Induced by coal mining, the fractures constantly occur in geologic strata until failure occurs, which provide channels for water flow. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the permeability evolution of rocks under load. Borehole sampling was conducted in a bedrock layer beneath an aquifer, and the permeability evolution of sandstone specimens under different confining pressures was tested in rock mechanics testing laboratories. The results indicated that the permeability gradually decreases with the increasing confining pressures, while the peak strength increases with the increase of confining pressures. The minimum and maximum permeabilities occurred in the sandstone specimens that were subjected to elastic deformation and strain-softening stages, respectively. The failure, and maximum permeability, of these sandstone specimens did not occur simultaneously. To prevent the flow channel being formed due to the development and failure of rock fractures, a method of backfill gob was proposed and also the influence of backfill on fracture development was discussed.

The hysteresis of water-sediment mixture seepage in rock fractures is one of the critical factors which affect the determination of the timing of coal mine water inrush disasters prevention and control. In this paper, a mechanical model was established to study the hysteresis whose criteria were also put forward. The area of the hysteresis loop and the maximum pressure gradient were selected as characterization parameters of hysteresis. On this basis, an experimental system was established to study influences of different sand particle size, sand mass concentration, and fracture opening on water-sediment mixture seepage in rock fractures. The results indicated that the increase in the sand particle size and sand mass concentration could effectively enhance hysteresis characteristics of specimen fractures. While hysteresis characteristics decreased significantly with the increase of fracture opening. The research results are useful to prevent and control water inrush disasters of coal mine.

In order to study the influence of different confining pressures on the stability and airtightness of dolomite underground gas storage, a permeability test under hydrostatic confining pressure, conventional triaxial compression test and gas–solid coupling test under triaxial compression were carried out on MTS815 test machine. During the tests, an acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system was also employed to estimate the rock damage. The experimental results showed that the relationships between permeability, porosity and hydrostatic confining pressure were exponential function and power function, respectively. Increasing confining pressure reduced the porosity and permeability of dolomite, and increased its triaxial compressive strength, but the addition of nitrogen reduced the compressive strength of dolomite by 10~30%, the higher the confining pressure, the smaller the difference. Compared with the maximum permeability under 15 MPa, confining pressure in the gas–solid coupling experiment, the maximum permeability under confining pressure of 30, 45, and 60 MPa is reduced by 42.0%, 84.4%, and 97.9%, respectively. In addition, the AE activity of dolomite decreases significantly with the increase in confining pressure, which also delayed the arrival of the AE active period.

In this paper, based on SMP criteria, combination of strain softening of rock material mechanics theory, the after peak friction angleφfor the intermediate variables, the residual strainεto express the after peak nonlinear elastic modulusE, and finally establish a unified non-linear constitutive model of the rock peak residual stress. Combination Xiao Guanzhuang Eastern Mine typical breakdown rock of diorite triaxial test , get stress-strain curves for different confining pressures by this model. It shows that peak constitutive relation of this study can simulate the experimental results, prove the rationality of the model.

The fracture of sandstone is closely related to the condition of internal microcracks and the fabric of micrograin. The macroscopic mechanical property depends on its microscopic structures. However, it is difficult to obtain the law of the microcrack growth under loading by experiments. A series of microscopic sandstone models were established with particle flow code 3D (PFC3D) and based on the triaxial experiment results on sandstones. The experimental and numerical simulations of natural and saturated sandstones under different confining pressures were implemented. We analyzed the evolution of rock deformation and the rock fracture development from a microscopic view. Results show that although the sandstones are under different confining pressures, the law of microcrack growth is the same. That is, the number of the microcracks increases slowly in the initial stage and then increases exponentially. The number of shear cracks is more than the tensile cracks, and the proportion of the shear cracks increases with the increase of confining pressure. The cracking strength of natural and saturated sandstones is 26% and 27% of the peak strength, respectively. Under low confining pressure, the total number of cracks in the saturated sample is 20% more than that of the natural sample and the strongly scattered chain is barely seen. With the increase of the confining pressure, the effect of water on the total number of cracks is reduced and the distribution of the strong chain is even more uniform. In other words, it is the confining pressure that mainly affects the distribution of the force chain, irrespective of the state of the rock, natural or saturated. The research results reveal that the control mechanism of shear crack friction under the different stress states of a rock slope in the reservoir area provides a basis for evaluating the stability of rock mass and predicting the occurrence of geological disasters.
