The problem of reconstructing a three-dimensional object from parallel slices has application in computer vision and medicine. Here we explore a specific existence question: given two polygons in parallel planes, is it always possible to find a polyhedron that has those polygons as faces, and whose vertices are precisely the vertices of the two polygons? We answer this question in the negative by providing an example of two polygons that cannot be connected to form a simple polyhedron. One polygon is a triangle, the other a somewhat complicated shape with spiraling pockets.

Abstract To reconstruct the points in three dimensional space, we need at least two images. In this paper we compared two different methods: the first uses only two images, the second one uses three. During the research we measured how camera resolution, camera angles and camera distances influence the number of reconstructed points and the dispersion of them. The paper presents that using the two-view method, we can reconstruct significantly more points than using the other one, but the dispersion of points is smaller if we use the three-view method. Taking into consideration the different camera settings, we can say that both the two- and three-view method behaves the same, and the best parameters are also the same for both methods.

This paper addresses the mathematical problem of reconstructing a visually textured plane surface from a pair of photographs taken from finitely separated camera positions of unknown relative orientation, lying on the same side or on opposite sides of the visible plane. If the surface lies at infinity, or perpendicularly bisects the line joining the centres of projection O and O', the reconstruction fails; otherwise the two images permit either one or two three-dimensional interpretations, obtainable by diagonalizing a 3 x 3 matrix. If all the visible texture elements lie nearer to one viewpoint than to the other, then there are two interpretations, which coincide if the line OO' is perpendicular to the visible plane. Otherwise, only the veridical interpretation survives. The relevance of these results to human and computer vision is briefly discussed.

Considering any finite three-dimensional object, a “projection” is here defined as a two-dimensional representation of the object's mass per unit area on a plane normal to a given projection axis, here taken as they-axis. Since the object can be seen as being built from parallel, thin slices, the relation between object structure and its projection can be reduced by one dimension. It is assumed that an electron microscope equipped with a tilting stage records the projectionWhere the object has a spatial density distribution p(r,ϕ) within a limiting radius taken to be unity, and the stage is tilted by an angle 9 with respect to the x-axis of the recording plane.

Chaperonins are a class of proteins characterized by their role as morphogenetic factors. They trantsiently interact with the structural components of certain biological aggregates (viruses, enzymes etc), promoting their correct folding, assembly and, eventually transport. The groEL factor from E. coli is a conspicuous member of the chaperonins, as it promotes the assembly and morphogenesis of bacterial oligomers and/viral structures.We have studied groEL-like factors from two different bacteria:E. coli and B.subtilis. These factors share common morphological features , showing two different views: one is 6-fold, while the other shows 7 morphological units. There is also a correlation between the presence of a dominant 6-fold view and the fact of both bacteria been grown at low temperature (32°C), while the 7-fold is the main view at higher temperatures (42°C). As the two-dimensional projections of groEL were difficult to interprete, we studied their three-dimensional reconstruction by the random conical tilt series method from negatively stained particles.

Abstract For a robust three-dimensional video transmission through error prone channels, an efficient multiple description coding for multi-view video based on the correlation of spatial polyphase transformed subsequences (CSPT_MDC_MVC) is proposed in this article. The input multi-view video sequence is first separated into four subsequences by spatial polyphase transform and then grouped into two descriptions. With the correlation of macroblocks in corresponding subsequence positions, these subsequences should not be coded in completely the same way. In each description, one subsequence is directly coded by the Joint Multi-view Video Coding (JMVC) encoder and the other subsequence is classified into four sets. According to the classification, the indirectly coding subsequence selectively employed the prediction mode and the prediction vector of the counter directly coding subsequence, which reduces the bitrate consumption and the coding complexity of multiple description coding for multi-view video. On the decoder side, the gradient-based directional interpolation is employed to improve the side reconstructed quality. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm is verified by experiments in the JMVC coding platform.

The paper is intended to provide an overview of advanced robotic technologies within the context of Postal Automation services. The main functional requirements of the application are briefly referred, as well as the state of the art and new emerging solutions. Image Processing and Pattern Recognition have always played a fundamental role in Address Interpretation and Mail sorting and the new challenging objective is now off-line handwritten cursive recognition, in order to be able to handle all kind of addresses in a uniform way. On the other hand, advanced electromechanical and robotic solutions are extremely important to solve the problems of mail storage, transportation and distribution, as well as for material handling and logistics. Finally a short description of new services of Postal Automation is referred, by considering new emerging services of hybrid mail and paper to electronic conversion.
