In this paper we extend the result on base point freeness of the powers of the determinant bundle on the moduli space of vector bundles on a curve. We describe the parabolic analogues of parabolic theta functions, then we determine a uniform bound depending only on the rank of the parabolic bundles. In order to get this bound, we construct a parabolic analogue of Grothendieck's scheme of quotients, which parametrizes quotient bundles of a parabolic bundle, of fixed parabolic Hilbert polynomial. We prove an estimate for its dimension, which extends the result of Popa and Roth on the dimension of the Quot scheme. As an application of the theorem on base point freeness, we characterize parabolic semistability on the algebraic stack of quasi-parabolic bundles as the base locus of the linear system of the parabolic determinant bundle.

AbstractModuli spaces of stable parabolic bundles of parabolic degree 0 over the Riemann sphere are stratified according to the Harder–Narasimhan filtration of underlying vector bundles. Over a Zariski open subset $$\mathscr {N}_{0}$$ N 0 of the open stratum depending explicitly on a choice of parabolic weights, a real-valued function $$\mathscr {S}$$ S is defined as the regularized critical value of the non-compact Wess–Zumino–Novikov–Witten action functional. The definition of $$\mathscr {S}$$ S depends on a suitable notion of parabolic bundle ‘uniformization map’ following from the Mehta–Seshadri and Birkhoff–Grothendieck theorems. It is shown that $$-\mathscr {S}$$ - S is a primitive for a (1,0)-form $$\vartheta $$ ϑ on $$\mathscr {N}_{0}$$ N 0 associated with the uniformization data of each intrinsic irreducible unitary logarithmic connection. Moreover, it is proved that $$-\mathscr {S}$$ - S is a Kähler potential for $$(\Omega -\Omega _{\mathrm {T}})|_{\mathscr {N}_{0}}$$ ( Ω - Ω T ) | N 0 , where $$\Omega $$ Ω is the Narasimhan–Atiyah–Bott Kähler form in $$\mathscr {N}$$ N and $$\Omega _{\mathrm {T}}$$ Ω T is a certain linear combination of tautological (1, 1)-forms associated with the marked points. These results provide an explicit relation between the cohomology class $$[\Omega ]$$ [ Ω ] and tautological classes, which holds globally over certain open chambers of parabolic weights where $$\mathscr {N}_{0} = \mathscr {N}$$ N 0 = N .

We study a certain moduli space of irreducible Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a unitary vector bundle over a punctured Riemann surface. The connections used have non-trivial holonomy around the punctures lying in fixed conjugacy classes of U (n) and differ from each other by elements of a weighted Sobolev space; these connections give rise to parabolic bundles in the sense of Mehta and Seshadri. We show in fact that the moduli space of stable parabolic bundles can be identified with our moduli space of HYM connections, by proving that every stable bundle admits a unique unitary gauge orbit of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections.

Abstract Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 3$ . In this paper, we give a new geometric description of the theta map for moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant. In order to do this, we describe a fibration of (a birational model of) the moduli space, whose fibers are GIT quotients $(\mathbb {P}^1)^{2g}//\text {PGL(2)}$ . Then, we identify the restriction of the theta map to these GIT quotients with some explicit degree 2 osculating projection. As a corollary of this construction, we obtain a birational inclusion of a fibration in Kummer $(g-1)$ -varieties over $\mathbb {P}^g$ inside the ramification locus of the theta map.

We are concerned with the problem of the stability of the syzygy bundles associated to base-point-free vector spaces of forms of the same degree d on the projective space of dimension n. We deduce directly, from M. Green's vanishing theorem for Koszul cohomology, that any such bundle is stable if its rank is sufficiently high. With a similar argument, we prove the semistability of a certain syzygy bundle on a general complete intersection of hypersurfaces of degree d in the projective space. This answers a question of H. Flenner [Comment. Math. Helv.59 (1984) 635–650]. We then give an elementary proof of H. Brenner's criterion of stability for monomial syzygy bundles, avoiding the use of Klyachko's results on toric vector bundles. We finally prove the existence of stable syzygy bundles defined by monomials of the same degree d, of any possible rank, for n at least 3. This extends the similar result proved, for n = 2, by L. Costa, P. Macias Marques and R. M. Miro-Roig [J. Pure Appl. Algebra214 (2010) 1241–1262]. The extension to the case n at least 3 has been also, independently, obtained by P. Macias Marques in his thesis [arXiv:0909.4646/math.AG (2009)].

We generalize Bertram's work on rank two vector bundles to an irreducible projective nodal curve C. We use the natural rational map [Formula: see text] defined by [Formula: see text] to study a compactification [Formula: see text] of the moduli space [Formula: see text] of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 2 and determinant L on C. In particular, we resolve the indeterminancy of ϕL in the case deg L = 3,4 via a sequence of three blow-ups with smooth centers.

Abstract We study codimension one holomorphic distributions on the projective three-space, analyzing the properties of their singular schemes and tangent sheaves. In particular, we provide a classification of codimension one distributions of degree at most 2 with locally free tangent sheaves and show that codimension one distributions of arbitrary degree with only isolated singularities have stable tangent sheaves. Furthermore, we describe the moduli space of distributions in terms of Grothendieck’s Quot-scheme for the tangent bundle. In certain cases, we show that the moduli space of codimension one distributions on the projective space is an irreducible, nonsingular quasi-projective variety. Finally, we prove that every rational foliation and certain logarithmic foliations have stable tangent sheaves.

AbstractIn the Simpson moduli space M of semi-stable sheaves with Hilbert polynomial dm − 1 on a projective plane we study the closed subvariety M' of sheaves that are not locally free on their support. We show that for d ≥4 , it is a singular subvariety of codimension 2 in M. The blow up of M along M' is interpreted as a (partial) modification of M \ M' by line bundles (on support).
