Extreme Rainfall in Taiwan: Seasonal Statistics and Trends

AbstractTaiwan regularly experiences precipitation extremes of hundreds of millimeters per day, especially between May and September. In this study, Taiwan’s extreme rainfall (ER) is analyzed over a 56-year time period in different seasons and geographic regions, using a recently released, high-resolution gridded rainfall dataset. ER is defined using a seasonally- and geographically-varying 99th percentile threshold to better resolve the characteristics of the most intense rainfall seen in different locations and times of year. The resulting monthly ER rates are largest in typhoon season and smallest in fall, winter, and spring. ER is spatially homogeneous in Mei-Yu and typhoon seasons and concentrated in northern Taiwan in during the rest of the year.A trend analysis revealed a positive trend in island-mean ER for the winter, spring, and typhoon seasons. In winter and spring, these trends are most pronounced in the north. In Mei-Yu season, ER has increased most over the southwestern mountain slopes; and in typhoon season, ER has increased consistently over much of Taiwan. These changes often exceed 1% per year. In many areas, typhoon season accounts for the largest fraction of the observed annual ER trend. TCs produce most of the observed typhoon season ER and ER trend, with nearly half of the typhoon season ER trend being associated with increases in TC frequency and duration around central and northern Taiwan.Certain regional changes in ER characteristics, particularly in areas with low sample size or complex seasonal contributions, merit further investigation in future work.

Abstract. Sea ice export through Baffin Bay plays a vital role in modulating the meridional overturning process in the downstream Labrador Sea. In this study, satellite-derived sea ice products are explored to obtain the sea ice flux (SIF) through three passages (referred to as A, B, and C for the north, middle, and south passages, respectively) of Baffin Bay. Over the period 1988–2015, the average annual (October–September) sea ice area export is 555 × 103 km2, 642 × 103 km2, and 551 × 103 km2 through passages A, B, and C, respectively. These amounts are less than that observed through the Fram Strait (FS, 707 × 103 km2). Clear increasing trends in annual sea ice export on the order of 53.1 × 103 km2/de and 43.2 × 103 km2/de are identified at passages A and B, respectively. The trend at the south passage (C), however, is slightly negative (−13.3 × 103 km2/de). The positive trends in annual SIF at A and B are primarily attributable to the increase during winter months, which is triggered by the accelerated sea ice motion (SIM) and partly compensated by the reduced sea ice concentration (SIC). During the summer months, the sea ice export through each Baffin Bay passage usually presents a negative trend, primarily because of the decline in SIM and it is further enhanced by a dramatic decrease in SIC. A significant positive trend in the net SIF (i.e. net ice inflow) is found for between the passages A (or B) and C at 54.5 (or 64.2) × 103 km2/de. Therefore, Baffin Bay may have presented a greater convergence of ice. Overall, the connection between Baffin Bay sea ice export and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is tenuous, although the correlation is sensitive to variations in the selected time period. In contrast, the association with the cross-gate sea level pressure difference (SLPD) is robust in Baffin Bay (R = 0.69–0.71 depending on the passages), but relatively weaker compared with that in the FS (R = 0.74). Baffin Bay is bounded by Baffin Island to the west and Greenland to the east, thus, sea ice drift is not converted to the free state observed in the FS.

Abstract. More intense rainfall may cause a range of negative impacts upon society and the environment. In this study we analysed trends in extreme ETCCDI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices) rainfall indices in Montenegro for the period between 1951 and 2010. Montenegro has been poorly studied in terms of rainfall extremes, yet it contains the wettest Mediterranean region known as Krivošije. Several indices of precipitation extremes were assessed including the number of dry days and rainfall totals in order to identify trends and possible changes. A spatial pattern relationship between extreme rainfall indices and the North Atlantic Oscillation has also been examined. The results generally suggest that the number of days with precipitation decreased while rainfall intensity increased, particularly in south-western parts of the country. A slight tendency towards intense rainfall events is suggested. The examined rainfall indices and North Atlantic Oscillation over Montenegro seemed to be directly linked to changes in one of the major large-scale circulation modes such as the NAO pattern that is particularly evident during the winter season.

In this article I analyse aspects connected to exoticism in Bayard Taylor's Northern Travel (1858) and Susannah Henrietta Kent's Within the Arctic Circle (1877). Despite gender differences and different seasons in which the travellers undertake their trips, there are similarities between the texts which indicate that discourses connected to the destination to an extent structure representations and determine what is to be rendered as exotic. The close readings are focused on Kent's and Taylor's depictions of Sami life, the cold, the perceived 'backwardness' of the area, the midnight sun and the northern lights. The analyses illustrate that two forms of exoticism feature in the travelogues; an exoticising exoticism figure aspects of the landscape and the people which are benevolently viewed and not in need of improvement or change, and an imperialist exoticism structure depictions of aspects which are seen as in need of amendment. Kent and Taylor express different aims with their journeys; the former to establish the area as a 'safe' destination for travellers of both genders and all ages, the latter to test his masculinity against the harsh climate. These different aims, as well as the time period which sees Scandinavia established as a tourist destination, thus threatening what was perceived as authentic travel experiences, are also discussed in the analyses of how both travellers vacillate between different exoticconstructions of the North.

We consider revolutions and civil war involving an incumbent, a challenger, and the population. Revolutions are classified into eight outcomes. In four outcomes incumbent repression occurs (viewed as providing sub-threshold benefits such as public goods to the population). Accommodation occurs in the other four outcomes (benefits provision above a threshold). The incumbent and challenger fight each other. The incumbent may win and retain power or else lose, thereby causing standoff or coalition. In a standoff, which is costly, no one backs down and uncertainty exists about who is in power. In a coalition, which is less costly, the incumbent and challenger cooperate, compromise, and negotiate their differences. If the population successfully revolts against the incumbent, the challenger replaces the incumbent. Eighty-seven revolutions during 1961–2011, including the recent Arab spring revolutions, are classified into the eight outcomes. When repressive, the incumbent loses 46 revolutions, remains in power through 21 revolutions, and builds a coalition after 12 revolutions. When accommodative, the incumbent loses seven revolutions and builds a coalition after one revolution. The 87 revolutions are classified across geographic regions and by time-period.

Abstract In the article is analyzed own field data of the authors and scientific publications on the wintering of Anserinae in the Azov-Black Sea region of Ukraine in 1900–2017, but the main data was obtained in frame of international mid-winter counts (IWC) in 2005–2017. It was found that 9 species of Anserinae occur in this region during the different seasons of the year: Anser anser — nesting, wintering and migrating; Rufibrenta ruficollis, A. albifrons, A. erythropus, A. fabalis — migrating and wintering; Branta canadensis, Branta leucopsis, Branta bernicla, Chen caerulescens — vagrant or birds which flew away from captivity (zoo etc.). Eulabeia indica — is possible vagrant species. The most numerous wintering species is A. albifrons, common — Rufibrenta ruficollis, not numerous — Anser anser, the other species are not met annually and registered in a very small number. There was almost tenfold drop in number of wintering geese in the Azov-Black Sea region of Ukraine during the period of counts. The main reasons of such reducing of geese amount are the followwing: weather and climate conditions, changes in the forage acessibility, hunting and poaching pressure, poisoning as a result of deratization of agricultural lands, and from 2014 — the militarization of the Syvash area and stop of water supplying of Crimea through the North Crimean channell. It is likely that the factors mentioned above led to relocating of wintering areas of Anserinae, and resulted in decreasing of their amount in this region.

Abstract A set of 5 wells were to be drilled with directional Coiled Tubing Drilling (CTD) on the North Slope of Alaska. The particular challenges of these wells were the fact that the desired laterals were targeted to be at least 6000ft long, at a shallow depth. Almost twice the length of laterals that are regularly drilled at deeper depths. The shallow depth meant that 2 of the 5 wells involved a casing exit through 3 casings which had never been attempted before. After drilling, the wells were completed with a slotted liner, run on coiled tubing. This required a very smooth and straight wellbore so that the liner could be run as far as the lateral had been drilled. Various methods were considered to increase lateral reach, including, running an extended reach tool, using friction reducer, increasing the coiled tubing size and using a drilling Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) that could drill a very straight well path. All of these options were modelled with tubing forces software, and their relative effectiveness was evaluated. The drilling field results easily exceeded the minimum requirements for success. This project demonstrated record breaking lateral lengths, a record length of liner run on coiled tubing in a single run, and a triple casing exit. The data gained from this project can be used to fine-tune the modelling for future work of a similar nature.

Introduction: Suicide rates have risen in England over the last decade and hanging, a highly lethal method of suicide, has been the most common method. Previous work in this area identified a lack of literature discussing emergency medical services (EMS) attendance at hangings. This article aims to describe hangings attended by EMS in the North East of England in order to inform future work in this area.Methods: A retrospective service evaluation was conducted using existing data from a comprehensive pre-hospital trauma audit database to describe patients with hanging documented in their records who were attended by ambulance clinicians between 1 December 2018 and 31 November 2020.Results: Hanging was recorded in 604 incidents. Most cases (n = 579/604) involved adults (aged 18 years or older) with a median age of 35 years (IQR 27‐45 years), who were male (n = 410/579, 71%). Just over half (n = 341/579, 59%) of adult hangings resulted in cardiac arrest and of these, 10% (n = 33/341) were resuscitated and survived to hospital admission. Threatened and non-fatal hangings appear to have increased dramatically in the latter half of 2020. Previous suicide attempts and mental health issues were frequently reported across this population.Conclusion: Hangings are a method of suicide which frequently result in a cardiac arrest. In the North East of England the ambulance service attends approximately one hanging per day and one fatal hanging every two days. When fatal hangings were resuscitated, pre-hospital outcomes were similar to other causes of cardiac arrest, highlighting that despite the traumatic nature of these cases resuscitation is not futile. In order to better understand this patient group and improve care, pre-hospital data need to be linked to data from other services such as mental health services and acute hospitals.

Background: Post-operative low output failure (LOF) is an important contributor to morbidity and mortality during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, and may result from poor myocardial protection. We hypothesized that rates of LOF would vary across surgeons, in part attributed to their myocardial protective strategy. Methods: We identified 11,838 patients undergoing non-emergent, isolated CABG surgery utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) at 8 centers in northern New England from 2001-2009. Our cohort included patients with preoperative ejection fractions 40+% and patients operated on by surgeons who performed 80+ CABG procedures during the time period. Patients with preoperative balloon pumps were excluded. LOF was defined as the need for an intra- or post-operative balloon pump, or return to CPB or 2+ inotropes at 48 hours. Predicted rates of LOF were estimated using logistic regression. Results: Case volume varied across surgeons (range: 80-766, median: 344). Overall rate of LOF was 5.3% (return to CPB: 3.2%, balloon pump: 1.8%, inotrope usage: 1.3%). While predicted risk of LOF did not differ across surgeons, p=0.381, observed rates varied from 1.1% to 15.6%, p=0.003 (Figure). Post-operative outcomes, including death (ptrend=0.03) or stroke (ptrend =0.02), significantly increased across surgical LOF strata (low: <2%, medium: 3-9%, high: 10+%). Conclusions There was a 14-fold variability in rates of LOF across surgeons among patients with ejection fractions 40+%. This variability could not be explained by patient case mix. Future work should focus on understanding the relationship between myocardial protective strategy and risk of LOF.
