The BaBar experiment is currently operating near the rate limit of its ability to log event data to disk and tape using the existing hardware and software systems. Consequently we have chosen to design and implement a new system for logging event data. The new system is designed to be scalable, so that the data rate can be increased by adding systems at one of three levels. It also has the property that data can be logged at almost unlimited burst rates without introducing dead time. The key to these features lies in the use of many nodes within the level three trigger system of BaBar. This allows the events to first be logged to local disks within the trigger system, and then later to be merged to any of multiple merge servers in non-real-time.

ABSTRACT Real-time flight data from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) has been integrated, through a data interface, with a flight performance computer program to predict aviation emissions at altitude. The ADS-B, along with data from Mode-S, are then used to ‘fly’ selected long-range aircraft models (Airbus A380-841, A330-343 and A350-900) and one turboprop (ATR72). Over 2,500 flight trajectories have been processed to demonstrate the integration between databases and software systems. Emissions are calculated for altitudes greater than 3,000 feet (609m) and exclude landing and take-off cycles. This proof of concept fills a gap in the aviation emissions inventories, since it uses real-time flights and produces estimates at a very granular level. It can be used to analyse emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide ( $\mathrm{CO}_2$ ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides ( $\mathrm{NO}_x$ ) and water vapour on a specific route (city pair), for a specific aircraft, for an entire fleet, or on a seasonal basis. It is shown how $\mathrm{NO}_x$ and water vapour emissions concentrate around tropospheric altitudes only for long-range flights, and that the cruise range is the biggest discriminator in the absolute value of these and other exhaust emissions.

AbstractThis article examines the impact and repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on patterns of armed conflict around the world. It argues that there are two main ways in which the pandemic is likely to fuel, rather than mitigate, conflict and engender further violence in conflict-prone countries: (1) the exacerbating effect of COVID-19 on the underlying root causes of conflict and (2) the exploitation of the crisis by governments and non-state actors who have used the coronavirus to gain political advantage and territorial control. The article uses data collected in real-time by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) and the Johns Hopkins University to illustrate the unfolding and spatial distribution of conflict events before and during the pandemic and combine this with three brief case studies of Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Libya. Descriptive evidence shows how levels of violence have remained unabated or even escalated during the first five months of the pandemic and how COVID-19-related social unrest has spread beyond conflict-affected countries.

Abstract Abnormal surface pressure is typically the first indicator of a number of problematic events, including kicks, losses, washouts and stuck pipe. These events account for 60–70% of all drilling-related nonproductive time, so their early and accurate detection has the potential to save the industry billions of dollars. Detecting these events today requires an expert user watching multiple curves, which can be costly, and subject to human errors. The solution presented in this paper is aiming at augmenting traditional models with new machine learning techniques, which enable to detect these events automatically and help the monitoring of the drilling well. Today’s real-time monitoring systems employ complex physical models to estimate surface standpipe pressure while drilling. These require many inputs and are difficult to calibrate. Machine learning is an alternative method to predict pump pressure, but this alone needs significant labelled training data, which is often lacking in the drilling world. The new system combines these approaches: a machine learning framework is used to enable automated learning while the physical models work to compensate any gaps in the training data. The system uses only standard surface measurements, is fully automated, and is continuously retrained while drilling to ensure the most accurate pressure prediction. In addition, a stochastic (Bayesian) machine learning technique is used, which enables not only a prediction of the pressure, but also the uncertainty and confidence of this prediction. Last, the new system includes a data quality control workflow. It discards periods of low data quality for the pressure anomaly detection and enables to have a smarter real-time events analysis. The new system has been tested on historical wells using a new test and validation framework. The framework runs the system automatically on large volumes of both historical and simulated data, to enable cross-referencing the results with observations. In this paper, we show the results of the automated test framework as well as the capabilities of the new system in two specific case studies, one on land and another offshore. Moreover, large scale statistics enlighten the reliability and the efficiency of this new detection workflow. The new system builds on the trend in our industry to better capture and utilize digital data for optimizing drilling.
