References Values for the Current Perception Threshold in the Pharynx Based on a Study of a Healthy Population

Objectives: The application of the current perception threshold (CPT) in the diagnosis of pharyngeal sensory abnormalities has rarely been studied, and there is a lack of reference values for this application. This study established a normal reference range for CPT in the pharynx based on a study of a healthy population. Methods: The CPT values of the palatoglossal arch, posterior 1/3 of the lingual body and hard palate were measured in 60 healthy individuals at 2000, 250, and 5 Hz. The influencing factors were analyzed, and reference values for the CPT were established. Results: There was no correlation between the CPT value and gender. Age was only correlated at 250 Hz level in the hard palate. The CPT values of the palatoglossal arch were 324.95 ± 82.422 at 2000 Hz, 66.90 ± 38.622 at 250 Hz, and 13 ± 14.93 (7.83-22.75) at 5 Hz. The CPT values of the posterior 1/3 of the lingual body were 359.17 ± 76.299 at 2000 Hz, 86.92 ± 35.151 at 250 Hz, and 19 ± 15.73 (13.03-28.75) at 5 Hz. The CPT values of the hard palate were 157.5 ± 61.75 (124-185.75) at 2000 Hz, 57.63 ± 28.785 at 250 Hz, and 22 ± 25.73 (11.03-36.75) at 5 Hz. Conclusions: The CPT values of the pharynx in healthy people were not related to gender. The CPT values of the hard palate for 250 Hz stimulation were related to age, and there were no relationships between the CPT values and age for the other frequencies and loci. We established a normal reference range of CPT values in the pharynx from measurements obtained from healthy populations.

AbstractPrevious studies with mainly selected populations have proposed contradicting reference ranges for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and have disagreed on how screening, age and gender affect them. This study aimed to determine a TSH reference range on the Abbott Architect ci8200 integrated system in a large, nationwide, stratified random sample. To our knowledge this is the only study apart from the NHANES III that has addressed this issue in a similar nationwide setting. The effects of age, gender, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb)-positivity and medications on TSH reference range were also assessed.TSH was measured from 6247 participants randomly drawn from the population register to represent the Finnish adult population. TSH reference ranges were established of a thyroid-healthy population and its subpopulations with increasing and cumulative rigour of screening: screening for overt thyroid disease (thyroid-healthy population, n=5709); screening for TPOAb-positivity (risk factor-free subpopulation, n=4586); and screening for use of any medications (reference subpopulation, n=1849).The TSH reference ranges of the thyroid-healthy population, and the risk factor-free and reference subpopulations were 0.4–4.4, 0.4–3.7 and 0.4–3.4 mU/L (2.5th–97.5th percentiles), respectively. Although the differences in TSH between subgroups for age (p=0.002) and gender (p=0.005) reached statistical significance, the TSH distribution curves of the subgroups were practically superimposed.We propose 0.4–3.4 mU/L as a TSH reference range for adults for this platform, which is lower than those presently used in most laboratories. Our findings suggest that intensive screening for thyroid risk factors, especially for TPOAb-positivity, decreases the TSH upper reference limit.

This study was conducted at the Department of Animal Science’s Teaching and Research farm of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto to evaluate the effect of feeding different kanwa based mineral licks on blood profile of Uda rams. Blood of twenty (20) yearlings Uda rams aged by dentition were used to evaluate the effect of Kanwa¬-based mineral blocks. Four (4) animals were allotted to each treatment (Kanwa block) with each animal serving as a replicate. The Kanwa used were Kanwan Bai-Bai, Kanwan Kolo, Hogga, Balma and conventional mineral lick to represent treatment 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Data was collected at the end of the experiment. The result of haematological analysis showed significant (p<0.05) differences in all the parameters analysed except PCV, MCH, WBC and eosinophil; the result indicated that all the values where within the normal reference range except in MCHC where animals placed in T2 and T3 shows values slightly above the normal range. The result of serum biochemistry showed that all the values measured were within the normal reference range for sheep except the albumin of animals placed in T3 which had values slightly above the normal range. The serum mineral composition showed that Potassium levels were higher in T2 and lower in T4; however, there was no difference between animals placed in treatments 1, 2 and 3, so also between treatments 1, 3 and 4. The study concluded that Kanwa positively affected sheep production with no adverse effect on both haematological and serum chemistry, hence little health hazard is associated with feeding Kanwa-based blocks on growing Uda rams.
