Some long-chain spiropyranindolines have been studied at the air–water and the air–solid interfaces. We have measured the surface pressure–area isotherms of these compounds and two of them are characterized by a solid film. We have also investigated the spectroscopic properties (uv–visible) of these spiropyranindolines in monolayer and in solution. The deposition of monolayers on quartz slides allowed the study of the photochromic properties of these compounds at the air–solid interface. The 3′,3′-dimethyl-1′-hexadecyl-6-nitrospiro(2H-1-benzopyran-2,2′-indoline), irradiated at 253.7 nm, showed the appearance of a new absorption band at 570 nm which varied in intensity when the number of monolayers and the time of irradiation were changed.

Several coumarines and 2H-chromenes containing one or two long-chain substituents were synthesized and their spectroscopic properties (uv, nmr) were investigated. All compounds were studied at the air–water interface. Five of them give a monolayer which is characterized by the pressure–area isotherm. An interpretation of the isotherms is discussed in relation to the molecular structure.

Systematic research on Monomolecular Layer of Copper (II) Phthalocyanine (CuPc) and porphyrin (Por) derivatives bas been done. In this paper an attention is focused upon the molecular orientation in monomolecular layer of some symmetrically and asymmetrically substituted CuPc and Por by means of the surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherm method, the transmission electron micrographs (TEM) , polarized UV-visible spectra.

Long chain fatty acids and large, rigid, aromatic molecules form a monomolecular layer on the surface of clean mercury. The surface pressure isotherms of these systems have been measured previously. In this paper, the scaled particle theory is applied to such monolayers with a number of simplifying assumptions. With a single adjustable parameter, the interaction of the molecules with the substrate and the general features of the surface pressure isotherms of the long chain fatty acids, anthracene, naphthalene, and cholesterol at intermediate liquid densities are fairly well reproduced.

In the 21st century, the optical computation is likely to be the basic technology for processing lots of information at high speed. The aim of the present research work is to develop optical logic gates or memory chips. For this purpose, we have examined the suitability of organic nonlinear optical dye material Vanadyl-phthalocyanine (VOPc). Large single crystals of this material have been fabricated by using Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) technique. The epitaxial films were formed on the substrate under optimum operating conditions. However, the epitixial growth is observed only up to a limited thickness. Above this thickness, the films become non-epitaxial, which can be improved by annealing. The reformation of the epitaxial films has been confirmed. We have also reported the effects of the environment of high temperature on the multilayered tetra-tert-butyl-Vanadyl-phthalocyanine ((t-bu)4VOPc) films, formed by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. The solvent used to dissolve ((t-bu)4VOPc) was 1,2-dichloroethane. The monolayer on the surface of the water was transferred to a glass substrate by the vertical dipping method. If the multilayered stack is too thick, the molecular arrangement of the film may get disturbed. The improvement in the molecular arrangement of the LB films was examined and confirmed by measuring it’s nonlinear optical susceptibility, using Maker Fringe Method. Monolayer formation on water surface depends on the surface pressure-area isotherm. If this monolayer formation is not perfect, multiplayer stacks cannot be formed. The molecular films were aligned almost perpendicular to the substrate, as estimated from the limiting molecular area of surface pressure-area isotherm. The molecular organization of the monolayer on the substrate and the molecular structure of the multilayered ((t-bu)4VOPc) films are discussed.

The synthesis and study of the structure and photochromic properties of the new salt spiropyrans of the indoline series containing chlorine and bromine atoms as a substituent at the 6' position in 2H-chromene moiety are presented. The structure of the obtained compounds was confirmed by NMR 1H spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The compounds are photochromic; the long-wavelength maximum of the absorption band of their open photoinduced form has a significant hypsochromic shift, and the lifetime substantially increases in comparison with the fluorine analog.
