Aquatic fungi growing on the spawn of certain amphibians

AbstractThe mycoflora developing on the spawn of nine species of amphibians was investigated under laboratory conditions. Fifty-two zoosporic fungus species were found to grow on the spawn investigated, including 6 chytridiomycetes, 1 hyphochytriomycete, 44 oomycetes and 1 zygomycete fungus. Out of these 52 species, 23 are known as parasites or necrotrophs of fish. Five fungus species were recorded for the first time from Poland.

The presence of 65 zoosporic fungi species was noted in the water obtained from melting ice from five water (3 ponds and 2 rivers). In the water of the all basins the number of zoosporic fungus species decreases along with the increasing chemical loading (more eutrophic water). Out of these 65 species, 18 are known as necrotrophs of fish. The following fungi were recorded for the first time from Poland: <em>Achlya conspicua</em>, <em>Apodachlyella completa</em>, <em>Pythiomorpha undulata</em>, <em>Pythium butleri</em>, <em>Pythium carolinianum</em>, <em>Pythium gracile</em>, <em>Pythium imperfectum</em>, <em>Pythium indicum</em>, <em>Pythium irregulare</em>, <em>Pythium myriotylum</em>, <em>Pythium papillatum</em>, <em>Pythium pyrilobum</em> and <em>Pythium rostratum</em>.

The development of lonchaeid flies of the genus Earomyia Zetterstedt, 1842 (Diptera: Lochaeidae) in Veratrum album L. stems is reported for the first time. Larvae were collected in July 2015 in Serbia (Crni Vrh) in mountains at 988 m a.s.l. from inside a blackened decaying part of the stem at a point 1/3 from the apex. No other insects were discovered in the same part of stem. Emergence of adult E. crystallophila (Becker, 1895) occurred under laboratory conditions in January 2016. The larva and puparia are described for the first time.

Fifteen species of Melaleuca and two species of Callistemon from the field were examined to determine whether they accumulated nitrogen-containing compatible solutes and, if so, which. In addition to L-proline, N-methyl-L-proline (MP) (isolated for the first time from plants), trans-4-hydroxy-N-methyl- L-proline (MHP), and N, N'-dimethyl-trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline (DHP) were found in various combinations in the 15 Melaleuca species. M. lanceolata seedlings were subjected to water or salinity stress and M. uncinata to water stress under laboratory conditions. In both species significant reductions in leaf water potential (Ψw), osmotic potential (Ψs), turgor potential (Ψp), and relative water content (RWC) were observed in response to water stress. Salinised M. lanceolata plants showed considerable osmotic adjustment and maintained Ψp comparable to that of control plants; salinity, however, decreased RWC. In response to the imposed stresses under laboratory conditions, proline and MHP levels in M. lanceolata, and MHP and DHP levels in M. uncinata, increased. In addition to possible protective or osmotic roles in vivo, these proline analogues may be useful in chemotaxonomic investigations of Melaleuca species.

The mature larva of Platydracus latebricola (Gravenhorst, 1806) is described for the first time and the larva and pupa of Staphylinus erythropterus Linné, 1758 are redescribed. Illustrations of structural features are provided. The combination of characters that allow for distinguishing the known mature larvae of Platydracus, and larvae and pupae of Staphylinus from closely related genera within tribe Staphylinini are given. The mature larvae of Platydracus and Staphylinus are compared and the generic status of the former is confirmed. Life history data under laboratory conditions of S. erythropterus are provided. Two larval instars in this species, a state unique within the tribe Staphylinini was reported.

In this work, we describe for the first time and under laboratory conditions, the behaviors related to social carrying and defensive strategies during colony emigration in the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens. Once colonies were laid on a tray under suboptimal conditions, groups of workers aggregated all over the body surface of the queen and brood, with mandibles half open and legs widely open in a ‘entangle’ formation. Queens were the first caste to be reallocated, followed respectively by the transportation of brood, newly-emerged workers, and pieces of fungus garden to the new nesting site. Contrary to what have been reported to the Myrmicinae species, adult transport followed a stereotyped sequence of acts involving approach, seize and transportation of newly-emerged workers to new target areas. Our results suggest that, in front of rapid unfavorable changes, leaf-cutting ants are capable of reorganize the nest in order to protect their members and resources.

The nesting activity, life cycle, and brood ball morphometry of the dung beetle Oniticellus cinctus (Fabricius, 1775) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were studied under laboratory conditions for the first time in India.  The females made a brood chamber within the dung mass provided, wherein they made brood balls to lay eggs.  The life cycle includes egg, larva (three instars), pupa, and adult stages.  The total duration for the development was about one month.  The study found that there was a significant difference present in the brood ball diameter (except in the first and second instars) and brood ball weight (except in the second instar and pupa) of the six life cycle stages.  It was also found that brood ball weight and diameter have a significant positive correlation as well as a linear relationship.

The research of parasitoid calcidids associated with the cinopid Neuroterus quercusbaccarum L. (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae) was performed in the forest ridges of the northern and central districts of the Republic of Moldova during the years 2016-2018. In total, more than 1000 gallons were collected, of which eights pecies of entomophagus included in 7 genres and 6 families were obtained under laboratory conditions: Pteromalidae – Mesopolobus tibialis Westw., M. Fasciiventris Westw.; Eupelmidae – Eupelmus fulvipes Förster, Eulophidae – Olynx gallarum L., Tetrastichus sp., Ormyridae – Ormyrus diffinis Fonsc., Eurytomidae – Eudecatoma biguttata Swed.; Torymidae – Torymus flavipes Walker. In the parasitoid complex with a higher percentage of parasites, threes pecies were found: Torymus flavipes Walker (Chalcidoidea, Torymidae), Mesopolobus tibialis Westw., M. Fasciiventris Westw. (Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae). The lowest percentage of parasites was recorded in Tetrastichus sp. (Chalcidoidea, Eulophidae). Torymus flavipes Walker iscited as a new species for Moldova’s fauna. For the first time there has been infestation of this host with parasitoids: Mesopolobus fasciiventris Westw. (Pteromalidae), Ormyrus diffinis Fonsc. (Ormyridae), Eudecatoma biguttataSwed. (Eurytomidae), Eupelmus fulvipes Förster (Eupelmidae); Tetrastichus sp. (Eulophidae), Torymus flavipes Walker (Torymidae).

Grains of four naked oat varieties (Amant, Maczo, Polar and Siwek) and one hulled oat variety (Kozak) from three consecutive years (2018, 2019 and 2020), grown under three different nitrogen fertilization regimes (40, 60 and 80 kg of nitrogen per hectare) were malted and then mashed in the laboratory conditions for the first time; this was carried out to determine whether hulled and naked oat grains possess favourable properties as a raw material for the production of malt. Most of the analysed samples possess a favourable Kolbach index (39.06–46.82%), good extractivity (81.07–81.97%) and rather good saccharification time (13.33–26.67 min); however, some disadvantages of the produced malts could be pointed out. During the congress mashing, the filtration time of the worts produced from the hulled and naked oat malts was long (96.67–110 min) and the wort volume was not satisfactory (155–228.53 mL). Subsequent studies over oat malting and mashing need to be performed to maximize oat potential as the raw material for the production of the malt.

For the first time eggs, larvae and pupae obtained by rearing are described for Astrapaeus, a monotypic West Palearctic rove beetle genus of a puzzling phylogenetic position within the megadiverse tribe Staphylinini. Morphology of the immature stages of Astrapaeus ulmi is compared to that of other members of the tribe and discussed in a phylogenetic context. Contrary to conventional systematics and in accordance with recently developed phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphology of adults, larval morphology supports the non-Quediina affiliation of Astrapaeus. Eggs and pupae provided fewer characters with putative phylogenetic signal. Under laboratory conditions, a peculiar preference for isopod prey was observed for A. ulmi. However, this could not be evaluated in an evolutionary context because of the lack of data on the diet of this and related taxa in nature.
