The aim of the study was to investigate the number of different groups of microorganisms in soil samples from sites of feed and nesting activity of Larus dominicanus (Galindez Island, the maritime Antarctic) and to characterize the physiological and biochemical properties of isolated microorganisms. Methods. In the work standard microbiological and biochemical research methods were used (cultural, microscopy methods, determination of enzymatic activity). Genomic DNA was isolated by soft lysis. The 16 S rRNA gene was amplified using universal primers 27F and 1492R. Identification of isolates was performed based on the determination of the 16 S rRNA gene sequence, physiological and biochemical properties. Results. The number of microorganisms of different groups in soil samples from sites of food and nesting activity of Larus dominicanus (Galindez Island, the maritime Antarctic) was established. 74 isolates of bacteria were isolated. Isolate 2U-K-37, that was isolated from upper layer of soil, and isolate 2B-K-54, that was isolated from a depth of 2–5 cm, were characterized by amylase, lipase, phospholipase, protease activities, the ability to form exopolysaccharides.They were identified by sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene, physiological and biochemical properties as Pedobacter sp. 2U-K-37 and Pseudarthrobacter sp. 2B-K-54. In the soil samples from sites of feed and nesting activity of Larus dominicanus microorganisms that metabolize nitrogen of organic compounds were the most numerous. Oligotrophic microorganisms and microorganisms that metabolize nitrogen of inorganic compounds were less numerous. The number of microorganisms of groups in the samples from the soil surface and lower layers differed statistically significant. Isolated and identified obligate psychrophilic strain Pedobacter sp. 2U-K-37 and psychrotolerant strain Pseudarthrobacter sp. 2B-K-54 are moderate halophiles that are able to hydrolyze starch, gelatin, tween-20 and synthesize exopolysaccharides.

AbstractClimate-induced environmental changes are profoundly impacting marine ecosystems and altering species distribution worldwide. Migratory organisms, including sea turtles, are expected to be particularly sensitive to these variations. Here, we studied changes in the size structure and reproductive activity of loggerhead turtles in the French Mediterranean over 30 years. Overall, there was a significant increase in the size of observed loggerheads between 1990 and 2020. However, this increase was only significant during the breeding/nesting season (May to September) and was driven by the increased presence of adults. Furthermore, nesting activity along the French coast was detected in 2002 for the first time in more than 50 years, and has become frequent after 2014, with nests discovered every year. The number of eggs laid as well as incubation duration and success varied among sites but fell within the range reported at established Mediterranean nesting sites. These observations, along with recent reports of breeding activity and evidence of significant sea surface warming, suggest that the north-western Mediterranean basin has become increasingly suitable to loggerhead turtles. We postulate that this range expansion is the result of climate change and propose that emerging nesting activity in France should be closely monitored and guarded against human activities.

In marine turtles, sex is determined during a precise period during incubation: males are produced at lower temperatures and females at higher temperatures, a phenomenon called temperature-dependent sex determination. Nest temperature depends on many factors, including solar radiation. Albedo is the measure of the proportion of reflected solar radiation, and in terms of sand color, black sand absorbs the most energy, while white sand reflects more solar radiation. Based on this observation, darker sand beaches with higher temperatures should produce more females. As marine turtles show a high degree of philopatry, including natal homing, dark beaches should also produce more female hatchlings that return to nest when mature. When sand color is heterogeneous in a region, we hypothesize that darker beaches would have the most nests. Nevertheless, the high incubation temperature on beaches with a low albedo may result in low hatching success. Using Google Earth images and the SWOT database of nesting olive ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) in the Pacific coast of Mexico and Central America, we modeled sand color and nesting activity to test the hypothesis that darker beaches host larger concentrations of females because of feminization on darker beaches and female philopatry. We found the opposite result: the lower hatching success at beaches with a lower albedo could be the main driver of nesting activity heterogeneity for olive ridleys in Central America.

Oregon’s two native freshwater turtle species, Chrysemys picta bellii (Western painted turtle) and Actinemys marmorata (Northwestern pond turtle), have seen significantly reduced population sizes since the founding of Portland in 1845, with estimates of up to 90% for A. marmorata. This project examined turtle nesting activity at 25 sites across a range of turtle populations and habitats around the Lower Willamette River Basin. All discovered turtle nesting activity was found in areas of high solar exposure. We found 93% of over 400 nest attempts to have been depredated across the 25 sites, well above most other reported rates. At several sites, many aborted nest attempts were found atop gravel roadbeds, indicating that lack of appropriate substrate is potentially limiting nesting success. The presence of greater than five pedestrians per hour at turtle nesting areas was correlated with a substantial decrease in nesting attempts suggesting that management of recreational activities may play a role in the amount of nesting activity occurring. Hence, site-specific solutions, such as importing substrate, alteration of path locations or seasonal trail closures to lessen human foot traffic disturbance of turtle nesting attempts, are likely to improve recruitment rates of native turtles in the Lower Willamette Basin. Further studies that improve knowledge of population demographics, the impact of human activities on turtles, and habitat needs of juvenile turtles are needed to support long-term self-sustaining turtle populations.

The nesting activity of the loggerhead turtle along the coast of Calabria during five reproductive seasons (2016-2020) is presented. From May to August, survey methods were conducted using traditional observations on foot and utilizing additional innovative technologies, including electric fat bikes and drones. Monitoring was intensively focused on a key nesting area of approximately 40 km located on the southernmost Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria, and, for only the 2020 season, the area was extended an additional 40 km northeast. In the five nesting seasons, 419 female emergences were recorded, 192 of which were classified as nests. Overall, 65.1% (n = 125) of nests were found along the area regularly monitored in all nesting seasons. The maximum nesting activity was observed during July, and the mean nesting success was 45.8%. The average number of eggs for all seasons was 92.2 (n = 163; S.D.: ± 21.1; range: 39-160). The mean hatching and emergence success rates were 70.8% and 62.5%, respectively. The mean incubation period was 49 days (n = 122; S.D.: ± 5.4; range: 42-82). Considering previous data from the same area, our study shows an actual increase in nesting activity, probably due to the implementation of an effective monitoring method that includes the use of new technologies, which made it possible to expand the regularly monitored area, and a greater awareness campaign in recent years. Regarding the reproductive parameters, our data is similar to that reported for other Mediterranean nesting grounds.

Green sea turtles are one of the two species of marine turtles known to nest in the Maldives. The prevalent time of nesting seems to be inconsistent throughout the island nation. In this study, sea turtle nesting activity was monitored on the island of Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu in Baa Atoll over a period of 12 months. A total of 13 nests were confirmed with a median hatching success rate of 89.58% as ascertained by nest excavation. In one of the nests, a severely deformed hatchling with polycephaly, an opening in the neck area and a lordotic spine was found, and we investigated in detail with radiographic images and a necropsy. Our findings support the importance of consistent nesting activity and nest monitoring efforts in the country as a basis for conservation efforts.

Ants can provide pest biocontrol for coffee crops; however, this ecosystem service may decline in intensively managed plantations due to the loss of nesting resources. Considering how to increase the number of ants, we studied if they nest in different types of artificial substrates attached to coffee bushes both in shade-grown and sun-grown coffee plantations. Three independent tests were conducted at some coffee plantations in southwestern Colombia with the purpose of answering the following questions: 1) Do ants nest in artificial substrates made from recyclable materials? 2) Do the types of substrate (materials and configuration) and coffee management (shade-grown vs. sun-grown coffee) affect colonization rates, richness, and identity of colonizing ants? 3) Does time affect substrate colonization rates? Each experiment independently compared different substrate materials and designs, in both shade and sun-grown coffee. Results showed preference of one of the substrates offered and higher nesting rates in shade-grown plantations. Eight ant species were found nesting in artificial substrates, most of them being arboreal generalists. A higher number of ant species colonized substrates in shade-grown plantations; however, the effect was not statistically significant. Nesomyrmex asper and Crematogaster spp. were always found nesting in both types of plantation. There was a trend to increase nesting activity with time in shade-grown coffee but not in sun-grown coffee. Evidence supports that offering artificial substrates enhances arboreal ant nesting in coffee plantations.
