The aim of this research was the reconstruction of the system of categories through which Russians perceive the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Europe, and the world as a whole; to study the implicit model of the geopolitical space; to analyze the stereotypes in the perception of different countries and the superposition of mental geopolitical representations onto the geographic map. The techniques of psychosemantics by Petrenko, originating in the semantic differential of Osgood and Kelly's “repertory grids,” were used as working tools. Multidimensional semantic spaces act as operational models of the structures of consciousness, and the positions of countries in multidimensional space reflect the geopolitical stereotypes of respondents about these countries. Because of the transformation of geopolitical reality representations in mass consciousness, the commonly used classification of countries as socialist, capitalist, and developing is being replaced by other structures. Four invariant factors of the countries' descriptions were identified. They are connected with Economic and Political Well-being, Military Might, Friendliness toward Russia, and Spirituality and the Level of Culture. It seems that the structure has not been explained in adequate detail and is not clearly realized by the individuals. There is an interrelationship between the democratic political structure of a country and its prosperity in the political mentality of Russian respondents. Russian public consciousness painfully strives for a new geopolitical identity and place in the commonwealth of states. It also signifies the country's interest and orientation toward the East in the search for geopolitical partners. The construct system of geopolitical perception also depends on the region of perception.

Chapter 4 reviews ‘behavioural welfare economics’—the approach to normative analysis that is favoured by most behavioural economists. This approach assumes that people have context-independent ‘true’ or ‘latent’ preferences which, because of psychologically-induced errors, are not always revealed in actual choices. Behavioural welfare economics aims to reconstruct latent preferences by identifying and removing the effects of error on decisions, and to design policies to satisfy those preferences. Its implicit model of human agency is of an ‘inner rational agent’ that interacts with the world through an imperfect psychological ‘shell’. I argue that there is no satisfactory evidence to support this model, and no credible psychological foundation for it. Since the concept of true preference has no empirical content, the idea that such preferences can be reconstructed is a mirage. Normative economics needs to be more radical in giving up rationality assumptions.

For some special tailrace tunnels in the hydropower stations, including the changing top-altitude tailrace tunnel and the tailrace tunnel with downstream reused flat-ceiling diversion tunnel, during normal operation and hydraulic transients, the flow patterns inside are relatively complex mainly including the free-surface pressurized flow and partial free flow if the tail water level is lower than the top elevation of tunnel’s outlet. These complex flow patterns have obvious effect on system’s stability, and can not be simulated accurately by the traditional models. Therefore, a characteristic implicit model is introduced to simulate these complex flow patterns for further stability analysis. In some special cases, the characteristic implicit model also fails to completely simulate the mixed free-surface pressurized flow in the flat-ceiling tailrace tunnel. A new method is presented based on both experimental research and numerical simulation, and then, system’s stability is analyzed by compared with traditional ordinary boundary condition. The results indicate that, with different simulation models for the complex water flow in the tailrace tunnel, system’s dynamic characteristic can be actually revealed with the consideration of the effect of complex flow patterns in the tailrace tunnel on system’s stability and regulation performance.

Relative permeability is an important magnetic characteristic for ferrofluid to exhibit its magnetized potential during the magnetization process. To understand above physical property varying with field intensity, a popular analytic model, based on Langevin theory, has been usually considered and widely used. Unfortunately, an implicit model, derived from above hypothesis, for solving the instantaneous magnetization of ferro-particle will be carried out unless the determination of saturated magnetization should be conducted in advance. Just for the study dealing with magnetic property of testing ferro-sample is concerned, the previous acquisition of magnetization curve is impossible and unpractical without the precise measurement of magnetization-degree. On the other hand, required experimental expense is still so costly that it seems to be unaffordable for general laboratory. Thus a self-designed electromagnetic mechanism with special facility of smaller size, economical cost and efficient operation to quantify the reduced gravity of ferro-sample attracts our interest and is set up in this study. Meantime, an auxiliary numerical method, Newton interpolatory divided-difference formulas in trapezoidal rule, involved in this study successfully avoids the essentiality of saturated magnetization determined previously, and which also provides a numerical approximation through the weight loss of ferrofluid experienced by the designed experimental system. As compared with the result measured by VSM (vibration sample magnetometer) method, the estimated profile shows an excellent agreement except the extraordinary outcome occurring at B=6 mT, where a drastic increase of relative permeability will be evaluated due to the faster magnetization starts.

This study examined the validity of the Implicit Model of Illness Questionnaire (IMIQ - Schiaffino & Cea, 1995) when used with Latino college students (n = 156; 34% male, 66% female) who are at-risk for developing diabetes due to family history of this disease. An exploratory principal-axis factor analysis yielded four significant factors – curability, personal responsibility, symptom variability/seriousness, and personal attributions – which accounted for 35% of variance and reflected a psychosocial-biomedical common sense perspective of diabetes. Factor-based analyses revealed differences in diabetes illness beliefs based on students’ age, generational status, acculturation orientation, and disease experience of the afflicted relative.
