The virtualization of cloud computing improves the utilization of resources and energy. And a cloud user can deploy his/her own applications and related data on a pay-as-you-go basis. The communications between an application and a data storage node, as well as within the application, have a great impact on the execution efficiency of the application. The locations of subtasks of an application and the data that transferred between the subtasks are the main reason why communication delay exists. The communication delay can affect the completion time of the application. In this paper, we take into account the data transmission time and communications between subtasks and propose a heuristic optimal virtual machine (VM) placement algorithm. Related simulations demonstrate that this algorithm can reduce the completion time of user tasks and ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of the overall network performance of applications when running in a cloud computing environment.

Purpose Cloud computing is one of the digitalization principles used in some sectors like banking, health and construction industry. This paper aims to examine the benefits of applying cloud computing for construction sustainability in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach The cloud computing benefits-related data were retrieved from previous studies and complemented with a questionnaire survey to obtain data from stakeholders involved in the execution of construction projects in Lagos State, Nigeria, through a convenient sampling technique. In addition, the relative importance index (RII) technique was used to investigate the acquired data. At the same time, analysis was accomplished using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Findings indicated that numerous benefits could be derived by adopting cloud computing in the Nigerian construction industry. Findings The findings from RII analysis showed the significant benefits of data storage ubiquity (i.e. location independence), high situational awareness, team collaboration, compatibility with advanced production facilities and improved project planning. Furthermore, the analysis of these benefits was conducted using EFA for the four construction maxims: construction productivity, back-office activities, design management and billing. Originality/value This research illustrated the benefits of cloud computing in achieving a successful construction project. Besides, these findings are not only useful for achieving sustainable construction in Nigeria but also applicable to many developing countries.

In the modern era, workflows are adopted as a powerful and attractive paradigm for expressing/solving a variety of applications like scientific, data intensive computing, and big data applications such as MapReduce and Hadoop. These complex applications are described using high-level representations in workflow methods. With the emerging model of cloud computing technology, scheduling in the cloud becomes the important research topic. Consequently, workflow scheduling problem has been studied extensively over the past few years, from homogeneous clusters, grids to the most recent paradigm, cloud computing. The challenges that need to be addressed lies in task-resource mapping, QoS requirements, resource provisioning, performance fluctuation, failure handling, resource scheduling, and data storage. This work focuses on the complete study of the resource provisioning and scheduling algorithms in cloud environment focusing on Infrastructure as a service (IaaS). We provided a comprehensive understanding of existing scheduling techniques and provided an insight into research challenges that will be a possible future direction to the researchers.

As we are living in technology dominating era, the role of cloud computing as one of the rapidly emerging technologies is highly indispensable. This cloud computing holds load distribution concept, which is usually addressed as a challenging phenomenon, to handle multiple requests which are coming from geographically differentiated locations. There are various load balancing mechanisms exits for the effective distribution of the work load. This load balancing mechanism takes the advent of the virtualization approach on resources to optimize the utilization of the resources. In virtualization, the creation of virtual machine and mapping the same to the suitable request makes the cloud computing a prominent technology. This paper work considers various load balancing mechanisms for the allocation of resources and also shows a comparative study on them with the help of an example scenario. These load balancing algorithms are applied on applications like real-time systems and prioritized medical field related data storage system. This research work is implemented in Windows Azure Platform as Cloud Operation System under load balancing component.

Cloud computing and cloud data storage have become important applications on the Internet. An important trend in cloud computing and cloud data storage is group collaboration since it is a great inducement for an entity to use a cloud service, especially for an international enterprise. In this paper we propose a cloud data storage scheme with some protocols to support group collaboration. A group of users can operate on a set of data collaboratively with dynamic data update supported. Every member of the group can access, update and verify the data independently. The verification can also be authorized to a third-party auditor for convenience.
