaped with six longitudinal ridges, hexagonal to elliptical cross-sections, and one blunt end and the other pointed end. According to these distinct features and their size range, the producers of these coprolites are attributed to termites. Termites were estimated to have originated in the earliest Cretaceous with an evolutionary radiation in the Early Cretaceous. The presence of wood debris in the coprolites indicate that the Early Cretaceous termites from the Huolinhe Basin had wood-feeding habits; and anatomical features displaying on the wood debris further suggest their feeding preference was coniferous wood. Besides, the results of a k-means clustering analysis performed for these coprolites indicate that three clusters with different proportion were present, suggesting the division of labor in termites’ sociality existed as early as the Early Cretaceous.

In recent years, the use of partially concrete-filled steel tubular (PCFST) columns has been considered due to their cost-effectiveness and reduction of structural weight in bridge piers and building columns. One of the critical discussions about these columns is their impact resistance. In this article, the dynamic response of hollow and PCFST columns with elliptical cross-section under simultaneous loading of static axial compressive load and lateral impact load is presented using finite element modeling in ABAQUS software (FEA). To ensure the accuracy of the numerical modeling, the analysis results are compared with the results of previous works. The effects of different parameters such as impact velocity, the height of the impact location, the impact direction, the impact block mass, the size and shape of the impact block are investigated in this paper. The results of the numerical analysis showed that the partially filled specimens had better performance than the hollow specimens. The changes in impact direction and impact block mass parameters have a significant effect on the failure of the columns, especially when they are under high impact velocity. Changing the impact velocity significantly affects the impact resistance of specimens. However, the size and shape of the impact block did not have a significant effect on the displacement of the column against the impact loading.

AbstractThe object of this paper is the Saint-Venant torsion of a solid elliptical cylinder made of orthotropic homogeneous piezoelectric material. We find the shape of the homogeneous orthotropic piezoelectric elliptical cross section which does not warp under the applied torque. The sizes of the orthotropic piezoelectric solid elliptical cross section, which has the maximum value of torsional rigidity for a given cross-sectional area, are also determined.

Abstract The nonlocal effects of dimers consisted of two cylinders are studied, whose cross section is elliptical. Importantly, the results with dimers whose cross section is circular are compared. For comparison, the curvature of the ellipse is set the same with the circle, and four different geometries are considered. The electric field enhancement at the gap center and the absorption spectrum of the dimers are calculated. For the second geometry, either the electric field enhancement at the gap center or the absorption spectrum is approximately calculated using the first geometry, the frequencies corresponding to the peaks are totally different. Similarly, for the fourth geometry, either the electric field enhancement at the gap center or the absorption spectrum is approximately calculated using the third geometry, the disciplines of the peak values change as radius of curvature increases are totally different.

We study the influence of the shape of the plasma container on the dynamics of the reversed-field pinch (RFP). The geometries we consider are periodic cylinders with elliptical and circular-shaped cross-sections. Numerical simulations of fully nonlinear viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamics are carried out to illustrate how the plasma dynamics is affected by shaping. It is shown that independent of the plasma shape, the quantity $\beta$ , comparing the hydrodynamic pressure to the magnetic pressure, decreases for increasing values of the Lundquist number, but the pressure gradient fluctuations remain roughly constant, when compared to the Lorentz force. Different elliptical shapes of the cross-section of the domain lead to the excitation of different toroidal (or axial) magnetic and dynamic modes. Furthermore, it is found that in a geometry with circular cross-section, a significant local poloidal angular momentum is observed, absent in the geometries with elliptical cross-section. Because the confinement is dominantly determined by plasma movement, and the dynamics of the velocity and magnetic field are modified by the modification of the geometry, shaping can thus affect the performance of RFP devices.

Amyloid fibrils are associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases, including fibrils of amyloid β42 peptide (Aβ42) in Alzheimer’s disease. These fibrils are a source of toxicity to neuronal cells through surface-catalyzed generation of toxic oligomers. Detailed knowledge of the fibril structure may thus facilitate therapeutic development. We use small-angle scattering to provide information on the fibril cross-section dimension and shape for Aβ42 fibrils prepared in aqueous phosphate buffer at pH = 7.4 and pH 8.0 under quiescent conditions at 37 °C from pure recombinant Aβ42 peptide. Fitting the data using a continuum model reveals an elliptical cross-section and a peptide mass-per-unit length compatible with two filaments of two monomers, four monomers per plane. To provide a more detailed atomistic model, the data were fitted using as a starting state a high-resolution structure of the two-monomer arrangement in filaments from solid-state NMR (Protein Data Bank ID 5kk3). First, a twofold symmetric model including residues 11 to 42 of two monomers in the filament was optimized in terms of twist angle and local packing using Rosetta. A two-filament model was then built and optimized through fitting to the scattering data allowing the two N-termini in each filament to take different conformations, with the same conformation in each of the two filaments. This provides an atomistic model of the fibril with twofold rotation symmetry around the fibril axis. Intriguingly, no polydispersity as regards the number of filaments was observed in our system over separate samples, suggesting that the two-filament arrangement represents a free energy minimum for the Aβ42 fibril.

It is shown that shape anisotropy and intrinsic surface slip lead to equilibrium tilt of slippery particles in a creeping simple shear flow, even for nearly shape-isotropic particles with a cross-section that is close to circular provided the Navier-slip length is sufficiently large. We study a rigid particle with an elliptical cross-section, and of infinite extent in the vorticity direction, in simple shear. A Navier-slip boundary condition is imposed on its surface. When a Navier-slip length parameter $\lambda$ is infinite, an analytical solution is derived for the Stokes flow around a particle tilting in equilibrium at an angle $(1/2)\cos ^{-1}((1-k)/(1+k))$ to the flow direction where $0 \le k \le 1$ is the ratio of the semi-minor to semi-major axes of its elliptical cross-section. A regular perturbation analysis about this analytical solution is then performed for small values of $1/\lambda$ and a numerical continuation method implemented for larger values. It is found that an equilibrium continues to exist for any anisotropic particle $k < 1$ provided $\lambda \ge \lambda _{crit}(k)$ where $\lambda _{crit}(k)$ is a critical Navier-slip length parameter determined here. As the case $k \to 1$ of a circular cross-section is approached, it is found that $\lambda _{crit}(k) \to \infty$ , so the range of Navier-slip lengths allowing equilibrium tilt shrinks as shape anistropy is lost. Novel theoretical connections with equilibria for constant-pressure gas bubbles with surface tension are also pointed out.

Abstract This work is devoted to the numerical analysis of stabilization of the incompressible viscoelastic polymer fluid flow in the channel with elliptical cross-section. To describe the flow, mesoscopic rheological relations are used, and resolving non-stationary equations are derived. For solving them a special pseudo-spectral method is developed and implemented. As time increases, under certain conditions on the parameters of flow the solution to the non-stationary problem stabilizes and converges to the one of three branches of the solution to the corresponding stationary problem. It is shown that the variation of the parameters describing polymer microstructure leads to the switch of stabilized solution between these branches. The work provides the results of simulation of the flow stabilization and the analysis of the threshold values of parameters at which the switching occurs.
