Scinax hayii was described in 1909 from the municipality of Petrópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Morphological variation and advertisement calls have been previously reported for other populations across the species distribution (Lutz 1973; Heyer et al. 1990; Cardoso & Andrade 1991; Pombal et al. 1995; Magrini et al. 2011; Abrunhosa et al. 2014). However, no information on calls are available from specimens recorded at the type locality, preventing the correct characterization of the species (Magrini et al. 2011). Here we describe the advertisement call and a second call type of S. hayii from Petrópolis, as a contribution towards a better understanding of the taxonomy of this species.

Redescription of the advertisement call of Brachycephalus tridactylus (Anura: Brachycephalidae). Miniaturized frogs of the genus Brachycephalus have restricted geographical distributions throughout the Atlantic Forest. Ecological data for most species are scarce and advertisement calls have been described for only 12 of the 36 known species, including B. tridactylus. The considerable duration of note length of the advertisement call of B. tridactylus has been mentioned in comparative studies of vocalizations in Brachycephalus. The single original recording of B. tridactylus, together with recordings made in March 2016 at the type locality, were analyzed to document any variation and redescribe the advertisement call of the species. In the recent recordings of B. tridactylus, the average length of the call is 50.8 s and the call is composed of 10–13 notes emitted at a note rate of 3.7–8.3 notes per min. The notes are isolated and composed of 1–3 pulses, with the note duration varying from 0.002–0.021 s. These values are not consistent with the original description of the call of B. tridactylus. The note duration is 89% shorter and the original description does not include notes with 1–3 pulses. The notes of B. tridactylus have few pulses, whereas those of B. ephippium have several. The advertisement call of B. tridactylus differs from that of B. albolineatus and B. mirissimus by having only isolated notes.

Here we describe a new species of the toad genus Amazophrynella (Bufonidae) from the south margin of the Amazon River in Santarém, state of Pará, Brazilian Amazonia. The new species can be diagnosed by (1) medium body size for the genus: adult females 19.5–20.4 mm SVL, adult males 13.0–14.5 mm SVL; (2) snout acuminate in lateral view; (3) Finger I larger and robust; (4) Finger I nearly equal in size than Finger II; (5) palmar tubercle rounded, covering ¼ of hand; (6) pigmented callus in Finger I in males; in life: (7) brown stain on throat and chest; (8) black dots on venter. Males emit two distinct advertisement calls: the call type 1 consists of a relatively long note (mean 0.248 s) with a mean dominant frequency of 3526 Hz. The call type 2 is arranged in bouts of 6 to 22 notes with mean dominant frequency of 3450 Hz and much shorter note durations (mean 0.034 s). In this study we also redescribe the advertisement call of A. minuta, which also emits a second call type.

Mussurana quimi is a species of Pseudoboini known from central, southeastern, and southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. We report the occurrence of this species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on two specimens from Santa Maria municipality. This report extends this species’ distribution about 950 km south from its type locality and 330 km south from the nearest previous locality record (Posadas, Argentina). It also represent new southernmost records for M. quimi. We also provide brief comments on coloration and morphological variation of this species as well as an updated distribution map.

The study of anuran advertisement calls is very significant for it is an important premating premating mechanism. Herein we redescribe the advertisement call of Aplastodiscus arildae from an area near type-locality and describe the advertisement call of A. weygoldti comparing them to previously described advertisement calls of species of the genus Aplastodiscus. Both advertisement calls are simple, non-modulated calls, very similar to each other, but significantly different in what matters to call duration. We describe the first distress call registered for the genus, the distress call of A. arildae, that does not have rigid form and was only recorded for one individual. Some general notes of the genus Aplastodiscus are given.

The fossorial snake Apostolepis christineae is an Elapomorphini species known only from a single specimen in Brazil. In this study, we report its occurrence to Bolivia, based on a male (BMNH 1907.10.31.62) from Puerto Suarez, Provincia German Busch, Departamento Santa Cruz, which was previously misidentified as Apostolepis vittata. This record extends the species distribution ca. 576 km west from its type locality. We also provide data on its morphological variation.

Abstract This study reports the mineralogical characterization of kaolin occurrences in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to identify new kaolinite and halloysite deposits. Samples were collected in 10 pegmatites with varying sizes for X-ray diffractometry, chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy studies. The results indicated that the kaolin occurrences were of weathered origin, wherein some places there were occurrences of tubular halloysite. Concerning the regolith stratigraphy, samples located in the saprock zone were found to contain kaolinite and/or halloysite contents from 0 to 10.1%, while those located in the saprolite zone contained kaolinite and/or halloysite contents from 16.3% to 34.9%. Kaolinite and/or halloysite-7Å were formed from plagioclase weathering instead of K-feldspar or mica, and the halloysite-7Å occurrence was related to samples in regions with a higher degree of weathering.

This article provides a quantitative description of flora specimens stored in the Jardim Botânico of Rio de Janeiro Herbarium that belongs to the Federal Conservation Units of Caatinga’s phytogeography domain. The Caatinga represents 11% of Brazilian territory and is, in South America, the largest and most biodiverse semi-arid tropical ecoregion, yet only 5% of its territory is covered by Federal Conservation Units, with few collections of flora samples. Thus, providing a georeferenced inventory of existing collections is essential for purposes of species distribution, environmental management and conservation. The aim of this data paper is to gauge, by means of geographic coordinates correction and retrieval of the flora specimens present in the RB Herbarium, the amount of specimen gatherings performed in the Federal Conservation Units belonging to the Caatinga domain. Currently, the RB data is publicly available online at several biodiversity portals, such as our institutional database JABOT, the Reflora Virtual Herbarium, the SiBBr and the GBIF portal (Lanna et al. 2019). However, a description of the dataset that belongs to the Federal Conservation Units of Caatinga’s phytogeography domain as a whole is not yet available in the literature.
