Abstract On Zeno Beach there are infinitely many grains of sand, each half the size of the last. Supposing Aristotle denied the possibility of Zeno Beach, did he have a good argument for the denial? Three arguments, each of ancient origin, are examined: (1) the beach would be infinitely large; (2) the beach would be impossible to walk across; (3) the beach would contain a part equal to the whole, whereas parts must be lesser. It is attempted to show that none of these arguments was Aristotle’s. Indeed, perhaps Aristotle’s finitism applied to magnitude only, not plurality.

Two scientists and a philosopher aim to show how science both enriches and is enriched by Christian faith. The text is written around four themes: 1. God is a being to be known, not a hypothesis to be tested; 2. We set a high bar on what constitutes good argument; 3. Uncertainty is OK; 4. We are allowed to open up the window that the natural world offers us. This is not a work of apologetics. Rather, the text takes an overview of various themes and gives reactions and responses, intended to place science correctly as a valued component of the life of faith. The difference between philosophical analysis and theological reflection is expounded. Questions of human identity are addressed from philosophy, computer science, quantum physics, evolutionary biology and theological reflection. Contemporary physics reveals the subtle and open nature of physical existence, and offers lessons in how to learn and how to live with incomplete knowledge. The nature and role of miracles is considered. The ‘argument from design’ is critiqued, especially arguments from fine-tuning. Logical derivation from impersonal facts is not an appropriate route to a relationship of mutual trust. Mainstream evolutionary biology is assessed to be a valuable component of our understanding, but no exploratory process can itself fully account for the nature of what is discovered. To engage deeply in science is to seek truth and to seek a better future; it is also an activity of appreciation, as one may appreciate a work of art.

AbstractHumans are pure mental substances, that is essentially souls, who have a rich mental life of sensations, thoughts, intentions, and other pure mental events, largely caused by and sometimes causing events in their brains and so in their bodies. God has reason to create humans because humans have a kind of goodness, the ability to choose between good and evil, which God himself does not have. The existence of these causal connections between mental events and brain events requires an enormous number of separate psychophysical laws. It is most improbable that there would be such laws if God had not made them. Each soul has a thisness; it is the particular soul it is quite independently of its mental properties and bodily connections. So no scientific law, concerned only with relations between substances in virtue of their universal properties, could explain why God created this soul rather than that possible soul, and connected it to this body. Yet a rational person often has to choose between equally good alternatives on non-rational grounds; and so there is nothing puzzling about God choosing to create this soul rather than that possible soul. Hence the existence of souls provides a good argument for the existence of God.

My main complaint about Dworkin's papers on equality was that he had not said much by way of arguing for it. His intriguing response to this request provides a good start, and I shall confine this brief, further comment to what he says on that basic subject. Space considerations, alas, require me to ignore the other parts of his discussion (most of them well-taken, I should say in passing).Dworkin distinguishes what he calls the “abstract egalitarian thesis” from his particular version of equalitarianism, equality of resources. His strategy is to argue, first, that the latter is the best realization or version of the former, and then to argue for the general thesis itself. In my comments, I shall reverse this order, however, for reasons that will be clear as we proceed.1. The Abstract Egalitarian ThesisDworkin states this as follows: “From the standpoint of politics, the interests of the members of the community matter, and matter equally.” (24) The statement is intended to be abstract in the sense that it would “embrace various competing conceptions of equality,” so that in principle we can divide the discussion the way Dworkin has done into the two questions, “Should we accept equality as a principle at all?” and “What is the best version of equality, at what we might call the constitutional level?” But can we really do this? I am not entirely clear that we can. In order to appreciate the difficulty here, at any rate, consider Dworkin's suggestion that ”in order to sharpen the question” – the question whether to accept equality as a principle at all, that is –“I ask you to suppose that the abstract egalitarian principle does provide a good argument for subsidized medicine…” Now, some might think that such a program is paradigm case of what ought to be rejected at the public level, and yet his reasons for such rejection might very well be based on a principle that its proponent would regard as abstractly egalitarian.

In this article, I outline a strategy for challenging J.L. Schellenberg’s hiddenness argument, and specifically the premise within the argument that asserts the existence of what Schellenberg calls nonresistant nonbelief.  Drawing on some of the philosophical resources of skeptical theism, I show how this premise is based on a particular “noseeum assumption”—what I call Schellenberg’s Noseeum Assumption—that underwrites a particular “noseeum argument.” This assumption is that, regarding putative nonresistant nonbelievers, more likely than not we’d detect these nonbelievers’ resistance toward God if there were any.  I give reasons for thinking that it is not more reasonable to affirm than to refrain from affirming Schellenberg’s Noseeum Assumption, and so reason to think that the hiddenness argument is not a good argument for atheism.  I also defend the strategy I outline against several objections.

If you have ever contracted laryngitis, you know the value of your voice. You feel fine. You are not contagious. You have much to do. You cannot make a good argument for staying home. Yet teaching without a healthy voice can be hard, hard work. Our voice is our most precious instrument. Do we care for it as if that is true? These five suggestions can help you maintain a healthy voice. 1. Balance of breath and muscle. When vocal sound production is balanced with muscle and breath, we are generally using our voice properly. When more muscle than breath is used, a forced sound causes undue stress on our vocal folds, often resulting in a raspy sound. Support your voice with breath energy to help maintain healthy vocal production. 2. Hydration. Talking for lengthy amounts of time causes us to lose moisture through our breath. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Stay hydrated throughout the day. 3. Avoid touching your face. Our hands are often the germiest parts of our bodies. To maintain a healthy voice, avoid touch­ing your face, especially during cold and flu season. 4. Vary your vocal expression. Variety in pitch, pace, and vol­ume is good for our voices and good for our listeners. Vary the pitch of your voice by shifting between higher and lower tones. Speed up and slow down the pace of your speaking. Speak at louder and quieter volumes to help students listen. 5. Lift your voice. Speaking at the lower part of your vocal range, especially if you are projecting loudly to a group, can cause vocal difficulties similar to a callus on your vocal folds. For the health of your voice, lift it to a medium high range (say “mm- hm” as an agreement and stay at the “hm” level) and speak using plenty of breath energy. The louder we talk, the less students need or want to listen! Try speaking normally rather than “talking over” noisy students; they will learn to respond. In physical education, music ensembles, and other large classes, a habit of shout- speaking can develop and derail your vocal health.

Cartesian mind–body dualism is widely thought to have been simply refuted by sound argument. This chapter maintains that the case against dualism is very weak. There is no very good argument for materialism, and the objections to dualism are convincing only to materialists. In particular, the dreaded Interaction problem is not notably hard for a committed dualist to handle; and the other standard objections simply presuppose a third-person perspective that would not be tolerated by the dualist in the first place. Materialism is not significantly better supported than dualism. In the process, the chapter sets out a number of sociophilosophical observations that explain our impression that dualism has been simply shown to be untenable. The sociophilosophical observations, more generally, explain how an illusion is created to the effect that purely philosophical reasoning can either prove or refute a significant doctrine or claim.

AbstractDuring the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, open science has become central to experimental, public health, and clinical responses across the globe. Open science (OS) is described as an open commons, in which a right to science renders all possible scientific data for everyone to access and use. In this common space, capitalist platforms now provide many essential services and are taking the lead in public health activities. These neoliberal businesses, however, have a problematic role in the capture of public goods. This paper argues that the open commons is a community of rights, consisting of people and institutions whose interests mutually support the public good. If OS is a cornerstone of public health, then reaffirming the public good is its overriding purpose, and unethical platforms ought to be excluded from the commons and its benefits.

I am one of a large team studying an X-ray flux limited sample of 35 AGN, at radio (Unger et al 1987 MNRAS 228 521), IR (Ward et al 1987 ApJ 315 74 and Carleton et al 1987 ApJ 318 595), optical-UV (Boisson et al in preparation), and X-ray (Turner PhD thesis, Leicester) wavelengths. A gap in the data which we have just started to fill is the millimetre region. (Lawrence, Ward, Elvis, Robson, Smith, Duncan, and Rowan-Robinson). In Jan/Feb 1988 we made measurements of twelve objects at 800 and 1100 micron, using the ROE/QMC bolometer, UKT14, on the new UK/Dutch/Canadian facility on Mauna Kea, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, reaching 1 sigma sensitivity of ∼15–20 mJy, an order of magnitude improvement over previous data. The four radio loud objects measured were easily detected, as expected. These all have a strong blazar component, showing smooth but curved spectra over many decades, possibly log-Gaussian in form (Landau et al 1986 ApJ 308 78), or alternatively explicable by a small number of power-law components (Robson et al 1988 MNRAS in press). In any case, other evidence points to non-thermal radiation by a relativistically moving feature (high polarization, strong variability, superluminal motion). Eight radio quiet objects were measured, and upper limits only found, except for a possible four sigma detection of N2992. In all cases, the mm limits are far below the 100 micron IRAS fluxes. In four of the nearest objects, this is not too surprising, as fluxes are rising steeply throughout 12 to 100 micron, a sign that the IRAS data is dominated by cool interstellar dust emission (“cirrus”) from the discs of the parent galaxies. However we can also say that any postulated power law component of spectral index ∼1 dominating the near-IR, must become self-absorbed around ∼200 micron if the mm limits are not to be exceeded. Four rather more interesting objects are shown in Fig. 1. Again, any underlying power-law component must be self-absorbed by ∼100 micron, but is not clear that such a power-law is needed. N5506 and IC4329A have falling optical energy distributions, and large H α/Hβ ratios; on the other hand, the IR continuum lies well above the X-ray level, so there is good argument for absorption and re-radiation by dust. N4151, while flat through the near-IR-optical, has a large hump centred at ∼25 micron. Particularly important here are further new measurements by Engargiola et al (1987, ApJ in press),and Edelson et al (1988, preprint) which show the energy distribution to be falling so steeply from 155 to 438 micron that self-absorbed synchrotron is ruled out in this region. In fact, the whole energy distribution from mm to UV can be modelled without a power law at all, as shown in Fig 2. This uses a starburst component (from Rowan-Robinson and Crawford 1988, MNRAS in press), hot dust represented by three greybodies at 200K, 500K, and 1000K, starlight from a nuclear cusp, and a blackbody at 30,000K. Even MKN590, which at first sight looks like a power-law, can be modelled by similar components (Fig. 3).

IntroductionTo determine the influence of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden on functional outcome, rate of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), and procedural success in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treated by mechanical thrombectomy (MT) with current stentriever/aspiration devices.MethodsPatients with AIS due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) from the Thrombectomie des Artères Cérébrales (THRACE) trial and prospective cohorts from 2 academic comprehensive stroke centers treated with MT were pooled and retrospectively analyzed. WMH volumes were obtained by semiautomated planimetric segmentation and tested in association with the rate of favorable outcome (90-day functional independence), substantial recanalization after MT, and sICH.ResultsA total of 496 participants were included between 2015 and 2018 (50% female, mean age 68.1 ± 15.0 years). Overall, 434 (88%) patients presented with detectable WMH (mean ± SD 4.93 ± 7.7). Patients demonstrated increasingly worse outcomes with increasing WMH volumes (odds ratio [aOR]1.05 per 1-cm3 increase for unfavorable outcome, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.06, p = 0.014). Fifty-seven percent of patients in the first quartile of WMH volume vs 28% in the fourth quartile demonstrated favorable outcome (p < 0.001). WMH severity was not associated with sICH rate (aOR 0.99, 95% CI 0.93–1.04, p = 0.66), nor did it influence recanalization success (aOR 0.99, 95% CI 0.96–1.02, p = 0.84).ConclusionOur study provides evidence that in patients with AIS due to LVO and high burden of WMH as assessed by pretreatment MRI, the safety and efficacy profiles of MT are similar to those in patients with lower WMH burden and confirms that they are at higher risk of unfavorable outcome. Because more than a quarter of patients in the highest WMH quartile experienced favorable 3 months outcome, WMH burden may not be a good argument to deny MT.ClinicalTrials.gov IdentifierNCT01062698.
