The information management is a crucial mission for a virtual industry in such a competitive market environment. The typical characteristic of information management is distribution, autonomy and co-operation. Based on an on-going ESPRIT project (X-CITTIC), The author presents a distributed information management architecture for production planning and control in a virtual enterprises of semiconductor manufacturing. Object technologies are widely used in its design and implementation. A detailed structure of the components in the architecture, called information managers, is also suggested and introduced. Each information manager has three elements: a data object server, a database and a group of meta-objects. The information management can provide not only basic services (e.g. read and write) but also advanced services (e.g. notification, security control, subscription and data sending). Finally the present X-CITTIC information management system is detailed introduced.

Recent years have seen an explosion in the investment into and valuation of mobile spatial applications. With multiple applications currently valued at well over one billion U.S. dollars, mobile spatial applications and the data they generate have come to play an increasingly significant role in the function of late capitalism. Empirically based upon a series of interviews conducted with mobile application designers and developers, this article details the creation of a digital commodity termed ‘location.’ ‘Location’ is developed through three discursive poles: Its storing of space and time as digital data object manipulable by code, its spatial and temporal immediacy, and its ability to ‘add value’ or ‘tell a story’ to both end-users and marketers. As a commodity it represents the sum total of targeted marking information, including credit profiles, purchase history, and a host of other information available through data mining or sensor information, combined with temporal immediacy, physical location, and user intent. ‘Location’ is demonstrated to exist as a commodity from its very inception and, as such, to be a key means through which everyday life is further entangled with processes of capitalist exploitation.

In this paper, data field is proposed to group data objects via simulating their mutual interactions and opposite movements for hierarchical clustering. Enlightened by the field in physical space, data field to simulate nuclear field is presented to illuminate the interaction between objects in data space. In the data field, the self-organized process of equipotential lines on many data objects discovers their hierarchical clustering-characteristics. During the clustering process, a random sample is first generated to optimize the impact factor. The masses of data objects are then estimated to select core data object with nonzero masses. Taking the core data objects as the initial clusters, the clusters are iteratively merged hierarchy by hierarchy with good performance. The results of a case study show that the data field is capable of hierarchical clustering on objects varying size, shape or granularity without user-specified parameters, as well as considering the object features inside the clusters and removing the outliers from noisy data. The comparisons illustrate that the data field clustering performs better than K-means, BIRCH, CURE, and CHAMELEON.

Several initial center selection algorithms are proposed in the literature for numerical data, but the values of the categorical data are unordered so, these methods are not applicable to a categorical data set. This article investigates the initial center selection process for the categorical data and after that present a new support based initial center selection algorithm. The proposed algorithm measures the weight of unique data points of an attribute with the help of support and then integrates these weights along the rows, to get the support of every row. Further, a data object having the largest support is chosen as an initial center followed by finding other centers that are at the greatest distance from the initially selected center. The quality of the proposed algorithm is compared with the random initial center selection method, Cao's method, Wu method and the method introduced by Khan and Ahmad. Experimental analysis on real data sets shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The world is increasingly awash in more and more unstructured data. Object-based data de-duplication is the current most advanced method and is the effective solution for detecting duplicate data. We developed an energy saving policy for conventional disk based RAID systems. According to the characteristics of object-based data de-duplication, we introduce object layout strategies for unstructured data applications; disk accesses are concentrated in a part of the disks in a long time which is conducive to scheduling other disks into standby or shutdown mode. Our proposed methods reduce energy consumption of de-duplication storage system.

With Pro/Toolkit of Pro/E and ADO(ActiveX Data Object) database technology, part parametric CAD system is developed and an successful instance is introduced in the paper. In the CAD system, interface between Pro/E and VC++6.0 is created correctly using Pro / Toolkit and user interface for part parametric designing can be achieved by means of dll( dll dynamic link) library built in VC++6.0 .Meanwhile ADO database is applied in the CAD system to manage all part parameters and thus part revising and updating can be realized quickly. The developing method in the CAD system not only is applicable to typical mechanical part designing but also be helpful to establishing standard part library.
