An appropriate understanding of the hydraulic characteristics of the two-phase flow in the rock fracture network is important in many engineering applications. To investigate the two-phase flow in the fracture network, a study on the two-phase flow characteristics in the intersecting fractures is necessary. In order to describe the two-phase flow in the intersecting fractures quantitatively, in this study, a gas-water two-phase flow experiment was conducted in a smooth 3D model with intersecting fractures. The results in this specific 3D model show that the flow structures in the intersecting fractures were similar to those of the stratified wavy flow in pipes. The nonlinearity induced by inertial force and turbulence in the intersecting fractures cannot be neglected in the two-phase flow, and the Martinelli-Lockhart model is effective for the two-phase flow in intersecting fractures. Delhaye’s model can be adapted for the cases in this experiment. The turbulence of the flow can be indicated by the values of C in Delhaye’s model, but resetting the appropriate range of the values of C is necessary.

Meso-structure is an important factor affecting the characteristics of rock fracture. To determine the factors influencing the internal meso-structural characteristics upon the crack generation and extension, rock samples were tested under uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading and examined using computed tomography (CT) scanning. CT scanning was used to visualize and investigate the entire process of fracture source generation and its development in three dimensions, and finally the location information of the fracture source was determined. The mineral composition and structure along the fracture path inside the specimen were studied by using a polarizing microscope, and the evolution of fracture propagation around mineral particles was revealed based on its mineralogical characteristics. Results indicate that based on the fracture source around different rock meso-structure types, the initial fracture source can also be divided into different types, namely, the primary porosity type, the micro-crack type, and the mineral grain type. The strength characteristics of mineral grains can determine whether the crack extends around the gravel or through it. The hard grains at the crack-tip promote the transformation of tensile stress to shear stress, which lead to the change in the direction of crack extension and bifurcation. The spatial shape of the cracks after rock fracture is related to the initial distribution of minerals and is more complicated in areas where minerals are concentrated. The crack extension around gravel particles also generates a mode of failure, affecting large grains with gravel spalling from the matrix. The findings provide a study basis for identifying the potentially dangerous areas and provide early warning for the safety of underground engineering construction operations.

Hydration and carbonation reactions within the Earth cause an increase in solid volume by up to several tens of vol%, which can induce stress and rock fracture. Observations of naturally hydrated and carbonated peridotite suggest that permeability and fluid flow are enhanced by reaction-induced fracturing. However, permeability enhancement during solid-volume–increasing reactions has not been achieved in the laboratory, and the mechanisms of reaction-accelerated fluid flow remain largely unknown. Here, we present experimental evidence of significant permeability enhancement by volume-increasing reactions under confining pressure. The hydromechanical behavior of hydration of sintered periclase [MgO + H2O → Mg(OH)2] depends mainly on the initial pore-fluid connectivity. Permeability increased by three orders of magnitude for low-connectivity samples, whereas it decreased by two orders of magnitude for high-connectivity samples. Permeability enhancement was caused by hierarchical fracturing of the reacting materials, whereas a decrease was associated with homogeneous pore clogging by the reaction products. These behaviors suggest that the fluid flow rate, relative to reaction rate, is the main control on hydromechanical evolution during volume-increasing reactions. We suggest that an extremely high reaction rate and low pore-fluid connectivity lead to local stress perturbations and are essential for reaction-induced fracturing and accelerated fluid flow during hydration/carbonation.

In order to study the fracture ability classification of rock mass under the cracking action of supercritical CO2 phase transition, based on the classification theory of rock mass in blasting engineering, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-entropy weight method (EWM) and the cloud model classification method for rock mass cracking under CO2 phase transformation are proposed. In this method, rock density, rock tensile strength, rock wave impedance, and rock mass integrity coefficient are used as the factors to determine the level of rock mass fracturing, and the evaluation index system of rock mass fracturing is established. Through this evaluation method, the rock mass in a reconstruction project section of Nyingchi, Tibet, is classified and evaluated. The results present that this new classification method of rock mass fracture ability uses AHP–EWM to carry out the weight distribution of the classification index. In addition, it is combined with the cloud model for the classification division, overcoming the traditional classification method fixed with appraisal pattern flaw. Therefore, it has validity and feasibility. According to the characteristics of fracture ability, the rock masses in the area to be rebuilt on the Tibet Highway are divided into grade II, grade III, and grade IV, which provides scientific guidance for the construction of the project.

The numerical techniques for modelling the rock fracture have been briefly reviewed. A hybrid finite-discrete element method (HFDEM) is proposed to simulate various fracture types of rock. A fracture model is implemented in the HFDEM for simulation of the three main fracture types. In addition, the influence of the strain rate is considered during the HFDEM modelling rock behavior. Then, two typical rock mechanism tests are employed to calibrate the HFDEM. The proposed method has well modelled the rock fracture processes and can obtain reasonable stress distribution and force–displacement curves. After that, the HFDEM is used to model three convention bending tests. The obtained rock fracture processes indicates that the HFDEM can simulate various fracture types. The obtained rock strengths and fracture toughness indicate that the HFDEM can reflect the influence of the strain rate. It is concluded that the HFDEM can model the entire and complete rock fracture process during the three convention bending tests, and it also can capture the rock’s behavior on the strain rate.

During the process of coal road excavation, various interference signals, induced by environmental noise, drilling, and scraper loader, will affect the risk assessment of coal and gas outburst using acoustic emission (AE) and electromagnetic radiation (EMR) monitoring technology. To distinguish between different interference signals and danger signals, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was used to decompose and reconstruct signals, and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) was used to obtain the time-frequency plane. The research results show that: (1) interference signals generally exhibit fluctuating changes within small ranges; in comparison, the intensity of AE and EMR signals caused by coal and rock fracture is found to continuously rise for a long period (longer than 2 h). (2) Different interference signals and danger signals differ significantly in their time-frequency plane. (3) Through decomposition and reconstruction of original signal, obvious precursor information can be found in the time-frequency plane of reconstructed signals.

This paper deals with numerical prediction of temperature (weakening) effects on the tensile strength of granitic rock. A 3D numerical approach based on the embedded discontinuity finite elements is developed for this purpose. The governing thermo-mechanical initial/boundary value problem is solved with an explicit (in time) staggered method while using extreme mass scaling to increase the critical time step. Rock fracture is represented by the embedded discontinuity concept implemented here with the linear (4-node) tetrahedral elements. The rock is modelled as a linear elastic (up to fracture by the Rankine criterion) heterogeneous material consisting of Quartz, Feldspar and Biotite minerals. Due to its strong and anomalous temperature dependence upon approaching the α-β transition at the Curie point (~573 °C), only Quartz in the numerical rock depends on temperature in the present approach. In the numerical testing, the sample is first volumetrically heated to a target temperature. Then, the uniaxial tension test is performed on the cooled down sample. The simulations demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach as the experimental deterioration, by thermally induced cracking, of the rock tensile strength is predicted with a good accuracy.

The diversion tunnel of a hydropower station is characterized by low quality surrounding rock and weak structural planes. During excavation, rock mass spalling and cracking frequently occur. To evaluate the stability of a rock mass during tunnel excavation, high-precision microseismic monitoring technology was introduced to carry out real-time monitoring. Based on the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of microseismic events, the main damage areas and their influencing factors of tunnel rock mass were studied. By analyzing the source characteristic parameters of the concentration area of microseismic activities, the rock fracture mechanism of the concentration area was revealed. The 3D numerical model of diversion tunnel was established, and the deformation characteristics of the rock mass under the control of different combination types of weak structural planes were obtained. The results showed that the microseismic event was active between 29 October 2020 and 6 November 2020, and the energy release increased sharply. The main damage areas of the rock mass were located at Stakes K0 + 500–K0 + 600 m. Microseismic source parameters revealed that shear failure or fault-slip failure induced by geological structures had an important influence on the stability of the surrounding rock. The numerical simulation results were consistent with the microseismic monitoring results and indicated that among the three kinds of structural plane combination types, including “upright triangle”, “inverted triangle” and “nearly parallel”, the “upright triangle” structure had the most significant influence on the stability of the surrounding rock. In addition, the maximum displacement of the surrounding rock had a trend of lateral migration to the larger dip angle in the three combined structural plane types. The research results will provide significant references for the safety evaluation and construction design of similar tunnels.
