An automated continuous quality improvement framework for failing student outcomes based on mathematics weaknesses

In this paper, we present a detailed action plan under continuous quality improvement (CQI) exercise of outcomes based education framework related to Mathematics concerns highlighted by the Electrical Engineering (EE) Department. Failing and low performed student learning outcomes (SOs) and course learning outcomes (COs) in range of core EE courses were observed to be linked with weak Mathematics basis of students. This feedback was achieved through an automated CQI system in EvalTools under Faculty Class Assessment Report (FCAR) tab, where each instructor is required to make reflections about failing as well as low performed SOs and COs. Feedback was reviewed comprehensively, and mathematical concepts which significantly affect the performance of students in the core EE courses were derived. Moreover, a high level of Mathematics pre-requisite covering required mathematical concepts is identified for the range of core EE courses. Consequently, well-defined tasks were assigned to continuously evaluate and monitor improvement in required Mathematics concepts to ensure SOs and COs achieved in core EE courses. Results are given to exhibit the effectiveness of continuous improvement management system (CIMS).

Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is an important element in quality management. This is because CQI is a key factor in improving the quality of education and ensuring that improvements in teaching and learning activities are continuously implemented. The implementation of CQI in Vocational Colleges (VCs) is increasingly being carried out in line with the application of the outcome-based learning (OBE) approach. However, reports from the board of accreditation showed differences in CQI practices for several programs under the same institution. Thus, this study can give a clear picture of CQI practice in VCs. This study was conducted to identify CQI practices in VCs and make comparisons of practice based on demographic factors namely gender, age, and teaching field. This survey-based study used questionnaires as a research instrument. The respondents of the study consisted of 87 VCs lecturers in the states of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was used to attain the practice level and make comparisons on demographic factors. The findings of the study found that the practice of CQI in VCs was at a high level. However, there were significant differences based on demographic factors for the age group in the dimensions of customer focus and teamwork. This study could provide input to the Vocational Educational and Training Department (BPLTV) on the practice of CQI in VCs. With this input, actions and improvement measures can be planned and implemented to improve VCs. Therefore, it is hoped that this study could be a platform for improvement in VCs quality management.

Assessment and evaluation of outcomes and continuous quality improvement often lead to uneasiness among engineering educators, which is a barrier to implementing an effective system of results-assessment. The sophisticated evaluation models and analytical instruments adopted by higher learning institutions are believed to worsen this uneasiness, impeding the successful implementation of programme quality improvement. In this paper, the challenges in assessing and evaluating learning outcomes, types of programme outcome assessment model and an analytical tool known as Engineering Outcome Analytics developed by Tunku Abdul Rahman University College for the assessment were presented. Documents related to quality improvement from two higher learning institutions in Malaysia were reviewed and discussed based on the key elements of continuous quality improvement. The results can be used to avoid the shortcomings and adopt the best practices in continuous quality improvement. With proper understanding on the key elements of continuous quality improvement, and adoption of culminating assessment model and a highly integrated analytical tool, engineering educators and programme owners are expected to benefit from this re-search in three ways. First, it cultivates a culture of continuous improvement of quality by increasing the educators' willingness to evaluate results. Second, it enhances their existing analytical tools to reflect students' actual developments, resulting in significant continuous actions to improve quality. Third, it satisfies the accreditation requirements on outcomes-based assessment.

This research is motivated by the competence of teachers in preparing poor learning outcomes tests and has not been able to measure high-level thinking skills, especially critical thinking skills. Therefore the researcher seeks to improve teacher competence in compiling tests on student learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills through academic supervision. This study uses a school action research design that has stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This research was conducted for 2 months starting April 9 to May 17, 2019 for Physics teachers in the 7 target schools. Data is sourced from interviews with teachers and test documents prepared by the teacher. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis through the stages of data collection, data simplification, data presentation, conclusion drawing. Data were analyzed using assessment rubrics adjusted to indicators of critical thinking skills. The results of this study conclude that teacher competence in preparing tests of learning outcomes based on critical thinking skills has increased from the first cycle with a percentage of 61% with sufficient categories to 76% with good categories in cycle II.

The background of this study was the low student learning outcomes of PPKn, from 28 students who achievedthe completeness criteria at least only 11 students (39.29%). The low student learning outcomes are caused bythe high level of individuality between students so that the achievement of competence among studentsexperiences a very distant difference. Based on this, the researchers made improvements to student learningoutcomes through the application of STAD cooperative learning models. This research is a classroom actionresearch, with the subject of class VII of SMP Negeri 3 Teluk Kuantan. The data used in this study is PPKnlearning outcomes data. The results stated that after applying the STAD type cooperative learning model studentlearning outcomes had increased in the initial data the number of students who completed were 11 students, incycle I had an increase with the number of 18 students, and in cycle II the number of students who completedcontinued to increase by the number 22 student.

BACKGROUND: Supporting employment consultants in their work with job seekers is critical for increasing the employment outcomes of people with disabilities. OBJECTIVE: To better understand how to leverage data for supporting employment consultants, including what metrics to track, what to do with the data, and what can be improved. METHODS: A panel of three directors of employment programs addressed these questions as part of the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) 2020 conference. RESULTS: Most employment service providers collect data for billing and compliance reporting. Innovative providers leverage data for quality improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Tracking metrics designed specifically for monitoring the implementation of effective employment supports is key for leveraging data for continuous quality improvement and thus improving job seekers’ employment outcomes.

Healthcare organizations engage in continuous quality improvement to improve performance and value-for-performance, but the pathway to change is often rooted in challenging the way things are “normally” done. In an effort to propel system-wide change to support healthy eating, Nova Scotia Health developed and implemented a healthy eating policy as a benchmark to create a food environment supportive of health. This article describes the healthy eating policy and its role as a benchmark in the quality improvement process. The policy, rooted in health promotion, sets a standard for healthy eating and applies to stakeholders both inside and outside of health. We explain how the policy offers nutrition but also cultural benchmarks around healthy eating, bringing practitioners throughout Nova Scotia Health together and sustaining collaborative efforts to improve upon the status quo.
