Polarized parton distribution functions are determined by a χ2 analysis of polarized deep inelastic experimental data. In this paper, uncertainty of obtained distribution functions is investigated by a Hessian method. We find that the uncertainty of the polarized gluon distribution is fairly large. Then, we estimate the gluon uncertainty by including the fake data which are generated from prompt photon process at RHIC. We observed that the uncertainty could be reduced with these data.

Some non-trivial features of the QCD-improved parton model relevant to applications on heavy particle production and semi-hard (small-x) processes of interest to collider physics are reviewed. The underlying ideas are illustrated by a simple example. Limitations of the naive parton formula as well as first order corrections and subtractions to it are dis-cussed in a quantitative way. The behavior of parton distribution functions at small x and for heavy quarks are discussed. Recent work on possible impact of unconventional small-x behavior of the parton distributions on small-x physics at SSC and Tevatron are summarized. The Drell-Yan process is found to be particularly sensitive to the small x dependence of parton distributions. Measurements of this process at the Tevatron can provide powerful constraints on the expected rates of semi-hard processes at the SSC.

An extraction of the parton distributions of the proton by a next-to-leading order QCD fit in the framework of the Standard Model is presented. The fit implements a novel decomposition of the quark species into up- and down-type quark distributions, which is the key to enable a determination of flavor separated parton distributions from a single experiment. The fit is performed on the inclusive unpolarized neutral and charged current cross-section measurements by the H1 collaboration at HERA. The discussion of uncertainties of parton distribution functions is based upon but extends the QCD analysis published together with the H1 data.

We calculate nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs), using the constituent quark model. We find the bounded valon distributions in a nuclear to be related to free valon distributions in a nucleon. By using improved bounded valon distributions for a nuclear with atomic number A and the partonic structure functions inside the valon, we can calculate the nuclear structure function in x space. The results for nuclear structure-function ratio [Formula: see text] at some values of A, are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Analyses of LHC (and other!) experiments require robust and statistically accurate determinations of the structure of the proton, encoded in the parton distribution functions (PDFs). The standard description of hadronic processes relies on factorization theorems, which allow a separation of process-dependent short-distance physics from the universal long-distance structure of the proton. Traditionally the PDFs are obtained from fits to experimental data. However, understanding the long-distance properties of hadrons is a nonperturbative problem, and lattice QCD can play a role in providing useful results from first principles. In this talk we compare the different approaches used to determine PDFs, and try to assess the impact of existing, and future, lattice calculations.

An overview of our ongoing extractions of parton distribution functions of the nucleon is given. First JAM results on the determination of spin-dependent parton distribution functions from world data on polarized deep-inelastic scattering are presented first, and followed by a short report on the status of the JR unpolarized parton distributions. Different aspects of PDF analysis are briefly discussed, including effects of the nuclear structure of targets, target-mass corrections and higher twist contributions to the structure functions.

Abstract It is common lore that Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) in the $$ \overline{\mathrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ factorization scheme can become negative beyond leading order due to the collinear subtraction which is needed in order to define partonic cross sections. We show that this is in fact not the case and next-to-leading order (NLO) $$ \overline{\mathrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ PDFs are actually positive in the perturbative regime. In order to prove this, we modify the subtraction prescription, and perform the collinear subtraction in such a way that partonic cross sections remain positive. This defines a factorization scheme in which PDFs are positive. We then show that positivity of the PDFs is preserved when transforming from this scheme to $$ \overline{\mathrm{MS}} $$ MS ¯ , provided only the strong coupling is in the perturbative regime, such that the NLO scheme change is smaller than the LO term.

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) provide process-independent information about the quarks and gluons inside hadrons. Although the gluon PDF can be obtained from a global fit to experimental data, it is not constrained well in the large-[Formula: see text] region. Theoretical gluon-PDF studies are much fewer than those of the quark PDFs. In this work, we present the first lattice-QCD results that access the [Formula: see text]-dependence of the gluon unpolarized PDF of the nucleon. The lattice calculation is carried out with nucleon momenta up to 2.16 GeV, lattice spacing [Formula: see text] fm, and with valence pion masses of 310 and 690 MeV. We use reduced Ioffe-time distributions to cancel the renormalization and implement a one-loop perturbative pseudo-PDF gluon matching. We neglect mixing of the gluon operator with the quark singlet sector. Our matrix-element results in coordinate space are consistent with those obtained from the global PDF fits of CT18 NNLO and NNPDF3.1 NNLO. Our fitted gluon PDFs at both pion masses are consistent with global fits in the [Formula: see text] region.
