The commercialization of research done by universities and research institutes is seen as a key element of entrepreneurship, justifying a better understanding of the entrepreneurial process within those institutions. Despite efforts in recent decades, there remains a widespread ignorance about who are the individuals with a greater vocation for research and marketing of knowledge. Focusing on a relatively unexplored context — the field of life sciences in a moderate innovator country, Portugal — this study adds new empirical evidence to the precedents of academic entrepreneurship. The results, based on 247 responses, evidence that entrepreneurship (including patent production, consultancy work and creation of start-up companies) is still very incipient. The econometric analysis of the “Index of entrepreneurial activity,” shows that: (1) the phenomenon of academic entrepreneurship is within everyone’s reach, but embraced by very few; and (2) academic entrepreneurship feeds on the exchange of knowledge and resources among universities and research institutes and their socio-economic environment. Thus, to increase academic entrepreneurship in life science in Portugal, the mechanisms to facilitate the interactions between universities and the business community must be strengthened, promoting the development of business clusters with the integration of the academic world, which will enable the transformation of knowledge into market products and services.

The key focus of this article is to outline for entrepreneurs the values that intermediaries can offer in achieving partnering/financing objectives. Entrepreneurs will gain insight on services offered by intermediaries, choices and selection of intermediaries as well as expectation for intermediaries to ensure best outcome.

Pens have gone dry and words have run out, highlighting the need for Industry-Academia collaboration. However, it is indeed deeply dismaying that very little progress has been made in “building the bridges” we have been advocating and promoting over the last few decades, when the necessity and urgency of innovative research leading to IP/Patent protection and technology licensing is recognised as a priority. Except for couple of pockets of excellence, there have been very few “box office” hits to write about. One example to quote is the Venture Centre at the NCL (National Chemical Laboratory, Pune) headed by Dr. V. Premnath. A few exceptional achievements in a relatively short time by this innovation/start up incubation centre are worth taking note of.

AbstractEvidence suggests that women in academia are hindered by conscious and unconscious biases, and often feel excluded from formal and informal opportunities for research collaboration. In addition to ensuring fairness and helping to redress gender imbalance in the academic workforce, increasing women’s access to collaboration could help scientific progress by drawing on more of the available human capital. Here, we test whether researchers tend to collaborate with same-gendered colleagues, using more stringent methods and a larger dataset than in past work. Our results reaffirm that researchers co-publish with colleagues of the same gender more often than expected by chance, and show that this ‘gender homophily’ is slightly stronger today than it was 10 years ago. Contrary to our expectations, we found no evidence that homophily is driven mostly by senior academics, and no evidence that homophily is stronger in fields where women are in the minority. Interestingly, journals with a high impact factor for their discipline tended to have comparatively low homophily, as predicted if mixed-gender teams produce better research. We discuss some potential causes of gender homophily in science.
