The paper presents classical and non-classical rheological schemes used to formulate constitutive models of the one-dimensional consolidation problem. The authors paid special attention to the secondary consolidation effects in organic soils as well as the soil over-consolidation phenomenon. The systems of partial differential equations were formulated for every model and solved numerically to obtain settlement curves. Selected numerical results were compared with standard oedometer laboratory test data carried out by the authors on organic soil samples. Additionally, plasticity phenomenon and non-classical rheological elements were included in order to take into account soil over-consolidation behaviour in the one-dimensional settlement model. A new way of formulating constitutive equations for the soil skeleton and predicting the relationship between the effective stress and strain or void ratio was presented. Rheological structures provide a flexible tool for creating complex constitutive relationships of soil.

The contact mechanics model of the metal lens-type sealing gasket is established on the basis of Hertz theory on the macroscopical scale in this paper. The relationship among sealing width, contact pressure, and preload is solved. Based on the structural characteristics of the subsea collet connector, the self-locking characteristics are analyzed to determine the gain coefficient of the sealing structure for the loading thrust. On the microscopic scale, the contact characteristics of the turning lens-type sealing gasket and the hub structure are analyzed by the equivalent replacement of the peak cut coefficient of the one-dimensional sinusoidal wave. The influence of different leakage forms on sealing performance is discussed from both radial and circumferential leakage, and the leakage rate of the lens-type sealing structure is calculated. The hydrostatic pressure experiment of the subsea collet connector with lens-type sealing gasket is carried out, and the correctness of the theoretical analysis is verified from the results of the pressure maintaining, sealing width measurement, and preload conversion.

In this study, a vacuum and surcharge combined one-dimensional consolidation model is developed. Terzaghi's consolidation theory is revisited by applying the initial and boundary conditions corresponding to combined vacuum and surcharge loading on a soil. A test apparatus is designed, manufactured, and assembled to verify the model. The apparatus has the capacity of applying designated vacuum and surcharge pressures to a soil specimen, and it allows for the measurement of the excess pore-water pressure, settlement, and volume change during the consolidation process. Two series of tests are performed using the apparatus on two reconstituted natural clay soils, namely, the Welland sediment at water contents close to its liquid limit and the Orleans clay, reconstituted and consolidated under an effective stress of 60 kPa. The former test series mimics the strengthening of a very soft soil, such as the hydraulic fill used in land reclamation. The latter test series is designed to study vacuum–surcharge combined strengthening of a consolidated soil. It is demonstrated from the experiments that the one-dimensional vacuum-surcharge consolidation model describes the consolidation behaviour of both soils well. The consolidation characteristics of the soils show no discrimination against the nature of the consolidation pressure, namely, whether they are consolidated under the vacuum pressure alone, under the surcharge pressure alone, or under a pressure generated by the combined application of vacuum and surcharge. The study concluded that the soil consolidation characteristics obtained from the conventional consolidation tests can be used in the design of vacuum preloading systems, provided that the one-dimensional loading condition prevails.Key words: consolidation, soil improvement, vacuum pressure, surcharge pressure, excess pore-water pressure, soil consolidation parameters.

The article presents the results of a study of the relationship between irregularity in linear density and the proportion of components of one-dimensional fibrous products (tape, tourniquet, roving, yarn). A formula is obtained for estimating the coefficient of variation for the component fraction depending on the unevenness for the linear density and the average component fraction. The estimate allows one to predict the expected unevenness of the component share in the product based on known information about the unevenness of the components. Regularities are established and examples are given of the relationship between correlation functions and spectral dispersion densities for unevenness by linear density and component share in the product depending on the share of components, their unevenness, and the spectral composition of the unevenness.

The regional magneto-variational sounding method (aka Z/H method) was used for estimation of the Earth's mantle conductivity model at the Panagurishte (PAG) observatory region. A magneto-variational transfer function is calculated on the base of the relationship of vertical to horizontal geomagnetic field spectra components recorded on the Earth surface and priori assumptions about a field source structure. Inversions of the transfer function allow to obtain the one dimensional conductivity model.

The one-dimensional problem of elastic filtration of fluid through moving boundary is considered. The boundary conditions for invariant problem is introduced. The problem is reduced to overdetermine boundary problem for Veber equation. The exact solutions are obtained. For arbitrary invariant filtration law the relationship between overdetermine invariant boundary conditions is obtained.

Using data obtained from Spanish surveys on the public perception of science, this article presents a critical review of current practices of population profile segmentation, including the one-dimensional representation of perceived risks and benefits and of the systematic underestimation of critical attitudes to the social impact of science and technology. We use discriminant analysis to detect a somewhat hidden cluster in the Spanish population which we call ‘critical engagers’. These individuals are critically and socially responsible and are not reticent about expressing concern regarding scientific-technological change. While they hold an overall positive attitude towards change of this kind, they are at the same time well aware of the risks posed by particular fields of application. We highlight the academic interest and political value of these individuals, attributing to this population a mature and intelligent stance which may well be employed in enhancing the relationship between science and society.

AbstractThe inner representation of deep neural networks (DNNs) is indecipherable, which makes it difficult to tune DNN models, control their training process, and interpret their outputs. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to investigate the inner representation of DNNs through topological data analysis (TDA). Persistent homology (PH), one of the outstanding methods in TDA, was employed for investigating the complexities of trained DNNs. We constructed clique complexes on trained DNNs and calculated the one-dimensional PH of DNNs. The PH reveals the combinational effects of multiple neurons in DNNs at different resolutions, which is difficult to be captured without using PH. Evaluations were conducted using fully connected networks (FCNs) and networks combining FCNs and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained on the MNIST and CIFAR-10 data sets. Evaluation results demonstrate that the PH of DNNs reflects both the excess of neurons and problem difficulty, making PH one of the prominent methods for investigating the inner representation of DNNs.

We describe the relationship between quantum Hall edge states and the one-dimensional Luttinger liquid model. The Luttinger liquid model originated from studies of one-dimensional Fermi systems, however, it results that many ideas inspired by such a model can find applications to phenomena occurring even in higher dimensions. Quantum Hall systems which essentially are correlated two-dimensional electronic systems in a strong perpendicular magnetic field have an edge. It turns out that the quantum Hall edge states can be described by a one-dimensional Luttinger model. In this work, we give a general background of the quantum Hall and Luttinger liquid physics and then point out the relationship between the quantum Hall edge states and its one-dimensional Luttinger liquid representation. Such a description is very useful given that the Luttinger liquid model has the property that it can be bosonized and solved. The fact that we can introduce a simpler model of noninteracting bosons, even if the quantum Hall edge states of electrons are interacting, allows one to calculate exactly various quantities of interest. One such quantity is the correlation function which, in the asymptotic limit, is predicted to have a power law form. The Luttinger liquid model also suggests that such a power law exponent should have a universal value. A large number of experiments have found the quantum Hall edge states to show behavior consistent with a Luttinger liquid description. However, while a power law dependence of the correlation function has been observed, the experimental values of the exponent appear not to be universal. This discrepancy might be due to various correlation effects between electrons that sometimes are not easy to incorporate within a standard Luttinger liquid model.
