Turritellidae (Gastropoda) of the Miocene Paratethys Sea with considerations about turritellid genera

We present a critical evaluation of the taxonomy, stratigraphy and biogeography of the turritellid gastropods of the Miocene Paratethys Sea. 159 species-level names and 6 infrasubspecific names have been used for Paratethyan Turritellidae since 1848. Of these, only 35 species are accepted herein as valid species, with some uncertainties due to poor preservation or limited access to type material. Maximum diversities occurred during the early middle Miocene (Langhian, Badenian) coinciding with the Miocene Climatic Optimum. Whilst early Miocene turritellid assemblages are characterized by large to very large species of Peyrotia, Turritella and Allmonia, middle Miocene assemblages are predominated by medium-sized species of Archimediella, Helminthia, Oligodia and Ptychidia. The taxonomic composition of these faunas, with representatives of Archimediella, Helminthia, Mesalia and Vermicularia suggests a biogeographic affiliation with Atlantic and especially West African faunas.                Turritellinella new gen. is established as new genus for the eastern Atlantic-Mediterranean Turritella tricarinata/communis complex. Viennella is described as new genus with Turritella incisaeformis Csepreghy-Meznerics 1956 as type species. Allmonia new gen. is introduced as new genus for European Cenozoic Protominae previously placed in Protoma. For the first time, inner lirae are documented as conchological features of Turritellidae.                Six species are described as new, three within the Turritellinae: Archimediella carpathica new sp., Ptychidia erynella new sp. and Viennella ignorata new sp., and three within the Pareorinae: Mesalia sovisi new sp., Mesalia stryriaca new sp. and Mesalia bohnhavasae new sp.. Ptychidia austrorotundata new nom. is proposed as new name Turritella turris rotundata Schaffer 1912, non Turritella rotundata Grzybowski 1899. We designate lectotypes for Turritella gradata Menke in Hörnes, 1855, Haustator striatellatus Sacco, 1895, Allmonia carniolica (Stache, 1858) and Allmonia alterniplicata (Sacco, 1895). Neotypes are designated for Archimediella abundans (Handmann, 1882), Archimediella hoernesi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia partschi (Rolle, 1856), Ptychidia? ernesti (Handmann, 1882). Rhabdosis Townes, 1970 (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) is a junior homonym of Rhabdosis Handmann 1882 (Gastropoda, Turritellidae) and will need a new name.

Following a phylogenetic analysis using morphology, Pittosporum is here monographed and recircumscribed as a monophyletic genus, by including the small genus Citriobatus and by excluding a new genus, described in the accompanying paper as Auranticarpa. Within Australia and its associated territories, 20 species are now recognised in Pittosporum, including the four from Citriobatus, three of which are given new combinations (P. spinescens, P. lancifolium and P. multiflorum). Citriobatus linearis requires a new name (P. viscidum). Four species are reinstated or confirmed at species level (P. angustifolium, P. ligustrifolium, P. nativitatis and P. wingii), and P. trilobum is described for the first time.

The genus Limonius Eschscholtz, 1829 was last treated as a whole by Candèze (1860). Since then, members have been placed in eight other genera: Cidnopus Thomson, 1859; Gambrinus LeConte, 1853; Elathous Reitter, 1890; Kibunea Kishii, 1966; Limoniscus Reitter, 1905; Nothodes LeConte, 1861; Pheletes Kiesenwetter, 1858; and Solskyana Dolin, 1978. Based on the examination of adult and larval characters, five genera are recognized: Elathous Reitter, 1890; Gambrinus LeConte, 1853; Limonius Eschscholtz, 1829; Pheletes Kiesenwetter, 1858; and Tetralimonius new genus. Limoniscus Reitter, 1905 and Sichuanelater Platia and Gudenzi, 2006 are new synonymies of Gambrinus LeConte, 1853; Micrathous Lane, 1971, Neoathousius Schimmel and Platia, 1991 and Solskyana Dolin, 1978 are all new synonymies of Limonius. Limonius kondratieffi Al Dhafer, 2009 is a new synonymy of Elathous bicolor (LeConte, 1853). A key to genera, generic descriptions, notes on species, and definitions of important characters are provided.

A taxonomic revision of the tribe Ceroptresini (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) is conducted for the first time. Prior to this study, the total number of valid species of Ceroptres, the only genus within Ceroptresini to date, was 23. As a result of this revision, 15 Ceroptres species are retained as valid and one species, Amblynotus ensiger Walsh, 1864, is desynonymized from Ceroptres petiolicola (Osten-Sacken, 1861), being considered here as a valid Ceroptres species: C. ensiger (Walsh, 1864) status verified and comb. nov. An additional five new species are described from Mexico: Ceroptres junquerasi Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. lenis Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. mexicanus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. nigricrus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov.; C. quadratifacies Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar sp. nov., increasing the total number of valid Ceroptres species to 21. Ceroptres masudai Abe, 1997 is synonymized with C. kovalevi Belizin, 1973. Ceroptres niger Fullaway, 1911 is transferred to Andricus (Andricus confusus Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar comb. nov. and nom. nov.). Five species (Amblynotus inermis Walsh, 1864; Cynips quercusarbos Fitch, 1859; Cynips querficus Fitch, 1859; Cynips quercuspisum Fitch, 1859; and Cynips quercustuber Fitch, 1859) are not considered as valid Ceroptres. The status of Ceroptres quereicola (Shinji, 1938), previously classified as an unplaced species, is commented on. In addition, a Nearctic species from the USA, Ceroptres politus Ashmead, 1896, is here proposed as the type species of a new genus within Ceroptresini: Buffingtonella Lobato-Vila & Pujade-Villar gen. nov. Redescriptions, biological and distribution data, illustrations and keys to genera and species within Ceroptresini are provided. The diagnostic morphological traits of Ceroptresini, Ceroptres and the new genus are discussed.

AbstractStudy of new collections of the Wenlock and Pridoli, Silurian, crinoids from Saaremaa, western Estonia, result in taxonomic revision, expanded ranges, and new taxa. Eucalyptocrinites regularis and Periechocrinus laevis are recognized outside of Sweden for the first time. Desmidocrinus laevigatus Ausich et al., 2012 is reassigned to Methabocrinus. Because the type species of Methabocrinus was previously known only from glacial sediments, the age and provenance of this genus are constrained for the first time. A new crotalocrinitid, Velocrinus coniculus new genus and species, is described. Although the Pridoli faunas of western Estonia contain only twelve species-level taxa assigned to nine genera, this fauna is one of the four richest Pridoli faunas known.

While about 100 new species of Micromyinae have been described from Sweden in the past ten years, ongoing research into the country’s fauna continues to unveil previously unknown taxa. This paper provides scientific descriptions of another 13 new species from various parts of Sweden, belonging to six different genera, including a new genus. The new taxa, all to be attributed to both authors, are named as follows: Antennardia suorkensis sp. nov., Aprionus mossbergi sp. nov., Apr. oljonsbynensis sp. nov., Ladopyris baltica gen. et sp. nov. (found also in Estonia), Monardia (M.) lapponica sp. nov., Monardia (Xylopriona) abbreviata sp. nov., Mon. (Xyl.) obscura sp. nov., Neurolyga simillima sp. nov., N. taigensis sp. nov. (found also in the Republic of Karelia, Russian Federation), Peromyia elongatula sp. nov., P. lindstroemi sp. nov. and P. sofielundensis sp. nov. Two new junior synonyms of Aprionus Kieffer, 1894 were identified: Azygotricha Plakidas, 2017 syn. nov. and Ampullomyia Plakidas, 2018 syn. nov., both introduced for Nearctic species. The generic rank of Antennardia Mamaev, previously treated as a subgenus of Monardia Kieffer, is restored. Aprionus internuntius Jaschhof, 2003, previously regarded as synonymous with A. stylifer Mamaev, 1998, is restituted as a valid species. Peromyia assimilis nom. nov. is established as the new substitute name for P. despecta Jaschhof, 2017, found to be a junior homonym of P. despecta Jaschhof, 2010. Micromyinae discovered in Sweden for the first time are Antennardia saxonica Jaschhof, Aprionus heothinos Jaschhof, Apr. internuntius, Monardia (M.) lignivora (Felt), Monardia (Trichopteromyia) relicta Jaschhof, Neurolyga venusta (Mamaev & Rozhnova), Peromyia abdita Jaschhof, and P. brandenburgensis Jaschhof.

A checklist of Recent and fossil catfishes (Order Siluriformes) is presented, summarizing taxonomic literature published through 2005. From 4624 nominal species group names and 810 genus group names, 3093 species are recognized as valid, and are distributed among 478 genera and 36 families. Distributional summaries are provided for each species, and nomenclatural synonymies, including relevant information on all name-bearing types, are included for all taxa. One new name is proposed herein: Clariallabes teugelsi, as a replacement for Clarias (Allabenchelys) dumerili longibarbis David & Poll, 1937, which is preoccupied by Clarias longibarbis Worthington, 1933, but has been treated as a valid species of Clariallabes by Teugels. Acrochordonichthys melanogaster Bleeker, 1854, is designated as type species of Acrochordonichthys Bleeker, 1857, inasmuch as no earlier valid designation has been found. A new genus Pseudobagarius, is proposed for the “pseudobagarius group” of species formerly placed in Akysis. The status of 228 species group names remains unresolved and 31 names based on otoliths ascribed to catfishes are listed but not placed into the checklist. The current emphasis given to catfish taxonomy at present is likely to result in a dramatic increase in the total number of valid taxa as well as major changes in the membership of some of the higher level taxa recognized here.

The genus Aglaotilla Brothers, gen. nov., is described for 14 striking species of Australian Mutillidae related to Ephutomorpha André, 1902, characterized by bright metallic coloration and strong punctation. The description of both sexes is possible through sex associations revealed by rearings from mud nests and trap nests. Both sexes of the type species, Ephutomorpha submetallescens Turner, 1916, are described and illustrated, the male for the first time. New combinations and a new name are proposed, as follows: Aglaotilla aeruginosa (Smith, 1879), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. australis (André, 1898), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. cuprea (André, 1901), comb. nov., stat. nov. (from Mutilla); A. dilecta (Turner, 1916), comb. nov. (from Ephutomorpha); A. ignita (Smith, 1855), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. metallica (Smith, 1855), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. mira (André, 1895), comb. nov. (from Mutilla (Sphaerophthalma [sic.])); A. nigroaenea (Smith, 1855), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. picturata (Turner, 1914), comb. nov. (from Ephutomorpha); A. semicuprea (André, 1898), comb. nov. (from Mutilla); A. submetallescens (Turner, 1916), comb. nov. Carpocoris mediterraneus Tamanini, 1958, synonymized with Carpocoris fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) by Ribes et al. (2007), is restored to the species level. The shape of the pronotum is a good diagnostic character to distinguish the two species. The existence of two valid species is supported by geographical distribution patterns in Western Europe: Medi-terranean-Atlantic for C. mediterraneus, and Continental for C. fuscispinus. In France and Spain, in some areas, the two species are found in sympatry (sometimes even on the same plant). Morphological observations are confirmed at the mo-lecular level by sequencing of the mitochondrial Cytochrome c oxidase I standard barcode fragment. Indeed, inter-specific divergence largely exceeded intra-specific divergence and our phylogenetic reconstructions reveal that Carpocoris medi-terraneus and Carpocoris fuscispinus form two reciprocally monophyletic genetic lineages. A morphological identifica-tion key is proposed for all the European species of the genus Carpocoris, to facilitate identification. Carpocoris fuscispinus is first time recorded from Portugal.

All 37 eastern species of the genus Pultenaea Sm. with recurved leaves have been revised and two names are reduced to synonymy for the first time. Four new species are described: Pultenaea tarik de Kok, P.�borea de Kok, P.�bracteamajor de Kok and P.�bracteaminor de Kok. One taxon is given a new name: P.�rariflora de Kok (�=�Pultenaea paleacea var. pauciflora C.T.White). Two taxa are recognised in this study at the species level for the first time: P.�elusa (J.D. Briggs & Crisp) de Kok and P.�robusta (H.B.Will.) de Kok. For one species: P.�elachista (F.Muell.) Crisp, a neotype is proposed. Seven species are lectotypified (P.�benthamii F.Muell., P.�densifolia F.Muell., P. gunnii Benth., P.�largiflorens F.Muell. ex Benth., P.�myrtoides A.Cunn. ex Benth., P.�patellifolia H.B.Will. and P.�retusa Sm.). Two species (P.�elusa and P.�maidenii Reader) are considered extinct in this study. A key to the group is provided and a brief discussion is given as to the legitimacy of these species being treated as a separate group. A list of all accepted names and synonyms of the eastern species of Pultenaea is given.

Biemna Gray, 1867 is characterized by stylote or exceptionally oxeote megascleres arranged in a plumoreticulate skeleton, ectosomal skeleton consists of the brushed endings of choanosomal tracts, microscleres are sigmas, microxeas, commata and raphides (Hajdu & Van Soest 2002). Currently, Biemna has 55 valid species (Van Soest et al. 2018). In Brazil, three species are known from northern region (Muricy 2018): Biemna microacanthosigma Mothes, Hajdu, Lerner & Van Soest, 2004, Biemna spinomicroxea Mothes, Campos, Lerner, Carraro & Van Soest, 2005, Biemna trisigmata Mothes & Campos, 2004. In this present study, a new name is proposed for a preoccupied combination, Biemna thomasi nom. nov. The species Biemna caribea Pulitzer-Finali, 1986 is recorded and described for the first time in Brazilian waters. Six specimens of Biemna were studied in Pernambuco and Bahia States. All specimens were preserved in 80% ethanol and deposited on the Porifera Collections at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPEPOR).
