Additive manufacturing (AM) is known as the technology which enable using a layer wise in fabrication of a complex part directly from CAD files without using any specific tooling. This manufacturing techniques offers many strategic advantages which include design freedom for the build of complex part geometries which cannot be made in other way, the ability to build functional part in a small size for the end user customization and its ability to do improvement for the expensive part in aerospace and other industries. The aim of this research is to study the effect of process parameter such as layer thickness, infill density and object orientation to the accuracy of printed part measurement with CAD model, surface roughness and mechanical strength of PLA and ABS material. Therefore, it is important to find the optimum value of dimensional accuracy, surface roughness and mechanical strength for both materials. To achieve the optimum value of dimensional accuracy, surface roughness and mechanical strength for both materials, Taguchi method L4 orthogonal array is used to conduct this experiment and Minitab 18 software will analyze the result and shows the best optimum value. The result from ANOVA analysis shows that object orientation gives highest contribution to the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness for both materials. Meanwhile, for mechanical strength layer thickness highly contributed to the ABS material and object orientation for the PLA material. A Car Backseat Headrest Hanger/Hook model is fabricated by the best optimal combination and level of process parameter of mechanical strength.

The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of feedforward and feedback processes on grip force regulation and object orientation during functional manipulation tasks. One patient with massive somatosensory loss resulting from large fibre sensory neuropathy, and ten control participants were recruited. Three experiments were conducted: 1) perturbation to static holding; 2) discrete vertical movement; and 3) functional grasp and place. The availability of visual feedback was also manipulated to assess the nature of compensatory mechanisms. Results from experiment 1 indicated that both the deafferented patient and controls used anticipatory grip force adjustments prior to self-induced perturbation to static holding. The patient exhibited increased grip response time, but the magnitude of grip force adjustments remained correlated with perturbation forces in the self-induced and external perturbation conditions. In experiment 2, the patient applied peak grip force substantially in advance of maximum load force. Unlike controls, the patient's ability to regulate object orientation was impaired without visual feedback. In experiment 3, the duration of unloading, transport and release phases were longer for the patient, with increased deviation of object orientation at phase transitions. These findings show that the deafferented patient uses distinct modes of anticipatory control according to task constraints, and that responses to perturbations are mediated by alternative afferent information. The loss of somatosensory feedback thus appears to impair control of object orientation, while variation in the temporal organization of functional tasks may reflect strategies to mitigate object instability associated with changes in movement dynamics.

Humans typically fixate on objects before moving their arm to grasp the object. Patients with ALS disorder can also select the object with their intact eye movement, but are unable to move their limb due to the loss of voluntary muscle control. Though several research works have already achieved success in generating the correct grasp type from their brain measurement, we are still searching for fine controll over an object with a grasp assistive device (orthosis/exoskeleton/robotic arm). Object orientation and object width are two important parameters for controlling the wrist angle and the grasp aperture of the assistive device to replicate a human-like stable grasp. Vision systems are already evolved to measure the geometrical attributes of the object to control the grasp with a prosthetic hand. However, most of the existing vision systems are integrated with electromyography and require some amount of voluntary muscle movement to control the vision system. Due to that reason, those systems are not beneficial for the users with brain-controlled assistive devices. Here, we implemented a vision system which can be controlled through the human gaze. We measured the vertical and horizontal electrooculogram signals and controlled the pan and tilt of a cap-mounted webcam to keep the object of interest in focus and at the centre of the picture. A simple ‘signature’ extraction procedure was also utilized to reduce the algorithmic complexity and system storage capacity. The developed device has been tested with ten healthy participants. We approximated the object orientation and the size of the object and determined an appropriate wrist orientation angle and the grasp aperture size within 22 ms. The combined accuracy exceeded 75%. The integration of the proposed system with the brain-controlled grasp assistive device and increasing the number of grasps can offer more natural manoeuvring in grasp for ALS patients.

Object orientation is a powerful and widely used paradigm for abstraction and structuring in programming. Many languages are designed with this principle or support different degrees of object orientation. In synchronous languages, originally developed to design embedded reactive systems, there are only few object-oriented influences. However, especially in combination with a statechart notation, the modeling process can be improved by facilitating object orientation as we argue here. At the same time the graphical representation can be used to illustrate the object-oriented design of a system. Synchronous statechart dialects, such as the SCCharts language, provide deterministic concurrency for specifying safety-critical systems. Using SCCharts as an example, we illustrate how an object-oriented modeling approach that supports inheritance can be introduced. We further present how external, i.e., host language, objects can be included in the SCCharts language. Specifically, we discuss how the recently developed concepts of scheduling directives and scheduling policies can be used to ensure the determinism of objects while retaining encapsulation.

ABSTRACTHow humans visually select where to grasp an object depends on many factors, including grasp stability and preferred grasp configuration. We examined how endpoints are selected when these two factors are brought into conflict: Do people favor stable grasps or do they prefer their natural grasp configurations? Participants reached to grasp one of three cuboids oriented so that its two corners were either aligned with, or rotated away from, each individual’s natural grasp axis (NGA). All objects were made of brass (mass: 420 g) but the surfaces of their sides were manipulated to alter friction: 1) all-brass, 2) two opposing sides covered with wood, while the other two remained of brass, or 3) two opposing sides covered with sandpaper, and the two remaining brass sides smeared with vaseline. Grasps were evaluated as either clockwise (thumb to the left of finger in frontal plane) or counterclockwise of the NGA. Grasp endpoints depended on both object orientation and surface material. For the all-brass object, grasps were bimodally distributed in the NGA-aligned condition but predominantly clockwise in the NGA-unaligned condition. These data reflected participants’ natural grasp configuration independently of surface material. When grasping objects with different surface materials, endpoint selection changed: Participants sacrificed their usual grasp configuration to choose the more stable object sides. A model in which surface material shifts participants’ preferred grip angle proportionally to the perceived friction of the surfaces accounts for our results. Our findings demonstrate that a stable grasp is more important than a biomechanically comfortable grasp configuration.NEW & NOTEWORTHYWhen grasping an object, humans can place their fingers at several positions on its surface. The selection of these endpoints depends on many factors, with two of the most important being grasp stability and grasp configuration. We put these two factors in conflict and examine which is considered more important. Our results highlight that humans are not reluctant to adopt unusual grasp configurations in order to satisfy grasp stability.

AbstractThis essay analyzes American gun culture, past and present, through two lenses: a set of early Euro-American writings on weapons and defense, including Charles Brockden Brown's well-known novel Edgar Huntly, and a little-known but capacious archive of Native American materials, philosophy, and story. While the Euro-American writings and the Indigenous archive both raise crucial questions about the relation between weapons and human subjectivity, only the Indigenous archive presents vital alternative object orientations that promote peace. Considering wampum belts in particular as an Indigenous mechanism of peace, this essay argues that to understand American gun violence we must pay attention to Indigenous efforts to cultivate relationships by putting forth healing objects and burying the weapons of war, efforts that are largely erased from the colonial records and from the contemporary imagination of the past. Ultimately, Native American theorizations of object orientation and human subjectivity challenge both our understanding of the colonial past and our current conversation surrounding gun violence.
