Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) blends were prepared by dynamic vulcanization where chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) was used as a compatibilizer. The effects of CPE on mechanical properties, Mullins effect, dynamic mechanical properties, and morphology of the blends were investigated systematically. Experimental results indicated that CPE had an excellent compatibilization on the HDPE/NBR blends. Dynamic mechanical analysis studies showed that the glass transition temperature of NBR phase was slightly shifted toward higher temperature with the CPE incorporation, leading to the increasing interface compatibility. Mullins effect results showed that the compatibilized HDPE/NBR blend had relatively lower residual deformation and internal friction than that of HDPE/NBR blend, indicating the improvement of elasticity. Morphology studies showed that the size of the NBR particles was decreased with the existence of CPE; moreover, the fracture surface of HDPE/CPE/NBR TPV was relatively smoother than that of HDPE/NBR blend.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on ethylene-methacrylic acid (EMA) copolymer/nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) blends were prepared by dynamic vulcanization where the NBR phase was reinforced by zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA). The effect of ZDMA dosage on the mechanical properties, Mullins effect, and morphology of the TPVs was investigated systematically. Experimental results indicated that the mechanical properties of EMA/NBR TPVs were enhanced remarkably with the incorporation of ZDMA. Morphology study showed that the NBR particles with diameters of about 1–5 μm were dispersed evenly in the etched surface of EMA/NBR/ZDMA TPV. The Mullins effect could be observed in the stress–strain curves of EMA/NBR TPV and EMA/NBR/ZDMA TPV during the uniaxial loading–unloading cycles. Compared with those of EMA/NBR TPV, EMA/NBR/ZDMA TPV had the higher stress, residual deformation, and internal friction loss.

The results of study of the influence of hollow corundum microspheres HCM-S (5–100 µm) and HCM-L (70–180 µm) on the properties of nitrile butadiene rubber BNKS-18 are presented. The dependence of elastomer resistance to abrasion impact and physic and mechanical properties on the dispersion and concentration of hollow corundum microspheres is shown. The process of hollow corundum microspheres exfoliation of the elastomeric matrix, which largely determines the change of physic and mechanical properties, has been studied by specially developed stretching device compatible with an atomic force microscope. The paper describes microspheres exfoliation which is conventionally divided into 3 stages.
