An integrated stochastic model and algorithm for multi-product newsvendor problems

In this paper, a multi-product newsvendor problem is formulated as a random nonlinear integrated optimization model by taking into consideration the selling price, the producing and outsourcing quantities, and the nonlinear budget constraint. Different from the existing models, the demands of products depend on the prices, as well as being time-varying due to random market fluctuation. In addition, outsourcing strategy is adopted to deal with possible shortage caused by the limited capacity. Consequently, the constructed model is involved with joint optimization of the producing and outsourcing quantities, and the selling prices of all the products. For this model with continuous random demands, we first transform it into a nonlinear programming problem by expectation method. Then, an efficient algorithm, called the feasible-direction-based spectral conjugate gradient algorithm, is developed to find a robust solution of the model. By case study and sensitivity analysis, some interesting conclusions are drawn as follows: (a) Budget is a critical constraint for optimizing the decision-making of the retailer, and there exist different threshold values of the budget for the substitute and complementarity scenarios. (b) The price sensitivity matrix seriously affects the maximal expected profit mainly through affecting the optimal outsourcing quantity.

Abstract In Egypt, intersections are encountering congestion and safety problems. Midblock U-turns have been used for solving these problems. The midblock U-turn increased the accidents, besides, it has limited capacity. In the last decade, elevated U-turns have been applied to solve these problems. The extensive use of elevated U-turns has not been accompanied by any research for studying the performance of elevated U-turns with respect to safety and economy. This paper developed a simple framework for comparing elevated and traditional midblock U-turns in terms of safety and economy. The study applied a case study to evaluate the two alternatives using a benefit-cost analysis technique. Although the results show the high cost of the elevated U-turns, it has been demonstrated to be the best solution since they provide the greater traffic capacity and lower accident rates. Accident number reported at elevated U-turns was 59 % less than the number associated with traditional U-turns.

Tempeh industry is a typical household business that requires little investment and has few workers. Efficient marketing could optimize the income of tempeh’s producers. This research aims to understand the marketing efficiency and factors that affect the purchasing margin of tempeh in selected areas. This research will study the value of farmer’s share and the marketing margin of tempeh to evaluate the commerce efficiency. The sampels are the producers and sellers. 58 tempeh’s producers are selected by the simple random sampling method. The sellers, on the other hand, are chosen using the snowball sampling, a technique that tracks down the marketing process. The variable studied in the  research are as follows: 1) producer’s tempeh’s selling cost, 2) tempeh’s selling price on commercial institution, 3) marketing cost, 4) total amount of sold products, 5) numbers of  marketing  institution  where the  product  passes,  6)  the  marketing margin, 7) the farmer’s share, and 8) marketing efficiency. The research finds three marketing channels on the case study areas. The first channel is from the producers to tempeh. The second channel is form producers to retailers to consumers. The third channel is from producers to peddlers to consumers. By using the farmer’s share, the calculation of commerce efficiency. The leading cause is the lack of middlemen. Moreover, the double regression analysis show the retailers tempeh selling cost (X4) to be the dominant factor in the marketing margin of tempeh.

The planning and operation of urban buses depend heavily on the time-varying origin-destination (OD) matrix for bus passengers. In most cities, however, only boarding information is recorded, while the alighting information is not available. This paper proposes a novel method to predict the destination of a single bus passenger based on bus smartcard data, metro smartcard data, and global positioning system (GPS) bus data. First, the attractiveness of each bus stop in a bus line was evaluated, considering the attractiveness of nearby metro stations. Then, the exploration and preferential return (EPR) model was employed to estimate the probability of a bus stop to be the alighting stop, i.e., the destination, of a passenger. The estimation result was obtained through a simulation based on the Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm. The effectiveness of our method was proved through a case study on the bus network in Shenzhen, China.
