The orientational dependence of the third order nonlinear optical polarization density for degenerate optical interactions in zinc-blende semiconductors has been derived, corresponding to two-photon absorption and Kerr refraction. A specific emphasis is put on the role of the anisotropic property of the third order optical susceptibility in optical interactions. Significant modulations by the anisotropy on the induced polarization densities are demonstrated for situations of single- and two-beam irradiation. The reduced forms in the isotropic limit are discussed as well. Furthermore for two-beam irradiation in the isotropic limit, we have determined numerical factors of 2 and 2/3 for cross-modulations corresponding to parallel and orthogonal polarizations of the two waves, respectively, with respect to self-modulation.

The two-photon absorption coefficients (β) and the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities (χ(3)) of several semiconductor nanoparticles (CdS, CdxAg1–xS, and core–shell CdS/Ag2S) that are confined and stabilized by random and block ionomers have been measured by nonlinear transmission and degenerate four-wave mixing techniques using 21 picosecond laser pulses at near-infrared spectral region. The imaginary part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility that is related to the two-photon absorption coefficient was then calculated. The absorptive nonlinearity of the nanoparticles (2∼9 nm) was found to be dependent on the particle size, composition and wavelength, i.e., larger CdS particles exhibit higher two-photon absorption coefficients and the presence of Ag improves two-photon absorption of CdS nanoparticles. The obtained two-photon absorption coefficients of nanoparticles corrected for their volume fraction in solution are significantly greater that those of corresponding bulk semiconductors.

Two-photon optical nonlinear absorption has been studied in quantum dots of CdSxSe1-xgrown in borosilicate glass matrix by two-step annealing technique. Femtosecond laser and open aperture Z-scan technique has been used for measuring the third-order nonlinear two-photon absorption coefficient (β(3)). Only the third-order and not the fifth-order nonlinear effects are observed at low intensities (1.6–3.2 GW cm-2) of laser used in the present experiment. At such low intensities, the variation of β(3)is found to be almost intensity-independent. For a given annealing duration of the quantum dots, the value of β(3)is found to be higher for sulfur-rich samples as compared to that for selenium-rich samples. This is attributed to the presence of shallow traps formed due to sulfur vacancies in the sulfur-rich samples. Further, the value of β(3)increases with the increase in the size of quantum dots and the rate of increase of β(3)with the increase of average radius is found to be higher for sulfur-rich samples.

Mixed (FAPbI3)0.92(MAPbBr3)0.08 perovskite thin films exhibit strong nonlinear optical responses, rendering them promising candidates for applications in photonics and optical communications. In this work, we present a systematic study on the ultrafast third-order nonlinear optical processes in mixed perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) by exploring the generation of third harmonic radiation and giant two-photon absorption-based photoluminescence (PL) when excited by femtosecond laser pulses of a 1030 nm central wavelength. A comparative analysis of the coherent third harmonic generation in the thin-film-containing perovskite nanocrystals has shown a 40× enhancement of the third harmonic signal compared to the signal generated in the pure quartz substrate. The cubic dependence of the third-nonlinear optical response of the (FAPbI3)0.92(MAPbBr3)0.08 perovskites on the intensity of the driving radiation was identified using broadband 38 femtosecond driving pulses. The positive nonlinear refractive index (γ = +1.4 × 10−12 cm2·W−1) is found to play an important role in improving the phase-matching conditions of the interacting pulses by generating a strong third order harmonic. The giant two-photon absorption (TPA)-assisted PL peak was monitored and a blue shift of the PL was obtained in the higher intensity range of the laser pulses, with the absorption coefficient β estimated to be~+7.0 cm·MW−1 at a 1030 nm laser wavelength.
