Cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are rare and their diagnosis and treatment can be difficult. This report details 7 patients who had histologically proven serous cystadenoma4, mucinous cystadenoma2 and cystadeno carcinoma1. Computed tomography and sonography allowed excellent preoperative assessment but to attempt a distinction between the histological variants may be hazardous. Two tumours were only autopsy findings and 5 patients underwent laparotomy. It is confirmed that potentially malignant mucinous cystadenomas and cytadenocarcinomas should be resected whenever possible; serous cystadenomas are always benign and should therefore be resected only when the diagnosis is doubtful or if they cause symptoms.

Serous cystadenomas are the most common cystic neoplasms of the pancreas. They may occur solely or coexist with other neoplasms. A 10 cm mass involving the body of the pancreas was observed in the computed tomography of a 61-year-old man with a previous history of bladder and prostate carcinoma. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the mass demonstrated multiple small cysts associated with a central calcified scar. A distal pancreatectomy was performed. Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of serous microcystic adenoma. This is the first report of a serous cystadenoma of the pancreas with two metachronous neoplasms. This feature should be kept in mind during the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with serous cystadenoma.

Introduction: Ovarian cancer is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the world. This study was conducted with the aim to find out different histological types of ovarian tumours reported at B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH), Chitwan, Nepal. Methods: This was a retrospective study carried out at the Department of Pathology of BPKMCH from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. This study included the patients who were operated at BPKMCH or referred cases from elsewhere, but the specimen was processed and reported at BPKMCH. All the data were retrieved and analyzed from the records of Pathology Department. Results: Altogether 87 cases of ovarian tumours were reported during the study period. Out of which, 31 cases were benign ovarian tumours whereas 56 cases were malignant ovarian tumours. Both benign and malignant ovarian tumours were most common in age group 41 to 50 years of age. Among benign ovarian tumours, 12 cases were serous cystadenoma, 7 cases mucinous cystadenoma, 6 cases mature cystic teratoma, 2 cases serous cyst adenofibroma, 2 cases benign Brenner tumour and 2 endometroid cystadenoma. Among malignant ovarian tumours, 33 cases were serous cystadenocarcinoma, 11 cases mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, 2 cases immature teratoma, 3 cases were malignant sex cord stromal tumours (granulosa cell tumour), 2 cases dysgerminoma, 1 case yolk sac tumour, 1 case endometroid carcinoma and 3 cases were metastatic adenocarcinoma. Conclusion: Surface epithelial tumours were most common ovarian tumours in this study. Serous cystadenomas were most common benign ovarian tumours whereas serous cystadenocarcinomas were the most common malignant ovarian tumours.

Mucinous cystadenomas of the liver are rare cystic neoplasms, often mistaken for simple cysts or hydatid cysts of the liver. They are generally benign tumors, often discovered incidentally on imaging or during independent surgeries. Despite their tendency to grow slowly, mucinous cystadenomas of the liver can reach symptomatic dimensions. And given their potential for malignant transformation into mucinous cystadenocarcinomas, a misdiagnosis can have serious secondary consequences. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with chronic right hypochondrium pain in whom a mucinous cystadenoma of the liver was accidentally discovered during surgery for hepatic hydatid cyst at the general surgery department at the ARRAZI Hospital - UHC Mohammed VI in Marrakech, Morocco.

Background: Serous cystadenomas of pancreas are rare benign epithelial neoplasms, which predominantly occur in the pancreatic body and tail of elderly females. Majority of these tumors have microcystic appearance. Macrocystic and solid variants have also been described. A number of more aggressive cystic pancreatic lesions are included in the differential diagnosis. Distinction from such lesions is important for optimal management. Objective: Our aim was to study the clinical and histological features of serous cystadenomas which would be helpful in making their correct diagnosis and understanding their behavior. Methods: We reviewed 23 cases of serous cystadenomas diagnosed in our institution between January 2001 and June 2018. Results: Mean age at presentation was 53.43 years. Female to male ratio was 4.75:1. Over half (56.5%) of the cases were diagnosed incidentally. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom. Body and tail (either alone or in combination) were the most common locations. Tumor size ranged from 2 to 16 cm. Central scar was seen in 43.4% cases. Two cases were unilocular (macrocystic). Microscopically, all cases showed simple cuboidal to flattened epithelium with round, uniform nuclei, and glycogen-rich clear cytoplasm. Focal micropapillae formation was seen in eight cases (34.7%). Surgical resection was performed in 82.6% cases. Recurrence occurred in only one single case. Conclusion: Pancreatic serous cystadenomas are benign neoplasms with excellent prognosis. The tumors showed typical morphological features in all cases. Surgical resection was performed in the majority of cases in our study owing to lack of optimal and complete radiological workup pre-operatively and the concern for not missing and adequately treating pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms.

Abstract Background Texture analysis of medical images has been reported to be a reliable method for differential diagnosis of neoplasms. This study was to investigate the performance of textural features and the combined performance of textural features and morphological characteristics in the differential diagnosis of pancreatic serous and mucinous cystadenomas. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed 59 patients with pancreatic serous cystadenoma and 32 patients with pancreatic mucinous cystadenoma at our hospital. A three-dimensional region of interest (ROI) around the margin of the lesion was drawn manually in the CT images of each patient, and textural parameters were retrieved from the ROI. Textural features were extracted using the LifeX software. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was applied to select the textural features. The differential diagnostic capabilities of morphological features, textural features, and their combination were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used as the main indicator. Diagnostic accuracy based on the AUC values is defined as follows: 0.9–1.0, excellent; 0.8–0.9, good; 0.7–0.8, moderate; 0.6–0.7, fair; 0.5–0.6, poor. Results. In the differential diagnosis of pancreatic serous and mucinous cystadenomas, the combination of morphological characteristics and textural features (AUC 0.893, 95% CI 0.816-0.970) is better than morphological characteristics (AUC 0.783, 95% CI 0.665-0.900) or textural features (AUC 0.777, 95% CI 0.673-0.880) alone. Conclusions. In conclusion, our preliminary results highlighted the potential of CT texture analysis in discriminating pancreatic serous cystadenoma from mucinous cystadenoma. Furthermore, the combination of morphological characteristics and textural features can significantly improve the diagnostic performance, which may provide a reliable method to select patients with indication for surgical intervention in consideration of the different treatment principles of the two diseases.

Background: Benign ovarian tumors are a common reason for consultation and intervention in gynecology. The objective of this was to describe the clinical, ultrasonographic, histological and therapeutic aspects of benign ovarian tumors in the department.Methods: This is a retrospective and descriptive study of three years and six months from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019, which focused on the records of women-operated during this period of benign ovarian tumors.Results: The incidence of benign ovarian tumors was 12.58%. The circumstances of discovery were dominated by disorders of the menstrual cycle (35.05%) followed by infertility (20.78%), the sensation of a pelvic mass (19.48%), and pelvic pain. (15.58%). The ultrasound report was in favor of a serous cyst in 74% of cases, a mucoid cyst in 14% of cases, a 9% dermoid cyst, and a 3% endometriotic cyst. Histology revealed serous cystadenoma in 54% of cases, mucinous cystadenoma in 13% of cases, mature poly tissue teratoma in 7% of cases, and endometrial cyst in 3% of cases. Cystectomy was the most performed surgical procedure (71%).Conclusions: Benign ovarian tumors are common in our practice. The most common histological forms were serous and mucinous cystadenomas. Conservative treatment has been practiced in the majority of cases.
