The accurate design of ship routing plans in arctic areas is not easy, considering that navigation conditions (e.g., weather, visibility, and ice thickness) may change frequently. A ship’s crew identifies sea ice in arctic channels with the help of radar echoes, and ship maneuvering decisions are made to avoid navigation interference. Ship officials must manually and consistently change the ship’s route of travel, which is time-consuming and tedious. To address this issue, we propose a near-field route optimization model for the purpose of automatically selecting an optimal route with the help of radar echo images. The ship near-field route optimization model uses a multiobjective optimal strategy considering factors of minimum navigation risk and steaming distance. We verified the model’s performance with the support of the Xuelong voyage dataset. This research finding can help a ship’s crew to design more reasonable navigation routes in polar channels.

The optimization of blank design is the key to the implementation of a green innovation strategy. The process of blank design determines more than 80% of resource consumption and environmental emissions during the blank processing. Unfortunately, the traditional blank design method based on function and quality is not suitable for today’s sustainable development concept. In order to solve this problem, a research method of blank design optimization based on a low-carbon and low-cost process route optimization is proposed. Aiming at the processing characteristics of complex box type blank parts, the concept of the workstep element is proposed to represent the characteristics of machining parts, a low-carbon and low-cost multi-objective optimization model is established, and relevant constraints are set up. In addition, an intelligent generation algorithm of a working step chain is proposed, and combined with a particle swarm optimization algorithm to solve the optimization model. Finally, the feasibility and practicability of the method are verified by taking the processing of the blank of an emulsion box as an example. The data comparison shows that the comprehensive performance of the low-carbon and low-cost multi-objective optimization is the best, which meets the requirements of low-carbon processing, low-cost, and sustainable production.

An implementation framework of stepped-frequency LFM (SF-LFM) radar echoes simulator is presented in the paper based on the decomposition and calculation of SF-LFM radar echoes of a moving target. The proposed method can be implemented conveniently with direct digital synthesis (DDS) logic resource. The feasibility of this resolution is verified with computer and semi-physical simulations experiments.

Abstract The algorithm for bird radar echo selection was developed in Israel and has been successfully used for many years to monitor birds in periods of massive intercontinental migration in order to ensure flight safety in civil and military aviation. However, it has been found that under certain meteorological conditions the bird echo selection algorithm does not filter out false signals formed by atomized clouds and atmospheric inhomogeneities. Although the algorithm is designed to identify and sift false signals, some useful echoes from smaller birds are erroneously sifted as well. This paper presents some additional features of radar echoes reflected from atmospheric formations that can be taken into account to prevent the loss of useful bird echoes. These additional features are based on the use of polarization, fluctuation and Doppler characteristics of a reflected signal. By taking these features into account we can reduce the number of false signals and increase the accuracy of the bird echo selection algorithm. The paper presents methods for using radar echoes to identify species and sizes of birds, together with recommendations on using the data to ensure flight safety during periods of massive intercontinental bird migration.

Aircraft have been guided with the aid of radar data to measure turbulence in thunderstorm areas. Although turbulence is frequently encountered in areas containing highly reflective and sharp-edged echoes, no unique correspondence has been discovered between single-echo parameters and collocated within-storm turbulence. A theory embracing some of the time-dependent relationships between fields of wind and precipitation suggests that the correspondence between instantaneous distributions of radar echoes and turbulence is statistical rather than precise. Statistical bases for study of radar echo-turbulence relationships are outlined.

Optimizing Route for Hazardous Materials Logistics (ORHML) belongs to a class of problems referred to as NP-Hard, and a strict constraint of it makes it harder to solve. In order to dealing with ORHML, an improved hybrid ant colony algorithm (HACA) was devised. To achieve the purpose of balancing risk and cost for route based on the principle of ACA that used to solve TSP, the improved HACA was designed. Considering the capacity of road network and the maximum expected risk limits, a route optimization model to minimize the total cost is established based on network flow theory. Improvement on route construction rule and pheromone updating rule was adopted on the basis of the former algorithm. An example was analyzed to demonstrate the correctness of the application. It is proved that improved HACA is efficient and feasible in solving ORHML.

As a strong western-boundary current, the Kuroshio Current has significant effects on the ship navigation in the East China Sea (ECS). To quantitatively know more about its influence, we present simulations of the ocean current in the North Pacific Ocean using the well-known Princeton Ocean Model (POM). The high-resolution current distributions could be applied to conduct numerical simulations of the ship navigation, which utilized a ship maneuvering model known as the Mathematical Maneuvering Group (MMG). Calculation of a container ship as well as a training ship have been conducted. The simulation results of both ships can show the significant effects of ocean currents on ship’s drifting as well as speed change, which could be used to optimize cost of both fuel and time by properly utilizing the current in ship routing.

Aviation emergency rescue is an effective means of nature disaster relief that is widely used in many countries. The dispatching plan of aviation emergency rescue guarantees the efficient implementation of this relief measure. The conventional dispatching plan that does not consider random wind factors leads to a nonprecise quick-responsive scheme and serious safety issues. In this study, an aviation emergency rescue framework that considers the influence of random wind at flight trajectory is proposed. In this framework, the predicted wind information for a disaster area is updated by using unscented Kalman filtering technology. Then, considering the practical scheduling problem of aircraft emergency rescue at present, a multiobjective model is established in this study. An optimization model aimed at maximizing the relief supply satisfaction, rescue priority satisfaction, and minimizing total rescue flight distance is formulated. Finally, the transport times of aircraft with and without the influence of random wind are analyzed on the basis of the data of an earthquake disaster area. Results show that the proposed dispatching plan that considers the constraints of updated wind speed and direction is highly applicable in real operations.
