Rubia hangii, a new species of Rubia sect. Oligoneura from Guangxi Province, China, is described and illustrated. The placement of this species within Rubia is assessed based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis and morphological comparisons with related species. The new species is morphologically similar to R. siamensis and R. falciformis, but differs from the two taxa in having membranous to thin papery leaf blade, margins flat , slender petiole (< 1 mm wide), ovate-lanceolate stipule, triangular corolla lobes, fruit glabrous, with 1 ovule often aborted and 1 mericarp developed, rarely with 2 mericarps. Molecular phylogenetic analyses suggested that R. hangii is closely related to R. argyi and R. pallida. Rubia hangii can be easily distinguished from R. argyi and R. pallida based on leaf and stipule arrangement, leaf shape, number of principal veins, inflorescence position and flower shape.

Allium xinlongense from western Sichuan Province, China, is described as a new species. Its diagnostic morphological characters were confirmed to be valid by comparing them to those of related species, such as A. maowenense, A. chrysanthum, A. rude, A. xichuanense, A. chrysocephalum, and A. herderianum. Molecular phylogenetic analysis (combining ITS and rpL32-trnL markers) indicated that this new species is a member of Allium sect. Daghestanica. A comprehensive description of this new species is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

Gerhardtia sinensis, as a new species discovered from southern China, is described, illustrated and compared with morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species. Morphologically, it is characterized by its white to yellowish or partially pale yellow pileus with faint striae, subdistant to fairly distant lamellae with intervenose veins, and slightly verruculose basidiospores (4.7–)5.2–6.2(–6.6) × (2.5–)3.0–3.4(–3.8) μm in size. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the new species and related taxa are performed based on the sequences of nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS).

Abstract Background Hyoscyamus, the largest genus in the tribe Hyoscyameae, harbors more than 20 species. Although the monophyly of Hyoscyamus is supported by both morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies, the delimitation of Hyoscyamus has been hotly debated in different classifications. Here, we report a new species of Hyoscyamus (Solanaceae) from Henan Province, China, and discuss the delimitation of Hyoscyamus. Results This species is morphologically similar to the known species of Hyoscyamus and its close related genus Archihyoscyamus, but can be distinguished by corolla 2-lipped, adaxial lip 3-lobed and much longer than abaxial lips, tube slender at base, and stamens 5, inserted on inner side of disk, free, obviously unequal, and exceeding corolla. Phylogenetic analysis based on four chloroplast markers including rbcL, ndhF, trnC-psbM and trnL-trnF, strongly suggested that the new species was sister to a monophyletic group containing all species of Hyoscyamus and Archihyoscyamus previously described. Conclusions Both the morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses support the recognition of Hyoscyamus labiatus as a new species. Our study also showed that Archihyoscyamus should be a synonym of Hyoscyamus. The delimitation of Hyoscyamus is thus revised in our study.

Colletotrichum has numerous host range and distribution. Its species are important plant pathogens, endophytes and saprobes. Colletotrichum can cause regular or irregular depressions and necrotic lesions in the epidermal tissues of plants. During this research Colletotrichum specimens were collected from Mengyin County, Shandong Province, China. A multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS-1, ACT, TUB2, CAL and GS sequence data combined with morphology, revealed a new species and two known species, viz. C. mengyinense sp. nov., C. gloeosporioides and C. pandanicola, belonging to the C. gloeosporioides species complex. The new species is described and illustrated in this paper and compared with taxa in the C. gloeosporioides species complex.

Sorbus dolichofoliolatus (Rosaceae) sp. nov. from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on the collections deposited at the herbarium CDBI. The new species is similar to S. rehderiana in infructescence with sparsely rust-brown short hairs, fruit size, and glabrescent leaflets, but the former has longer and wider leaflets, persistent stipules and pinkish fruit color. A molecular phylogenetic analysis supports that the new species is distinguishable from related species in the genus.

Phytolacca exiensis, a new species of Phytolacca which was discovered from west of Hubei province, China, is discribed and illustrated in this paper. The placement of this new species is accessed based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS and one chloroplast regions (psbA-trnH) sequences together with mophorlogical comparison. This new species can be easily distinguished from other related species by its carpers connate and plants dioecious.

A new species of the genus Sovia Evans, 1949, viz. S. liuzihaoi Huang & Fan sp. nov. is described from Mt. Ailao, Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County, representing a remarkable geographically southward extension of this genus in Yunnan Province, Southwestern China. In general appearance S. liuzihaoi Huang & Fan sp. nov. resembles S. separata magna (Evans, 1932), but in our molecular phylogenetic analyses, this species is clustered with S. lii Xue, 2015. The adults and male genitalia of the new species and related species are illustrated.

Youngia zhengyiana, a new species of Youngia sect. Mesomeris (Asteraceae: Crepidinae) from Guizhou province of south China is described and illustrated. The placement of this species within Youngia is assessed based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS and on morphological comparisons with related species. The new species can be easily distinguished by morphology from the only species known to possess 5 florets, Y. szechuanica. The infrageneric classification and the recently debated circumscription of Youngia are discussed in the light of the nrITS phylogeny, which includes several species for the first time. Pseudoyoungia is confirmed as a congener of Youngia. The redefined Youngia is still non-monophyletic with Lapsanastrum nested within it.

Ophiocordyceps is the largest genus in the family Ophiocordicipitaceae, including many entomopathogenic species. In recent years, many species have been described in this genus, with a wide range of host insects. Entomopathogenic fungi include ecologically, economically and medicinally important species, but a large portion of their diversity remains to be discovered and described. In this study, a new species, Ophiocordyceps aphrophoridarum sp. nov, parasitising Aphrophoridae sp. (Hemiptera) is proposed from China, based on evidence from morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses. This species is characterised by fibrous, pigmented stromata, cylindrical asci and filiform ascospores. Compared to its closest relative, O. tricentri, the new species has wider perithecia and longer asci. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of a multilocus dataset (consisting of SSU, ITS, LSU, TEF1, RPB1 and RPB2) confirm its placement in Ophiocordyceps. Ophiocordyceps aphrophoridarum is morphologically described and illustrated with colour photographs. Morphological comparisons with closely-related species are also presented in tabulated format.

We compared Sedum formosanum with related species using morphological traits and molecular phylogenetic analysis of nrITS sequences. Morphological comparisons revealed that the plants historically treated as S. formosanum in the Danjo Islands of Japan had 4-merous flower; 8 stamens; narrow triangular sepals of equal size; horizontal carpels when matured; and an irregular branching form. These traits differed from those of S. formosanum in other regions, which has 5-merous flowers; 10 stamens, thick spatulate sepals of unequal size; erect carpels when matured; and a trichotomous branching form. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that plants known as S. formosanum in the Danjo Islands were sister group to S. tetractinum, which are endemic to China and belong to a different clade than S. formosanum, which are found in other regions. Based on the present morphological comparisons and phylogenetical analyses, we describe plants from the Danjo Islands as a new species, S. danjoense, which is distinct from S. formosanum.
