Polycentropus dinkinsorum (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae), a newly described caddisfly species from the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA

We describe here a new caddisfly species of the genus Polycentropus (Trichoptera: Polycentropodidae) based on males from numerous localities throughout the southern Appalachian Mountains of the United States. Polycentropus dinkinsorum is a member of the P. confusus Species Group and is readily separated from its congeners based on aspects of the male genitalia. A diagnosis and illustrations of male genitalia are provided. In addition, P. pentus Ross 1941 is reported for the first time from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This paper summarizes data on nitrification at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, in the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, U.S.A., focusing on effects of watershed treatment and vegetation type. At Coweeta, as at other United States sites, oak–hickory forests gave the lowest nitrification potentials. Nitrification potentials and nitrifier numbers were lower in oak–hickory forests of undisturbed watersheds than in disturbed watersheds. Nitrification potentials were also low in a white pine plantation, although higher than in other pine forests in the United States. In a regenerating clear-cut and in a 17-year-old successional forest at Coweeta, nitrification potential was higher in dense stands of black locust (Robiniapseudoacacia L.) than in areas where black locust was absent. In the undisturbed forests at Coweeta, low nutrient availability probably limits the size of nitrifier populations; the influence of soil pH on nitrification was unclear. In the disturbed forests, nitrification is apparently controlled by the availability of ammonium nitrogen and other nutrients.

The cleptoparasitic bee genus Epeolus Latreille, 1802 is for the first time reviewed for species occurring in the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, and a single dichotomous identification key to the females and males of species present or likely to be present in these regions is presented. A total of 25 species have been confirmed as present across the region, although another 10 likely occur south of the Mexico–United States border. Three species are newly described—E. hanusiae sp. nov., E. nomadiformis sp. nov. and E. odyneroides sp. nov.—and redescriptions are provided for species occurring exclusively south of the United States of America (species occurring north of Mexico were recently revised elsewhere) except E. danieli (Genaro, 2014) comb. nov., which was recently described. One subspecies is elevated to species level (E. obscuripes Cockerell, 1917 stat. nov.). The following five names are newly synonymized under those of four valid species: Trophocleptria schraderi Michener, 1954 syn. nov. under E. boliviensis Friese, 1908, Tro. odontothorax Michener, 1954 syn. nov. under E. claripennis Friese, 1908, E. rugosus Cockerell, 1949 syn. nov. and E. xanthurus Cockerell, 1917 syn. nov. under E. luteipennis Friese, 1916, and E. schmidti Friese, 1925 syn. nov. under E. obscuripes. A diagnosis is provided for the presumably monophyletic and almost entirely Neotropical species group originally regarded as a separate genus, Trophocleptria Holmberg, 1886. Differential diagnoses accompany the descriptions / redescriptions of Neotropical species of Epeolus, and known collection records and information about their ecology are presented.

The freshwater leeches (Hirudinida) in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador were investigated by examining theliterature, the Canadian Museum of Nature and the United States National Museum of Natural History records, and aleech survey. New pigmentation forms are described for Erpobdella punctata (Leidy) and Erpobdella obscura (Verrill).This is the first published record for Haemopis lateromaculata Mathers in Canada. Four species (Glossiphonia elegans(Verrill), Helobdella modesta (Verrill), Erpobdella punctata, and Erpobdella obscura) were found in both Labrador andNewfoundland with Erpobdella obscura common in Labrador and the other three species common in Newfoundland.Seven other species of leeches were less abundant in Newfoundland with 6 of these species very restricted in distribution.The abundance of leech species in Newfoundland and the paucity of leech species in Labrador suggested that theisland species were present in a Pleistocene refugium associated with Newfoundland or the Grand Banks. Post-Pleistocenebarriers to leech mobility are examined, and possible timing of colonization events is proposed in this model.

The male genitalia of each species are drawn and the major diagnostic characters are illustrated with scanning electron photomicrographs. A diagnostic key to all the taxa is included.
