Shunt active power filters are nowadays used for mitigation of harmonic currents from nonlinear loads. Current and voltage harmonics have negative effects on the operation of the electric power system. Thus, a great attention is focused on harmonic generation and control. Several standards have introduced limits on current harmonics injected into the power system and on voltage harmonics at the system busbars. The paper proposes a switching strategy for a four-switch converter as used in conventional six-switch converters. The voltage source converter is controlled by a unique space-vector modulation strategy proposed. Here is presented an analytical solution for a proposed active power filter topology, simulation, and experiments results proving the proposed strategy correctness and its characteristics.

The quality of power nowadays is of great concern due to increasing demand of supply and energy resources are limited, another cause is increasing penetration of nonlinear loads in the power system. In order to overcome energy supply challenges, the focus of technologists is shifting to the renewable energy side such as the wind and solar energy and so on. As such, mitigating effect of nonlinear loads have become ever important as well. In this context, various techniques have been used by researchers in past decades. Shunt active power filter (APF) have long been used to mitigate current harmonics from fixed wind turbine generator (WTG). In this study shunt APF has been applied with variable speed WTG using synchronous reference frame (SRF) for the extraction of compensation signal for APF. Gate driver signals are generated from Bang-Bang Controller (Hysteresis Band Current Controller HBCC). A MATLAB/SIMULINK based Model have been developed. The Simulation results show decreased THD levels of the system and clearly suggest the effectiveness of Shunt APF in meeting the IEEE-519 standard recommendation for harmonic levels in WTG.

In this paper, three-phase, four-wire shunt active power filter (SAPF) is utilized to mitigate system harmonics of distorted voltage source for unbalanced and nonlinear loads. Basically, the source voltage should be pure sinusoidal waveform to get a good mitigation of source current harmonics. In this under study system, the source voltage is assumed to be harmonic distortion non-sinusoidal voltage source. The phase locked loop (PLL) control circuit is wielded for extracting the fundamental component of the distorted source voltage to use it as an input signal to the SAPF control. Another input signal to the SAPF is the distorted load current. The SAPF control system uses (p-q) theory to calculate the optimum instantaneous current to be injected by the SAPF to mitigate the source current harmonics even the source voltage is harmonic distorted. MATLAB/SIMULINK software package is utilized to simulate the system under study. The effect of SAPF is tested when it’s used with and without the PLL control circuit. The simulation results show that, the THD of source current when using the PLL control circuit is improved to comply with the harmonic limits given in the IEEE 519-1992 and IEC 61000-4-7 standards.

Nowadays, the use of power converters to control active and reactive power in AC–AC grid-connected systems has increased. With respect to indirect AC–AC converters, the tendency is to enable the back-to-back (BTB) voltage source converter (VSC) as an active power filter (APF) to compensate current harmonics. Most of the reported works use the BTB-VSC as an auxiliary topology that, combined with other topologies, is capable of active power regulation, reactive power compensation and current harmonic filtering. With the analysis presented in this work, the framework of the dynamics associated with the control loops is established and it is demonstrated that BTB-VSC can perform the three tasks for which, in the reviewed literature, at least two different topologies are reported. The proposed analysis works to support the performance criteria of the BTB-VSC when it executes the three control actions simultaneously and the total current harmonic distortion is reduced from 27.21% to 6.16% with the selected control strategy.

Shunt active power filter (SAPF) has now become a well-known sophisticated technology to overcome current harmonics and reactive power compensation issues. In this paper a technical review of various control strategies for operation of SAPF has been presented. Control strategies such as reference current generation by time domain, frequency domain and soft computing approaches; voltage control for dc link voltage regulation and current control for generating switching patterns for voltage source inverter has been discussed. This paper aims to provide a broad understanding on SAPFs for various research and engineering applications.

“The increased penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is inspiring the entire design of conventional electrical power system. “A Microgrid (MG) includes distributed generation, loads, energy storage, and a control system that is competent of working in grid-connected mode and/or islanded mode. Power quality (PQ) problems are one of the major technical challenges in MG power system. To get better PQ of energy supply, it is essential to analyze the harmonics distortion of the system. Moreover, harmonic distortion in a MG networks has significantly reduced PQ, which affects the stability of the system. In order to diminish the harmonics, shunt active power filter (SAPF) has been extensively useful and it is verified to be the best solution to current harmonics. The present paper proposes the mitigation of harmonics of a MG system using shunt active power filter (SAPF). However, the SAPF is employed for reimbursing the harmonics concurrently in the distribution system. The proposed model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink and the result obtained validates the superiority of proposed technique over others in terms of harmonics elimination.”

Along with the access of nonlinear load and the development of electric power system, the harmonic pollution in power system is deteriorating. Harmonic not only affects the reliability, safety and economic operation of power system but also poses potential risks to power users. An active power filter with TMS320F2812 DSP as the core is designed for harmonic compensation for power system in this paper. With the hardware circuit configuring, software programming and circuit debugging, the system performances and parameters are tested and studied during normal operation respectively. The testing results show that the designed hardware circuit and software program are correct. The designed filter has the advantages of simple circuit structure and good compensation effect.
