Engineering classification of complex jointed rock mass is influenced and controlled by many factors with random, nonlinear, and unascertained characteristics, which is an extremely complicated problem. This paper introduces a comprehensive method to classify the rock mass with complex joints. Firstly, evaluation indexes are described by the interval number theory. Secondly, the weight values of the evaluation indexes are determined by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Thirdly, the connectional expectation between interval numbers is analyzed and the classification grade of jointed rock mass quality is identified by the set pair analysis theory. The new method can not only describe the dynamic evolution trend of various influencing factors, but also simplify the analysis process of the relationship between interval numbers. The Songta dam abutment rock mass is selected as a study case to verify the rationality of the new method. The classification results of rock mass quality obtained by the new method are in accordance with the actual situation and are consistent with the results provided by the RMR classification.

The factors affecting the TBM tunnel behavior in jointed rock mass is investigated. In the numerical models the concrete segment lining of TBM tunnel is concerned, which is simulated as a tube neglecting the segment joint. And the TBM tunnel construction process is simulate considering the excavation and installing of the segment linings. Some cases are analyzed with different joint orientation, joint spacing, joint strength and tunnel depth. The results show that the shape and areas of loosing zones of the tunnel are influenced by the parameters of joint sets and in-situ stress significantly, such as dip angle, spacing, strength, and the in-situ stress statement. And the stress and deformation of the tunnel lining are influenced by the parameters of joint sets and in-situ stress, too.

In this study, grading of surrounding rock was based on rock mass basic quality (BQ) values according to the specifications in China. Numerical approach was to construct synthetic rock mass (SRM) model to represent the jointed rock mass, and obtain the strength of the rock mass. It represented intact rock by the bonded particle model (BPM), and represent joint behaviour by the smooth joint model (SJM) to construct the discrete fracture network (DFN). In the Hongtuzhang Tunnel, the micro properties of granite cores with different weathered degrees were determined by the validation process, and the calculation representative elementary volume (REV) of surrounding rock was 15 m×15 m. Five slightly weathered, three slightly to moderately weathered, and two moderately weathered granite surrounding rock mass models were established based on the probability distribution of joint sets in each borehole, the conversion BQ value was acquired according by the calculated strength of rock mass model. It was discussed the differences of surrounding rock grades between the geological survey method and the numerical calculation method, and then found that the geological survey report is higher than the numerical calculation method predicted. And the numerical calculation is consistent with the actual excavation of rock mass at borehole A1388.
