Nearly fully dense carbides of zirconium, hafnium, and tantalum were obtained by pressureless sintering at 1950°C with the addition of 5–20 vol% of MoSi2. Increasing the amount of sintering aid, the final density increased too, thanks to the formation of small amounts of liquid phase constituted by M-Mo-Si-O-C, where M is either Zr, Hf, or Ta. The matrices of the composites obtained with the standard procedure showed faceted squared grains; when an ultrasonication step was introduced in the powder treatment, the grains were more rounded and no exaggerated grains growth occurred. Other secondary phases observed in the microstructure were SiC and mixed silicides of the transition metals. Among the three carbides prepared by pressurless sintering, TaC-based composites had the highest mechanical properties at room temperature (strength 590 MPa, Young's modulus 480 GPa, toughness 3.8 MPa·m1/2). HfC-based materials showed the highest sinterability (in terms of final density versus amount of sintering aid) and the highest high-temperature strength (300 MPa at 1500  °C).

ZrC-based composites were produced by pressureless sintering thanks to the addition of MoSi2 as sintering aid. After preliminary tests, a baseline ZrC material and two mixed ZrC–HfC and ZrC–ZrB2 composites with 20 vol% MoSi2 were densified at 1900 to 1950 °C reaching final relative densities of 96%–98%. Mean particle size of the dense bodies ranged from 5 to 9 μm. Secondary phases were found to form during sintering, such as SiC and Zr–Mo–Si-based compounds. Room-temperature mechanical properties were in the range of the values reported in the literature for similar materials densified by pressure-assisted techniques. The flexural strength was tested at room temperature, 1200 and 1500 °C.

ABSTRACTThe Si3N4 ceramics(91wt%Si3N4+5wt%Y2O3+4wt%Al2O3) of room temperature strength 620--760 MPa and fracture toughness 7 MPa-m½ were prepared by microwave sintering and their microstructure and mechanical properties were studied.The experiment results show that the higher N2 pressure (>4atm) is very necessary for microwave sintering of Si3N4 ceramics; microwave sintering can greatly decrease the sintering temperature to 1500* C, and increase the transformation rate of α to β-Si3N4,and reduce the total sintering time to about 1 hour. The mechanical properties of the Si3N4 ceramics sintered by microwave are better than that by conventional pressureless sintering.

The fire-resistant hot-rolled H-beam steel is the newly developed structure material. The development situation of the fire-resistant H-beam steel is briefly introduced. The chemical composition, microstructure, room temperature and high temperature mechanical properties and weldability of several batches of the developed domestic fire-resistant hot-rolled H-beam steels are comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the newly developed hot-rolled fire-resistant H-beam steel has very high room temperature strength, certain high temperature strength, good welding performance, but the toughness needs to be further improved. The performance of web and flange of H-beam steel has large gap.

ZrB2-SiC-B4C is sintered at 1700°C by spark plasma sintering process. The effect of B4C content on the mechanical properties and microstructure of ZrB2-SiC based ceramics is studied. The results show that, with the content of B4C increases, the relative density and room-temperature strength decrease in the ZrB2-SiC-B4C composite. The fracture toughness rises at first and then falls down. The high temperature strength increases.

Observation on the effect of adding titanium oxide (TiO2) and magnesium oxide (MgO) on the sintering of α-alumina (Al2O3) has been performed. In this study, technical alumina used as basic material in which the sample is formed by the pressureless sintering/cold press and sintered at 1500°C which is lower than alumina sintering temperature at 1700°C. Elemental analysis, observation of microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness and density measurements were carried out to determine the physical and mechanical properties of alumina. The results indicate a change in the microstructure where the content of the platelet structure are much more than the equilateral structure. At sintering temperature of 1500°C, neck growth occurs at ceramics grain, supported by the results of the density test which indicate perfect compaction has occurred in this process.

Ni-Cr-Co type Nickel-based super alloy Inconel 740H was studied. The effect of Nb, Al and Ti on the equilibrium of this alloy was analyzed by JMatPro software. The amount of Ti and Nb should be controlled by 1.50wt.%, and meanwhile, Al should be 1.0-2.0wt.%. If Mo and W were added the amount of Mo should be in the range of 1.0-2.0wt. %, and W should be about 1.0wt.%. Based on these results, three types of new alloys were designed, which contain Ni-Cr-Co-Mo type (1#), Ni-Cr-Co-W type (2#) and Ni-Cr-Co-Mo-W type (3#). Compared with the Ni-Cr-Co type Inconel 740H alloy, the room temperature strength, high temperature strength and high temperature durable performance of the three new alloys improved, which can provide the evidence and reference to optimize the chemical composition of Inconel 740H alloy, i.e., adding 1.50wt.% Mo and 1.0wt.% W individually or together.

ABSTRACTA homogeneous mixture of Y2O3, CeO2 and MgO with a final weight ratio of 3:1: 2 was prepared by the alkoxide method. The powder mixture was then added into Si3N4 powder in amounts ranging from 4 to 12 wt%, andconsolidated by hot-pressing. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were determined and compared to those of materials prepared by the conventional route of mixing the oxide powders as sintering aids individually in essentially same composition. The β-fraction (modification ratio) in same composition was higher in thesintered bodies made through the alkoxide method than those made through the conventional one. The room temperature flexural strength was maximized with 6wt% addition of the alkoxide derived oxide, whereas, 12wt% addition of the total oxide was required to maximize the strength by conventional processing.

ABSTRACTIn recent years, interest in high temperature aluminum alloys has increased. However, nearly all the data available is for simple extrusions. This paper looks at the properties of sheet made from a rapidly solidified Al-10Fe-2.5V-2Si alloy. The sheet is made by direct forging followed by hot rolling, this is readily scalable, so allowing the production of large sheet. The room temperature strength and fracture toughness of the sheet are comparable to those of 2014-T6. The high temperature strength, specific stiffness and corrosion resistance are excellent. Recently, improved thermomechanical processing and new alloys have allowed higher strengths and fracture toughness values to be obtained.

Studies have been conducted as to the effect of Cu, Mn, Fe concentration changes in Al-Cu-Mn-Fe-Ti alloy, the conditions of thermal and deformational treatment of ingots and extruded rods 40 mm in diameter on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties. It has been determined that changing Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn-0.17Fe-0.15Ti alloy to Al-6.5Cu-0.7Mn-0.11Fe-0.15Ti causes an increase in the strength characteristics of extruded rods at the room temperature both after molding and in tempered and aged conditions, irrespective of the conditions of thermal treatment of the initial ingot (low-temperature annealing 420 °С for 2 h, or high-temperature annealing at 530 °С for 12 h). Increasing the extruding temperature from 330 to 480 °С, along with increasing Cu, Mn and decreasing Fe in the alloy Al-Cu-Mn-Ti, is accompanied by the increased level of ultimate strength in a quenched condition by 25% to 410 MPa, irrespective of the annealing conditions of the original ingot. An opportunity to apply the Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn-0.17Fe-0.15Ti alloy with low-temperature annealing at 420 °С for 2 h and the molding temperature of 330 °С has been found to produce rods where, in the condition of full thermal treatment (tempering at 535 °С + aging at 200 °С for 8 hours), a structure is formed that ensures satisfactory characteristics of high temperature strength by resisting to fracture for more than 100 hours at 300 °С and 70 MPa.
