Intended for undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, engineering, and physics, this book by Dr. D'Alessandro is the first mathematician-written textbook on the subject of quantum control. Representative quantum control problems from various contexts are introduced with clarity and strictness. Emphasis is placed on the applications of Lie algebra and Lie group theory in quantum control.

AbstractAn effective approach to quantify entanglement of any bipartite systems is D-concurrence, which is important in quantum information science. In this paper, we present a direct method for experimental determination of the D-concurrence of an arbitrary bipartite pure state. To do this, we show that measurement of the D-concurrence of bipartite pure state can be conversed into the measurement performed on some observables so called generalized Gell-Mann operators. We first introduce the concept of D-concurrence for a bipartite system. Then we explain the method of measuring this entanglement measure for the pure state. Finally, for clarify of the subject, we give an example consisting of two parties A and B with dimensions 3.

Information use is an understudied area within information science thus strategies pertinent to using information remains understudied. However, research implicates strategically using information as a performance booster, especially within academic contexts. This paper reports on an ongoing research on information use strategies of graduate students as they attend to an identified academic task.L’utilisation et les stratégies pertinentes à l’utilisation de l’information demeurent un domaine sous-étudié en science de l’information. Cependant, la recherche implique l’utilisation stratégique de l’information comme stimulant du rendement, particulièrement en contexte scolaire. Cette communication porte sur une recherche en cours sur les stratégies d’utilisation de l’information des étudiants universitaires de 2e et 3e cycle lors d’une tâche scolaire prédéfinie.

This chapter reviews the literature that probed people’s decisions about whom to turn to when they need a confidant and discusses reasons for considering an alternative. It first provides a historical overview of research on the subject before analyzing how the claim that people will turn to those they are close to when they have important matters to discuss is linked to the ideas about the differences between strong and weak ties. It also cites three reasons to doubt the notion that people will turn to strong ties when seeking confidants as consistently as they say they do. The chapter concludes by explaining the rationale for studying the experiences of graduate students who were forced to make decisions about whom to talk to when they needed someone to talk to.

Environmental DNA (eDNA), i.e. DNA released in the environment by any living form, represents a formidable opportunity to gather high-throughput and standard information on the distribution or feeding habits of species. It has therefore great potential for applications in ecology and biodiversity management. However, this research field is fast-moving, involves different areas of expertise and currently lacks standard approaches, which calls for an up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring covers current methods based on eDNA, with a particular focus on “eDNA metabarcoding”. Intended for scientists and managers, it provides the background information to allow the design of sound experiments. It revisits all steps necessary to produce high-quality metabarcoding data such as sampling, metabarcode design, optimization of PCR and sequencing protocols, as well as analysis of large sequencing datasets. All these different steps are presented by discussing the potential and current challenges of eDNA-based approaches to infer parameters on biodiversity or ecological processes. The last chapters of this book review how DNA metabarcoding has been used so far to unravel novel patterns of diversity in space and time, to detect particular species, and to answer new ecological questions in various ecosystems and for various organisms. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring constitutes an essential reading for all graduate students, researchers and practitioners who do not have a strong background in molecular genetics and who are willing to use eDNA approaches in ecology and biomonitoring.
