This work focuses on the experimental investigation of indentation damage resistance in different stacking sequences of glass/epoxy composite laminates under cyclic loading on normal (0°) and oblique (20°) planes. The stacking sequence, such as unidirectional [0]12, angle ply [±45]6S, and cross ply [0/90]6S, were subjected to cyclic indentation loading and monitoring by acoustic emission testing (AE). The laminates were loaded at the center using a hemispherical steel indenter with a 12.7 mm diameter. The cyclic indentation loading was performed at displacements from 0.5 to 3 mm with an increment of 0.5 mm in each cycle. Subsequently, the residual compressive strength of the post-indented laminates was estimated by testing them under in-plane loading, once again with AE monitoring. Mechanical responses such as peak load, absorbed energy, stiffness, residual dent, and damage area were used for the quantification of the indentation-induced damage. The normalized AE cumulative counts, AE energy, and Felicity ratio were used for monitoring the damage initiation and propagation. Moreover, the discrete wavelet analysis of acoustic emission signals and fast Fourier transform enabled the calculation of the peak frequency content of each damage mechanism. The results showed that the cross-ply laminates had superior indentation damage resistance over angle ply and unidirectional (UD) laminates under normal and oblique planes of cyclic loading. However, the conclusion from the results was that UD laminates showed a better reduction in residual compressive strength than the other laminate configurations.

This paper deals with the damage behavior of glass/epoxy composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact at various temperatures. For this goal, the impact tests were performed by using an instrumented impact-testing machine at three temperatures: +20°C, -10°C and -40°C. And the resultant damages were inspected through the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). Also, based on the impact force history and the damage configuration of the laminates, the impact resistance parameters were employed to evaluate damage resistance of glass/epoxy laminates. As results, it was found that the temperature changes affect the damage resistance capacity of glass/epoxy laminates.

Aircrafts, bridges, wind turbines and other civil structures made of composite materials are frequently subjected to vibrations, which are responsible for a considerable number of accidents. One of the methods to reduce the vibrations is the incorporation of nanofibers in the composite structures. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the inclusion of polycaprolactone nanofibers on the vibratory behaviour of composite laminates. For this purpose, the vibratory behaviour of nano composites (with nanofibers) and standard composites (without nanofibers) is investigated with the purpose of acquiring their natural frequencies and the damping ratio. The results indicated that the inclusion of polycaprolactone nanofibers in composites increased the damping ratio, however it did not change significantly the natural frequencies. Furthermore, the paper investigates the effect of polycaprolactone nanofibers on the damage resistance of glass fibre composites. For this purpose, a finite element model is used to simulate the damage caused by mechanical impact in standard and nano composites. The numerical simulations show that the interleaving with nanofibers increased the damage resistance considerably. This study contributes to the knowledge about the vibration behaviour and the damage resistance of composites interleaved with polycaprolactone nanofibers. It is demonstrated that the interleaving with polycaprolactone fibres can play an important role for reducing the vibrations and increasing their impact damage resistance in composite structures as aircrafts.

One of the problems with composites is their weak impact damage resistance and post-impact mechanical properties. Composites are prone to delamination damage when impacted by low-speed projectiles because of the weak through-thickness strength. To combat the problem of delamination damage, composite parts are often over-designed with extra layers. However, this increases the cost, weight, and volume of the composite and, in some cases, may only provide moderate improvements to impact damage resistance. The selection of the optimal parameters for composite plates that give high impact resistance under low-velocity impact loads should consider several factors related to the properties of the materials as well as to how the composite product is manufactured. To obtain the desired impact resistance, it is essential to know the interrelationships between these parameters and the energy absorbed by the composite. Knowing which parameters affect the improvement of the composite impact resistance and which parameters give the most significant effect are the main issues in the composite industry. In this work, the impact response of composite laminates with various stacking sequences and resins was studied with the Instron 9250G drop-tower to determine the energy absorption. Three types of composites were used: carbon-fiber, glass-fiber, and mixed-fiber composite laminates. Also, these composites were characterized by different stacking sequences and resin types. The effect of several composite structural parameters on the absorbed energy of composite plates is studied. A finite element model was then used to find an optimized design with improved impact resistance based on the best attributes found from the experimental testing.
