This paper presents the development of a novel magnetorheological damper (MRD) which has a self-induced ability. In this study, a linear variable differential sensor (LVDS) based on the electromagnetic induction mechanism was integrated with a conventional MRD. The structure of the displacement differential self-induced magnetorheological damper (DDSMRD) was developed, and the theory of displacement differential self-induced performance was deduced. The static experiments of the DDSMRD under different displacement positions were carried out by applying sine excitation signals to the excitation coils, and the experimental results show that the self-induced voltage is proportional to the damper piston displacement. Meanwhile, the dynamic experiments were also carried out using the fatigue test machine to investigate the change of the self-induced voltage under the typical direct current inputs and the different piston rod displacements; the experimental results also show that the self-induced voltage is proportional to the damper piston displacements. Additionally, the dynamic mechanical performance of the DDSMRD was evaluated. The theory deduction and the experimental results indicate that the proposed DDSMRD has the ability of the integrated displacement sensor in addition to the output controllable damping force.

An experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the mathematical modelling of the magnetorheological (MR) damper featuring annular radial gap on its valve. The experiment was conducted using a fatigue dynamic test machine under particular excitation frequency and amplitude to get force-velocity and force-displament characteristics. Meanwhile, the mathematical modelling was done using quasi-steady modelling approach. Simulation using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference (ANFIS) Algorithm (Gaussian and Generalized Bell) were also carried out to portray the damping force-displacement modelling that is used to compare with the experimental results. The experimental characteristics show that amplitudes excitation and current input affect the result damping force value. The comparison of the experimental and mathematical results presented in this paper shows a significant difference in damping force value and that the quasi-steady modelling could not significantly approach the damping force-velocity results. Moreover, the semi-active damper is compared to the passive damper. The results show that a semi-active damper performs better than a passive damper because it only requires a little power. Based on the damping force-displacement modelling, it can be seen that Gaussian has a higher accuracy rather than Generalized Bell. Discussion on the energy dissipation and equivalent damping coefficient were also accomodated in this paper. Having completed in mathematical modelling and simulation, the damper would be ready for further work in-vehicle application that is development of control system.

The structure of a shock absorber based on magnetorheological (MR) damper with a metering pin is proposed, and structure of the magnetic circuit of MR damper is optimized. By drop tests, the damping characteristics of the shock absorber and damping effect are tested. The experimental results show that the shock absorber has the characteristic of a wide damping force adjustment range and lower energy dissipation. The maximum vertical load and shock absorber piston displacement can be changed at same drop height by changing the current. It has also been proved that shock absorber based on MR damper is better than conventional oleo-pneumatic shock absorber on adjustment of damping force.

A novel scissor-type magnetorheological seat suspension with self-sustainability which integrated self-powered, self-sensing, and self-adaptability is proposed in this study. The adaptive rotary damping system consisted of the rotary magnetorheological damper, and rotary permanent magnet direct current generator is designed to realize the self-sustainability. Effects of damping force and isolation object mass are analyzed for further designing and testing based on the dynamic model. The rotary magnetorheological damper and the electrical part are designed and analyzed theoretically. Series of experimental tests are conducted to verify the feasibility and control performances. The experimental results show that the on–off balance control algorithm based on the self-sensing signals can improve the comfort than the directly and supply-with-rectifier control modes.

Abstract Expressions are derived for side force and self-aligning torque of a simple tire model on wet roads with velocity-dependent friction. The results agree qualitatively with experimental results at moderate speeds. In particular, the theory correctly predicts that the self-aligning torque can become negative under easily realizable circumstances. The slip angle at which the torque reverses sign should increase with the normal load.

Abstract A laser displacement sensor which has a resolution of 0.5 μm was used to determine the measurement of a curved workpiece profile in turning. This sensor is attached to a specially designed stage and is operated by three motors which are controlled by a fuzzy control algorithm. The experimental results show that the measuring system can be applied to workpieces having inclination angles of up to around 45°. The proposed measuring system has a practical measuring accuracy to within ten micrometers.

This paper presents the design and multi-physics optimization of a novel multi-coil magnetorheological (MR) damper with a variable resistance gap (VRG-MMD). Enabling four electromagnetic coils (EMs) with individual exciting currents, a simplified magnetic equivalent circuit was presented and the magnetic flux generated by each voltage source passing through each active gap was calculated as vector operations. To design the optimal geometry of the VRG-MMD, the multi-physics optimization problem including electromagnetics and fluid dynamics has been formulated as a multi-objective function with weighting ratios among total damping force, dynamic range, and inductive time constant. Based on the selected design variables (DVs), six cases with different weighting ratios were optimized using Bound Optimization BY Quadratic Approximation (BOBYQA) technique. Finally, the vibration performance of the optimal VRG-MMD subjected to sinusoidal and triangle displacement excitations was compared to that of the typical multi-coil MR damper.

The Raman spectra of oleums, i.e. mixtures of sulphur trioxide and sulphuric acid, have been re-examined. Similar measurements on the sulphur trioxide – deuterosulphuric acid (D2SO4) system are also reported. The experimental results and conclusions of previous similar work on oleums are discussed. By comparison of the spectra of oleums with those of the polysulphuryl halides it is shown that the polysulphuric acids H2S2O7 and H2S3O10 are present in this system. The increase in the frequency of the SO2 stretching vibrations with increasing concentration of sulphur trioxide gives evidence for the existence of higher polysulphuric acids such as H2S4O13 at high concentrations of sulphur trioxide. In relatively concentrated oleum, sulphur trioxide monomer and trimer are also present. It is shown that the self-dissociation of liquid H2S2O7 gives mainly molecular H2S2O10 and H2SO4 and not ionic species. The conclusions reached from the interpretation of the Raman spectra of the D2SO4–SO3 system are similar to those arrived at for sulphuric acid oleums. The spectra of solutions of NaHSO4 in oleums were also examined, and are discussed.

Oil dampers are widely used as a popular countermeasure to mitigate the stay cables vibration. In this study, one actual oil damper designed for some long cable-stayed was experimentally investigated to evaluate the durability. 4 million cycles loading, with frequency of 4 Hz and amplitude of 1 mm, was imposed on the damper. The excitation displacement and damping force were measured and the equivalent damping was calculated from the experimental results. The stiffness effects of dampers behaved during durability tests were also analyzed quantitatively. The test results showed that the dampers were still in good condition after 4 million cycles loading and the dampers temperatures were stable at 50 degree centigrade during the test. According to the durability test results, a model for performance deterioration of damper was proposed to predict the lifetime of oil dampers.

Dampers are the parts of suspensions which improve the ride comfort and the safety of vehicles including motorcycles. Magnetorheological dampers are very attractive for motorcycle suspensions, because of their controllable properties and their fast responses. Considerable energy is wasted owing to the energy dissipation by dampers encountering road irregularities and accelerating processes during everyday use of motorcycles. In addition, the current magnetorheological suspension systems depend on the power supply of batteries. Therefore, in this paper, a self-powered magnetorheological damper for motorcycle suspensions is proposed and implemented for the first time. It can convert the wasted mechanical energy into useful electrical energy to power itself. There are great merits in this such as energy saving, independence of extra batteries and less maintenance in comparison with conventional magnetorheological suspension systems, while keeping controllable performances. A customized prototype of the self-powered magnetorheological damper that is compatible with a motorcycle is developed and actually implemented in a motorcycle. Modelling for the self-powered magnetorheological damper is developed and validated by laboratory testing. Laboratory testing showed that the self-powered feature works well to generate the electrical power and to vary the magnetorheological damping force. Preliminary system-level testing showed that a self-powered magnetorheological suspension results in a better ride comfort, compared with that of a magnetorheological suspension without power generation. The results showed that implementing self-powered magnetorheological dampers in motorcycle suspensions is feasible and beneficial.

To restrain the interference of micro-vibration caused by Control Moment Gyroscope, a new control method based on Magnetorheological damper was proposed in this paper. A mechanical model based on the structure of the presented design was built, and the semi-active control algorithm of damping force was proposed for the designed Magnetorheological damper. The magnetic flux density and other magnetic field parameters were considered and analyzed in Maxwell, and also the related hardware circuit which implements the control algorithm was prepared to test the presented design and algorithm. The results of simulation and experiments show that the presented Magnetorheological damper model and semi-active control algorithm can complete the requirements, and the vibration suppression method is efficient for Control Moment Gyroscope.
