A reinvestigation of the rate of reaction of N-decylimidazole with p-nitrophenyl decanoate
Keyword(s):
Reinvestigation of the reaction of p-nitrophenyl decanoate with N-decylimidazole shows that the rate enhancement attributable to 1:1 complex formation between reactants is small (12-fold), consistent with what we have found in related systems, and much less than values reported by other workers. Kinetics were carried out at very low concentrations to avoid problems of aggregation, and at pH 8.0 to minimize the contribution from solvolysis. Numerous difficulties were encountered with reactive degradation products from Tris buffers. At pH 8.0 the apparent second order rate constant was 2.25 ± 0.64 M−1 s−1.
