This paper presents a comparative study of two indirect solution representations, a generative and an ontogenic one, on a set of well-known 2D truss design problems. The generative representation encodes the parameters of a trusses design as a mapping from a 2D space. The ontogenic representation encodes truss design parameters as a local truss transformation iterated several times, starting from a trivial initial truss. Both representations are tested with a naive evolution strategy based optimization scheme, as well as the state of the art HyperNEAT approach. We focus both on the best objective value obtained and the computational cost to reach a given level of optimality. The study shows that the two solution representations behave very differently. For experimental settings with equal complexity, with the same optimization scheme and settings, the generative representation provides results which are far from optimal, whereas the ontogenic representation delivers near-optimal solutions. The ontogenic representation is also much less computationally expensive than a direct representation until very close to the global optimum. The study questions the scalability of the generative representations, while the results for the ontogenic representation display much better scalability.

Abstract Topology optimization by optimally distributing materials in a given domain requires gradient-free optimizers to solve highly complicated problems. However, with hundreds of design variables or more involved, solving such problems would require millions of Finite Element Method (FEM) calculations whose computational cost is huge and impractical. Here we report a Self-directed Online Learning Optimization (SOLO) which integrates Deep Neural Network (DNN) with FEM calculations. A DNN learns and substitutes the objective as a function of design variables. A small number of training data is generated dynamically based on the DNN's prediction of the global optimum. The DNN adapts to the new training data and gives better prediction in the region of interest until convergence. Our algorithm was tested by compliance minimization problems and fluid-structure optimization problems. It reduced the computational time by 2 ~ 5 orders of magnitude compared with directly using heuristic methods, and outperformed all state-of-the-art algorithms tested in our experiments. This approach enables solving large multi-dimensional optimization problems.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems are of great interest, due to their applicability in science and engineering. However, the coupling between large fluid domains and small moving solid walls presents numerous numerical difficulties and, in some configurations, where the thickness of the solid wall can be neglected, one can consider membrane models, which are derived from the Koiter shell equations with a reduction of the computational cost of the algorithm. With this assumption, the FSI simulation is reduced to the fluid equations on a moving mesh together with a Robin boundary condition that is imposed on the moving solid surface. In this manuscript, we are interested in the study of inverse FSI problems that aim to achieve an objective by changing some design parameters, such as forces, boundary conditions, or geometrical domain shapes. We study the inverse FSI membrane model by using an optimal control approach that is based on Lagrange multipliers and adjoint variables. In particular, we propose a pressure boundary optimal control with the purpose to control the solid deformation by changing the pressure on a fluid boundary. We report the results of some numerical tests for two-dimensional domains to demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of our method.

Proper plant leaf disease (PLD) detection is challenging in complex backgrounds and under different capture conditions. For this reason, initially, modified adaptive centroid-based segmentation (ACS) is used to trace the proper region of interest (ROI). Automatic initialization of the number of clusters (K) using modified ACS before recognition increases tracing ROI’s scalability even for symmetrical features in various plants. Besides, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based PLD recognition models achieve adequate accuracy to some extent. However, memory requirements (large-scaled parameters) and the high computational cost of CNN-based PLD models are burning issues for the memory restricted mobile and IoT-based devices. Therefore, after tracing ROIs, three proposed depth-wise separable convolutional PLD (DSCPLD) models, such as segmented modified DSCPLD (S-modified MobileNet), segmented reduced DSCPLD (S-reduced MobileNet), and segmented extended DSCPLD (S-extended MobileNet), are utilized to represent the constructive trade-off among accuracy, model size, and computational latency. Moreover, we have compared our proposed DSCPLD recognition models with state-of-the-art models, such as MobileNet, VGG16, VGG19, and AlexNet. Among segmented-based DSCPLD models, S-modified MobileNet achieves the best accuracy of 99.55% and F1-sore of 97.07%. Besides, we have simulated our DSCPLD models using both full plant leaf images and segmented plant leaf images and conclude that, after using modified ACS, all models increase their accuracy and F1-score. Furthermore, a new plant leaf dataset containing 6580 images of eight plants was used to experiment with several depth-wise separable convolution models.

Evolution strategies (ES) are a family of strong stochastic methods for global optimization and have proved their capability in avoiding local optima more than other optimization methods. Many researchers have investigated different versions of the original evolution strategy with good results in a variety of optimization problems. However, the convergence rate of the algorithm to the global optimum stays asymptotic. In order to accelerate the convergence rate, a hybrid approach is proposed using the nonlinear simplex method (Nelder-Mead) and an adaptive scheme to control the local search application, and the authors demonstrate that such combination yields significantly better convergence. The new proposed method has been tested on 15 complex benchmark functions and applied to the bi-objective portfolio optimization problem and compared with other state-of-the-art techniques. Experimental results show that the performance is improved by this hybridization in terms of solution eminence and strong convergence.

Abstract The aim of this study is to explore the possibility of matching a cycle performance model to public data on a state-of-the-art commercial aircraft engine (GEnx-1B). The study is focused on obtaining valuable information on figure of merits for the technology level of the low-pressure system and associated uncertainties. It is therefore directed more specifically towards the fan and low-pressure turbine efficiencies, the Mach number at the fan-face, the distribution of power between the core and the bypass stream as well as the fan pressure ratio. Available cycle performance data have been extracted from the engine emission databank provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), type certificate datasheets from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as well as publicly available data from engine manufacturer. Uncertainties in the available source data are estimated and randomly sampled to generate inputs for a model matching procedure. The results show that fuel performance can be estimated with some degree of confidence. However, the study also indicates that a high degree of uncertainty is expected in the prediction of key low-pressure system performance metrics, when relying solely on publicly available data. This outcome highlights the importance of statistic-based methods as a support tool for the inverse design procedures. It also provides a better understanding on the limitations of conventional thermodynamic matching procedures, and the need to complement with methods that take into account conceptual design, cost and fuel burn.

In engineering design, uncertainty is inevitable and can cause a significant deviation in the performance of a system. Uncertainty in input parameters can be categorized into two groups: aleatory and epistemic uncertainty. The work presented here is focused on aleatory uncertainty, which can cause natural, unpredictable and uncontrollable variations in performance of the system under study. Such uncertainty can be quantified using statistical methods, but the main obstacle is often the computational cost, because the representative model is typically highly non-linear and complex. Therefore, it is necessary to have a robust tool that can perform the uncertainty propagation with as few evaluations as possible. In the last few years, different methodologies for uncertainty propagation and quantification have been proposed. The focus of this study is to evaluate four different methods to demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of each approach. The first method considered is Monte Carlo simulation, a sampling method that can give high accuracy but needs a relatively large computational effort. The second method is Polynomial Chaos, an approximated method where the probabilistic parameters of the response function are modelled with orthogonal polynomials. The third method considered is Mid-range Approximation Method. This approach is based on the assembly of multiple meta-models into one model to perform optimization under uncertainty. The fourth method is the application of the first two methods not directly to the model but to a response surface representing the model of the simulation, to decrease computational cost. All these methods have been applied to a set of analytical test functions and engineering test cases. Relevant aspects of the engineering design and analysis such as high number of stochastic variables and optimised design problem with and without stochastic design parameters were assessed. Polynomial Chaos emerges as the most promising methodology, and was then applied to a turbomachinery test case based on a thermal analysis of a high-pressure turbine disk.

An optimization approach is derived from typical design problems of hybrid material structures, which provides the engineer with optimal designs. Complex geometries, different materials and manufacturing aspects are handled as design parameters using a genetic algorithm. To take qualitative information into account, fuzzy rule based systems are utilized in order to consider all relevant aspects in the optimization problem. This paper shows results for optimization tasks on component and structural level.

Approximation of the index for assessing ship sea-keeping performance on the basis of ship design parameters This paper presents a new approach which makes it possible to take into account seakeeping qualities of ship in the preliminary stage of its design. The presented concept is based on representing ship's behaviour in waves by means of the so called operational effectiveness index. Presented values of the index were calculated for a broad range of design parameters. On this basis were elaborated analytical functions which approximate the index depending on ship design parameters. Also, example approximations of the index calculated by using artificial neural networks, are attached. The presented approach may find application to ship preliminary design problems as well as in ship service stage to assess sea-keeping performance of a ship before its departure to sea.

Abstract This paper gives an overview of a system which eliminates infeasible designs from engineering design problems dominated by multiple sources of uncertainty. It outlines methods for representing constraints on sets of values for design parameters using quantified relations, a special class of predicate logic expressions which express some of the causal information inherent in engineering systems. The paper extends constraint satisfaction techniques and describes elimination algorithms that operate on quantified relations and catalogs of toleranced or adjustable parts. It demonstrates the utility of these tools on a simple electronic circuit, and describes their implementation and test in a prototype software tool.
