<span lang="EN-MY">Maintaining current municipal solid waste management (MSWM) for the next ten years would not be efficient anymore as it has brought many environmental issues such as air pollution. This project has proposed Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based prediction algorithm that can forecast Solid Waste Generation (SWG) based on population growth factor. This study uses Malaysian population as sample size and the data for weight is acquired via authorized Malaysia statistics’ websites. All data will be normalized in the pre-processing stage before proceeding to the prediction using Visual Gene Developer. This project evaluated the performance using R<sup>2</sup> value. Two hidden layers with ten and five nodes were used respectively. The result portrayed that there will be an increase of 29.03 percent of SWG in year 2031 compared to 2012. The limitation to this study is that the data was not based on real time as it was restricted by the government.</span>

This project has proposed Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based prediction algorithm that can forecast Solid Waste Generation (SWG) based on household size factor. </span>Kulliyyah of Engineering (KOE) in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has been chosen as the sample size for household size factor. A smart waste bin has been developed that can measure the weight, detect the emptiness level of the waste bin, stores information and have direct communication between waste bin and collector crews. <span lang="EN-MY">This study uses the information obtained from the smart waste bin for the waste weight while the sample size of KOE has been obtained through KOE’s department. All data will be normalized in the pre-processing stage before proceeding to the prediction using Visual Gene Developer. This project evaluated the performance using R<sup>2</sup> value. Two hidden layers with five and ten nodes were used respectively. The result portrayed that </span>the average rate of increment of waste weight is 2.05 percent from week one until week twenty. The limitation to this study is that the amount of smart waste bin should be replicated more so that all data for waste weight is directly collected from the smart waste bin<em><span>.</span></em>

Municipal solid waste management is a huge challenge specially in the developing countries. The first and fundamental step to solve the problem of municipal solid waste management is by waste segregation at source and separate collection of waste, which will help to recover recyclable materials and reduce the amount of waste that needs to be disposed at the dumpsite or landfill site. In Nepal, waste segregation at source is mandated by law but the government is not able to implement it successfully. This paper assesses the willingness of the households to practice waste segregation in future if the government enforces the law and various factors that influences the practice. Data was collected from 401 households which was selected using stratified sampling technique from all the municipal wards, the lowest administrative units in Nepal. The finding shows that about 67% of the respondents are willing to segregate waste in future if the government enforces the law. Logit regression model was employed to identify the factors that influence waste segregation practice. The significant variables found from this study are environmental awareness, waste collection service, willingness to pay, make compost, and segregated waste for a week variables, which are statistically significant at 1% level of significance. Income variable is significant at 5% level of significance and gender variable is significant at 10% level of significance. It is recommended that the concerned stakeholders should educate the households on the importance of waste segregation and consider these traits of households before enforcing the law.

The increase of solid waste production is a general problem in municipality, particularly of plastic waste. The durability, light-weight, anticorrosiveness, and inexpensiveness properties of plastic make it favorable to be used in daily life, including in Salatiga. However, plastic is one of some non-biodegradable materials that could lead to soil and water pollution as it contains toxic compounds such as aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, and organochlorine. Various studies in municipal solid waste management have been conducted. While those studies often applied various approaches separately, researches in regard to the role of stakeholders in municipal solid waste management are very limited. This study aims to explain the plastic waste management in Salatiga based on the role of the corresponding stakeholders. This qualitative study shows that there are four stakeholders who were involved in municipal plastic waste management in Salatiga. They were the households who generate wastes, the scavengers who sorts the wastes, Bank Sampah and collectors who have the same role in order to collect the wastes and treat the plastic wastes through reusing or recycling processes, and the government. Currently, efforts in waste treatment in Salatiga are focused on the system of collecting-tranferring-disposal mode, waste treatment by reuse and recycle processing, and landfilling. Reducing plastic consumption must take into account the sociocultural aspect and environmental awareness, as the people still interested to use plastic instead of using other materials in substitution. Finally, the role of government is central to educate the community in term of sorting activities and reducing waste production, build the capacity of Bank Sampah, and manage the role of scavengers and collectors. Other alternatives include creating synergy between the collectors and Bank Sampah, as well as ensuring final treatment of the unprocessed wastes disposed by collectors and Bank Sampah.

Waste has always been a part of human life settlement and we have been either very careless with our waste by discarding it into the streets, the air, water, and in our backyards, or consciously dumping it close to those least powerful segments of the society at all times. Waste has been a problem for human beings and people have been least concerned about its eco-friendly disposal. Developed countries came up with many programmes, regulations and policies to address the municipal solid waste crisis, but still it is an unresolved problem. Municipal solid waste management is still a complex issue everywhere in the globalized and techno scientific world due to the carefree mindset, rapid urbanization process, unscientific development process and lack of social responsibility. In these circumstances, municipal solid waste managementcannot be addressed by mere technological innovations or adoptions. Moreover, the responsibility of municipal solid waste managementcannot be left to the Government alone. Instead, participation of various stakeholders needs to be ensured and coordinated for achieving sustainability. Taking Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in the state of Kerala, India as a case, this paper discusses the extent and ways in which various stakeholders engage in the two main approaches for municipal solid waste management, namely- centralized approach and decentralized approach. The research study was conducted during the period June, 2020 to December, 2020.

In the last decades, integral municipal solid waste management (IMSWM) has become one of the most challenging areas for local governmental authorities, which have struggled to lay down sustainable and financially stable policies for the sector. In this paper a model that evaluates the efficiency of IMSWMs through a combination of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is presented. In a first stage, applying DEA, municipal administrations are classified according to the efficiency of their garbage processing systems. This is done in order to infer what modifications are necessary to make garbage handling more efficient. In a second stage, an ANN is used for predicting the necessary resources needed to make the waste processing system efficient. This methodology is applied on a toy model with 50 towns as well as on a real-world case of 21 cities. The results show the usefulness of the model for the evaluation of relative efficiency and for guiding the improvement of the system.

This chapter aims to describe the status and challenges of waste management (WM) in Rwanda. Currently, waste is managed by the Ministry of Local Government, with the participation of private companies which are only in charge of waste collection. In the city of Kigali, waste is managed by the city of Kigali whereas in other four remaining provinces waste is managed by the districts. Implementation of waste management policy is carried out by a government-owned company called Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) Ltd. The per capita solid waste generation rate in the city of Kigali is equal to 0.57 kg/person/day. A lot of legislations and regulations on WM are in place but their enforcement is weak. The Government of Rwanda should do more in terms of enforcing WM legislations and regulations.

Purpose – This paper examined the current status of municipal solid waste management across Nigeria. The core aspects covered are generation, characterization, collection, scavenging, open dumping, disposal and environmental implications of poor solid waste management. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive overview of the current state of municipal solid waste management in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – This study was executed by a combination of an extensive literature search and field study. Solid waste generation rates for 31 Nigerian cities were obtained from literature. In addition, characteristics of municipal solid waste from 26 Nigerian cities were also obtained from literature. Other aspects such as characterization of solid waste obtained from final dumpsite and heavy metals accumulation in solid waste dumpsites were undertaken first hand. Findings – Solid waste generation rate was found to vary from 0.13 kg/capita/day in Ogbomosho to 0.71 kg/capita/day in Ado-Ekiti. Factors affecting solid waste generation rates were identified. Typically, food waste was found to constitute close to 50 percent of overall municipal solid waste in Nigerian cities. This study shows that the rate of generation of plastics, water proof materials and diapers has assumed an upward trend. Due to the dysfunctional state of many municipal waste management authorities, many cities have been overrun by open dumps. For instance, more than 50 percent of residents of Maiduguri in northern Nigeria and Ughelli in southern Nigeria dispose of their waste in open dumps. Indiscriminate disposal of waste has also resulted in the preponderance of toxic heavy metals in agricultural soils and consequent bioaccumulation in plants as well as groundwater contamination. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation of this research is municipal waste management authorities do not have relevant data. Hence, there was heavy reliance on published materials. The status of waste management in Nigeria is very deplorable and therefore poses serious threats to public and environmental health. There is urgent need for both government and individuals to adopt holistic and sustainable waste management strategies in order to safeguard public/environmental health. Practical implications – Findings from this paper can form a veritable resource for the formulation and implementation of sustainable municipal solid waste management framework and strategies in Nigeria. Originality/value – While most studies on municipal solid waste management in Nigeria are focussed on selected cities of interest, this particular study cuts across most cities of Nigeria in order to present a broader and holistic view of municipal solid waste management in Nigeria. The paper has also unraveled core municipal solid waste management challenges facing Nigerian cities.

Solid waste management problem has been a subject of great concern in developing nations because it has remained intractable mainly due to absence of quantitative data for its planning and management. This study examines seasonal variation in household solid waste generation in Mubi, Northern Nigeria because households are the main generators of solid waste since the country is not sufficiently industrial. Data was collected through observation and measurement of 603 systematically selected household from 30 wards that make up Mubi metropolis, and data generated was summarized using descriptive statistical measures. Results show that waste generated from households (wet and dry season) are mainly ashes, garbage, rubbish (paper and carton) plastic/polythene bags and metallic materials. The mean waste generation rate of a household is 2.7kg/day in wet season and 3.1kg in dry season. The calculated standard deviation for wet season is 1.6kg/household/day and dry season is 1.4kg/household/day, and the coefficient of variation is 59% and 45% in the same order.The result of the student t-test shows that there is a slight variation in the volume and rate of wastes generated in wet season being less than that of dry season. This variation can be attributed to greater agricultural resource utilization resulting from crop harvest with on-set of the dry season with reciprocal waste generation, as well as the increase in the purchasing power of residents due from proceeds of crop sales at that time among others factors. The study recommends the use of the data base created by Adamawa State Environmental protection Agency (ADSEPA) and private waste management agencies, for effective planning for municipal solid waste management in the area. An increase in the provision of waste collection, storage and disposal facilities particularly in the wet season by waste management agencies should be imminent.

Urbanisation is a growing issue in Longleng. So are the consequent solid waste generation and its management challenges. Population growth has a positive impact on urbanization process. This article is intended to explain the common problems facing public services today and the challenges faced by both the urban planners and the government. The paper reviews an overview of solid waste management generation in urban Longleng. Solid waste management which is already an immense task in urban Longleng is going to be more difficult with the expansion of urbanization, increase in consumerism and changing life style. The result shows that residential (59.5%), commercial (20%), institutional (16%), biomedical wastes (0.30%), construction and demolition (4.2%) contribute to solid waste generation. The current practices of dumping waste materials in urban areas have shaped serious environmental and public problems. Financial resources constraints, institutional policies weaknesses, and public indifference towards solid waste have made this situation worse. This research article evaluates the current practices prevalent to deal with this solid waste and problems associated with it. It also provides the measures to deal with this waste in a healthy and environmental manner so that it may prove a resource instead of waste. The results of this study will be of immense benefit for urban-related studies in small towns as well as for the urban planners in the district.
