Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often develop nutritional disorders, their incidence reaches 80% (according to the literature data).Purpose. To analyze the frequency of nutritional disorders and features of nutritional status in children with CP.Characteristics of children and research methods. We studied the anthropometric indicators (weight, height, body mass index, triceps and subscapular skin fold thickness), physical development characteristics depending on the motor abilities of the child according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System scale and body composition by bioelectrical impedance.Results. Nutritional status disorders were detected in 88.8% of patients, while the diagnostic was based on a reduced physical development in 55.5% of patients. 22.2% of patients had protein-energy deficiency of the first degree, 15.5% of patients had protein-energy deficiency of the second degree, 6.7% of patients had protein-energy deficiency of the third degree, 11.1% of patients suffered from overweight. Besides, nutritional disorders were diagnosed in 33.3% of patients with normal physical development, but with altered body composition, namely, with the imbalance of fat and lean body weight, the isolated increase of the percentage of fat mass, the decrease of active cellular and musculoskeletal weight. These patients also require nutritional correction.Conclusion. These data confirm the dependence of physical development and body composition on the patient’s motor activity and demonstrate the need for complex comprehensive study of nutritional status in children with CP.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the relationship between serum leptin concentrations and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in a large study group of elderly individuals with special consideration of body composition and body fat distribution as possible confounders. DESIGN AND METHODS: The subjects were 122 women (age: 69+/-6 years, body mass index (BMI): 26.3+/-3.6 kg/m(2)) and 82 men (age: 69+/-5 years, BMI: 26.0+/-2.6 kg/m(2)). RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry and body composition by the bioelectrical impedance method. Serum leptin levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: There was a strong correlation between fat mass (FM) and serum leptin levels in both sexes. An age-related decline in leptin levels adjusted for FM was observed only in the women. After adjustment of RMR for both fat-free mass (FFM) and FM, leptin levels were not associated with RMR. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, FFM was the main predictor of RMR, explaining 35.8% and 47.6% of the variance of RMR in men and women respectively. FM did not explain variance in RMR in men, but accounted for 2.6% of the variance in RMR in women. Waist-hip-ratio and age influenced RMR only in males, explaining 5.7% and 4.0% of the variance in RMR respectively. CONCLUSION: Leptin is not a significant predictor of RMR in the elderly, but body composition and distribution of body fat are significantly associated with RMR.

Physical activity is one of the important factors for maintaining weight in adults and children, especially moderate-to- vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, few studies have discussed about physical activity and body composition of aboriginal children, in spite of the differences existing between aboriginal and non-aboriginal children. As a result, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of physical activity on the body composition and basal metabolic rate (BMR) of Taiwanese aboriginal children. Methods: Thirty boys (aged 10.7 ± 1.5 yr with a body-mass index (BMI) of 19.0 ± 4.2 kg/m2) and 26 girls (aged 10.0 ± 1.5 yr with a BMI of 18.2 ± 3.7 kg/m2) participated in this study. Bouchard's physical activity questionnaire was used to measure the physical activity level. The body composition and BMR were determined by a bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: For all subjects, the period of school time, from leaving home to arriving back home, was totally 530 ± 38minutes. Children engaged in 353.8 ± 29.7 (66%), 121.9 ± 9.7 (23%), 37.1 ± 7.5 (7%), and 21.4 ± 7.0 (4%) minutes of sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous levels of exercise, respectively. The accumulated time of MVPA was significantly higher for boys than for girls. In addition, after the statistical analysis, MVPA was significantly related to the percent body fat and BMR (-0.79 and 0.63; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Sufficient physical activity time, especially MVPA, benefits the maintenance of a normal BMI range for aboriginal children. 身體活動對維持成人與孩童的體重相當重要,特別是中度與激烈程度的身體活動。儘管原住民與非原住民孩童存在著差異,但原住民兒童身體活動與身體組成的關係卻很少被討論。因此,本研究目的探討身體活動對原住民兒童身體組成與基礎代謝率的影響。30位原住民男學童(年齡:10.7 ± 1.5歲,身體質量指數:19.0 ± 4.2 kg/m2)與26位原住民女學童(年齡: 10.0 ± 1.5歲,身體質量指數:18.2 ± 3.7 kg/m2)參與本研究。Bouchard身體活動問卷調查原住民學童不同程度的身體活動,並以生物電阻法原理測量身體組成與基礎代謝率。結果:在校時間,從離家至返家,總計為530 ± 38分鐘。在坐式、輕度、中度、激烈等不同程度的身體活動時間 > 分別為353.8 ± 29.7 (66%)、121.9 ± 9.7 (23%)、37.1 ± 7.5 (7%)、21.4 ± 7.0 (4%)分鐘。男原住民學童在學校累積的中度-激烈的身體活動時間顯著多於女原住民學童。再者,中度-激烈的身體活動時間與原住民學童的體脂肪百分比、基礎代謝率有顯著相關(079、0.63; p < 0.05)。結論:足夠的身體活動時間,特別是中度-激烈程度的身體活動,將有助於原住民學童維持身體質量指數在正常範圍。

Abstract The object of the study was to analyze the relationship between aerobic fitness and body composition in postmenopausal women. We hypothesized that postmenopausal women that had higher adiposity had lower cardiorespiratory capacity, regardless of the characteristics of menopause. The sample included 208 women (57.57 ± 6.62 years), whose body composition and the basal metabolic rate were evaluated by octopolar bioimpedance (InBody 720) and the oxygen uptake by the modified Bruce protocol. Most of the sample showed obesity and a high visceral fat area. The visceral fat area and the basal metabolic rate explained 30% of the variation of oxygen uptake, regardless of age, time, nature or hormone therapy. The values of the latter variables were reduced in the presence of high central adiposity (-6.16 ml/kg/min) and the basal metabolic rate of less than 1238 kcal/day (-0.18 ml/kg/min). The women with oxygen uptake above 30.94 ml/kg/min showed lower values of total and central adiposity when compared with other groups. With an increase of aerobic fitness, there was a growing tendency of the average values of the soft lean mass index, with differences between the groups low-high and moderate-high. These results suggest worsening of the cardiorespiratory condition with an increase of central adiposity and a decrease of the BMR, regardless of age and menopause characteristics.
