The accurate model of the load state for all balls under multidirectional load is very helpful for the design process of ball screws. The contact deformation model of the ball screw without consideration of the stress difference of all balls is inaccurate. In this paper, a novel contact load model of the ball screw is established by considering coupled axial, radial load to study the elastic deformation displacement and position accuracy. The deviation and variation of axial elastic deformation with the dimension errors of all balls are investigated to obtain the influence of load state on the precision sustainability of the ball screw. The position precision including travel deviation and variation by considering load distribution of all balls is studied under the different load conditions. In addition, a new working bench is designed to study the position precision of the ball screw. The experimental study is carried out to obtain the relationship between the position precision and the contact load state of all balls, which is a reference to compensate for the precision loss of the ball screw.

Cellulose hydrolysis has many industrial applications such as biofuel production, food, paper and textile manufacture. Here, we present a novel approach to cellulose hydrolysis using a consortium of motile bacteria, Paenibacillus vortex, that can swarm on solid medium carrying a non-motile recombinant E. coli cargo strain expressing the β-glucosidase and cellulase genes that facilitate the hydrolysis of cellulose. These two species cooperate; the relationship is mutually beneficial: the E. coli is dispersed over long distances, while the P. vortex bacteria gain from the supply of cellulose degradation products. This enables the use of such consortia in this area of biotechnology.

The paper presents classical and non-classical rheological schemes used to formulate constitutive models of the one-dimensional consolidation problem. The authors paid special attention to the secondary consolidation effects in organic soils as well as the soil over-consolidation phenomenon. The systems of partial differential equations were formulated for every model and solved numerically to obtain settlement curves. Selected numerical results were compared with standard oedometer laboratory test data carried out by the authors on organic soil samples. Additionally, plasticity phenomenon and non-classical rheological elements were included in order to take into account soil over-consolidation behaviour in the one-dimensional settlement model. A new way of formulating constitutive equations for the soil skeleton and predicting the relationship between the effective stress and strain or void ratio was presented. Rheological structures provide a flexible tool for creating complex constitutive relationships of soil.

Ball screw is a mechanical device widely used in mechanical field. The reverse clearance of ball screw will reduce its precision. In order to eliminate the reverse clearance, it is necessary to apply preload to the ball screw. It is very difficult to measure the preload in real time, and the data are large and time-consuming. By using machine learning method to predict and supervise preload, the changing trend of working condition of ball screw can be evaluated in advance, and the working precision of screw is controlled, which has important engineering significance. In this article, the relationship between the preload and the friction torque is obtained through theoretical derivation and experimental verification. Then, the support vector machine is used as a tool to model the friction torque of ball screw with the parameters of material, lubrication, and revolution, and predict the value and trend of preload to complete the supervision and prediction of the preload of the ball screw. By comparing the experimental results, it is proved that the support vector machine is feasible in predicting and supervising the attenuation of the preload of ball screw.

AbstractThe measurement of the proliferation (and the relevant inhibition of proliferation) of microbes is used in different settings, from industry to laboratory medicine. Thus, in this study, the capacity of the Antibiochip (ELTEK spa), a microfluidic-based device, to measure the amount of E. coli in certain culture conditions, was evaluated. An Antibiochip is composed of V-shaped microchannels, and the amount of microparticles (such as microbes) is measured by the surface of the pellet after centrifugation. In the present study, different geometries, volumes and times were analyzed. When the best conditions were identified, serial dilutions of microbial cultures were tested to validate the linearity of the results. Then, with the use of wild E. coli strains isolated from medical samples, the relationship between bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics (gentamicin, amikacin and ceftriaxone) measured by standard methods and that measured by the Antibiochip was evaluated. In this report, the good quality performances of the methods, their linearity and the capacity to identify susceptible microbial strains after 60 minutes of incubation are shown. These results represent a novel approach for ultrarapid antibiograms in clinics.

Abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the macroscopic parameters, such as the Young's modulus in the Hooke's law, the sound speed and the Debye characteristic temperature, with the binding energy of an individual atom. A formula for calculating the elastic deformation modulus is proposed. A simple formula is obtained to calculate the sound speed in a metal rod. It is suggested that the Debay characteristic temperature is connected with the binding energy of the ion in the solid lattice.

Considering the relationship of displacement and turn angle in anchorages and deviators between the externally prestressed steel and concrete beam under the action of load in simply supported externally prestrressed beam, equations on solving the incremental force in externally prestressed steel are established. The presented novel approach and the train of thought can be easily extended to analyze time-dependent effect for externally prestressed beams. The example shows that the theoretical values based on the presented formulae are agreeable with the results obtained by other methods.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between intellectual capital and firm capital structure by exploring whether firm profitability and risk are drivers of this relationship.Design/methodology/approachBased on a comprehensive data set of Italian firms over the 2008–2017 period, this paper examines whether intellectual capital affects firm financial leverage. Moreover, it analyzes whether firm profitability and risk mediate the abovementioned relationship. Financial leverage is measured by the debt/equity ratio. Intellectual capital is measured via the value-added intellectual coefficient approach.FindingsThe findings show that firms with a high level of intellectual capital have lower financial leverage and are more profitable and riskier than firms with a low level of intellectual capital. Furthermore, this study finds that firm profitability and risk mediate the relationship between intellectual capital and financial leverage. Thus, the higher profitability and risk of intellectual capital-intensive firms help explain their lower financial leverage.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings have several implications. From a theoretical standpoint, the paper presents and tests a mediating model of the relationship between intellectual capital and financial leverage and its underlying processes. In terms of the more general managerial implications, the results provide managers with a clear interpretation of the relationship between intellectual capital and financial leverage and point to the need to strengthen the capital structure of intangible-intensive firms.Originality/valueThrough a mediation framework, this study provides empirical evidence on the relationship between intellectual capital and firm financial leverage by exploring the underlying mechanisms behind that relationship, which is a novel approach in the literature.

Abstract This paper presents a novel approach to analyze the sentiment of the product comments from sentence to document level and apply to the customers sentiment analysis on UAV-aided product comments for hotel management. In order to realize the effiffifficient sentiment analysis, a cascaded sentence-to-document sentiment classifification method is investigated. Initially, a supervised machine learning method is applied to explore the sentiment polarity of the sentence (SPS). Afterward, the contribution of the sentence to document (CSD) is calculated by using various statistical algorithms. Lastly, the sentiment polarity of the document (SPD) is determined by the SPS as well as its contribution. Comparative experiments have been established on the basis of hotel online comments, and the outcomes indicate that the proposed method not only raises the effiffifficiency in attaining a more accurate result but also assists immensely in regards to the B5G wireless communication supported by the UAV. The fifindings provide a new perspective that sentence position and its sentiment similarity with document (sentiment condition) dramatically disclose the relationship between sentence and document.
