In this paper a case study about concrete strength assessment of bridge structure experiencing fire is discussed. Assessment methods include activities of visual inspection, concrete testing by Hammer Test, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test, and Core Test. Then, test results are compared with the requirement of RSNI T-12-2004. Test results show that surface concrete at the location of fire deteriorates so that its quality is decreased into the category of Very Poor with ultrasonic pulse velocity ranges between 1,14 – 1,74 km/s. From test results also it can be known that concrete compressive strength of inner part of bridge pier ranges about 267 – 274 kg/cm2 and concrete compressive strength of beam and plate experiencing fire directly is about 173 kg/cm2 and 159 kg/cm2. It can be concluded that surface concrete strength at the location of fire does not meet the requirement of RSNI T-12-2004. So, repair on surface concrete of pier, beam, and plate at the location of fire is required.

Abstract The STEADI Options trial uses a randomized, controlled-trial design to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the STEADI Initiative . Beginning March, 2020, we will randomize 3,000 adults ≥ 65 years of age at risk for falls seen in an Emory Clinic primary care practice to: (1) full STEADI; (2) a STEADI-derived gait, balance, and strength assessment with physical therapy referrals; (3) a STEADI-derived medication review and management; or (4) usual care. This presentation will discuss decisions made by the study team to facilitate implementation of STEADI including electronically conducting screening prior to the date of encounter, the use of dedicated nursing staff to conduct assessments, implementation of strength, balance, orthostatic hypotension, and vision testing, methods to facilitate medication review, and communication of assessment information to providers. The results from this study will be used to estimate the impact of STEADI on falls, service utilization, and costs over one year.

Background: The restoration of quadriceps strength after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is critical to restore optimal patient function and reduce the incidence of secondary ACL injury. Strength is typically quantified during return to sport assessments, by comparing the strength in the involved limb to that of the uninvolved limb. A limb symmetry index (LSI) is calculated and used to determine if any residual strength deficits persist. Recent evidence demonstrates that the uninvolved limb may lose strength during ACLR recovery and suggests that pre-operative uninvolved limb strength values may offer a better representation and more stringent indicator of strength recovery after ACLR. However, this body of literature is limited and no studies have specifically evaluated this occurrence within youth athletes. Purpose: To evaluate the change in strength in the uninvolved limb from pre-operative to 6 months post-ACLR, and assess the effect of pre-operative strength comparison on 6-month post-op LSI. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of pediatric patients (≤18 years) undergoing primary ACLR from 1/2018-1/2020 without concomitant multi-ligamentous reconstruction was conducted. Isokinetic peak torque values for the uninvolved and involved quadriceps were extracted at pre-operative (uninvolved only) and 6 months post-operative. Strength changes were analyzed using paired-samples t-test. Results: Complete data was available for a total of 17 subjects (mean age 15.1±1.7, 53% female). Pre-operative strength assessment was performed a mean of 11.5 days (range 1-26) prior to surgery. The mean 6-month post-operative assessment occurred at 177 days (range 127-246). The uninvolved limb was significantly stronger (p<0.001) at 6 months compared to preoperatively, with a mean improvement of 12.1ft/lbs (95%CI 18.3 – 7.2) with a change from 82.4ft/lbs to 95.1 ft/lbs. The LSI was calculated using both pre-operative and 6-month post-operative uninvolved limb values and demonstrated substantially lower LSI values when using concurrent 6-month data (LSIpre 91.3% vs LSI6M 76.9%). Conclusions: Among this sample, the uninvolved limb got stronger during post-ACLR recovery and comparison to concurrently assessed strength values led to a more stringent determination of LSI. Differences in rehabilitation programming, adolescent physiology, and pre-injury training patterns may explain why these results differ than those found in older cohorts.

Abstract Introduction Treatment of older adult hip fracture patients can be challenging and requires early postoperative mobilisation to prevent complications. Simple clinical tools to predict mobilisation/weight-bearing difficulties after hip fracture surgery are scarcely available and analysis of handgrip strength could be a feasible approach. In the present study, we hypothesised that patients with reduced handgrip strength show incapability to follow postoperative weight-bearing instructions. Materials and methods Eighty-four patients aged ≥ 65 years with a proximal femur fracture (trochanteric, n = 45 or femoral neck, n = 39), who were admitted to a certified orthogeriatric center, were consecutively enrolled in a prospective study design. Five days after surgery (intramedullary nailing or arthroplasty), a standardised assessment of handgrip strength and a gait analysis (via insole forcesensors) was performed. Results Handgrip strength showed positive correlation with average peak force during gait on the affected limb (0.259), postoperative Parker Mobility Score (0.287) and Barthel Index (0.306). Only slight positive correlation was observed with gait speed (0.157). These results were congruent with multivariate regression analysis. Conclusion Assessment of handgrip strength is a simple and reliable tool for early prediction of postoperative mobilisation complications like the inability to follow weight-bearing instructions in older hip fracture patients. Follow-up studies should evaluate if these findings also match with other fracture types and result in personalised adjustment of current aftercare patterns. In addition, efforts should be made to combine objectively collected data as handgrip strength or gait speed in a prediction model for long-term outcome of orthogeriatric patients.

To estimate postgrouting rock mass strength growth is important for engineering design. In this paper, using self-developed indoor pressure-grouting devices, 19 groups of test cubic blocks were made of the different water cement ratio grouting into the broken rock of three kinds of particle sizes. The shear strength parameters of each group under different conditions were tested. Then this paper presents a quantitative calculation method for predicting the strength growth of grouted broken rock. Relational equations were developed to investigate the relationship between the growth rates of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), absolute value of uniaxial tensile strength (AUTS), internal friction angle, and cohesion for post- to pregrouting broken rock based on Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. From previous test data, the empirical equation between the growth rate of UCS and the ratio of the initial rock mass UCS to the grout concretion UCS has been determined. The equations of the growth rates of the internal friction coefficient and UCS for grouting broken rock with rock mass rating (RMR) and its increment have been established. The calculated results are consistent with the experimental results. These observations are important for engineered design of grouting reinforcement for broken rock mass.

Submarine pipeline failures usually occur at free span part, and free spanning pipeline is easily induced vibration by vortex, which accelerates the fatigue failure of pipe. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the strength of free spanning pipeline at regular intervals. In this paper, considering the effects of VIV, resonance assessment and yield strength assessment as well as buckling strength assessment are enumerated. And an illustration is calculated to verify the reliability of assessment method. This research may provide a guide for safety design, installation and maintenance of submarine pipeline.
